Movie reviews oh movie reviews.
We are just cranking through the 70’s films. Today we add 7 more to the vault for your listening pleasure.
Let’s review our reviews. Today’s offering begin’s with (Kelly’s Heroes 1970)
I love Donald Sutherland very much but this darn accent. Get ready for Kojack and explosions.
Next is (Kotch 1971) where Walter Matthau puts on the old man make up and rambles. This is 3 whole years before Art Carney does it in Harry and Tonto. Kotch needs more cats.
Walter is back again with (Pete and Tillie 1972) and he brought the rad Carol Burnett annnnnd she deserves better than Pete.
We’re on fire now, Cookin through these films and onto (Flame1975) starring the glam pioneers Slade. I’ve still got that swinging monkeys song in my head.
Next is (The lost honor of Katharine la Blum 1975)
This the second Margarethe von Trotta film we’re reviewing, though technically it came out first. It doesn’t matter just watch it.
Hey, wasn’t I just asking for more cats, well here they are in (The uncanny 1977). There’s cats and the guy that holds Vader’s leash, though really that’s always seemed odd to me considering the fact the that Vaders got the dark side and Tarkins got nothin, but I digress.
Finally today we discuss our final Margarethe von Trotta film of the 70’s with
(Sisters,or the balance of happiness 1979) This ones rather arty n German. But do we love it? Please listen and see. Thanks friends.

Hi film friends. Today your decade under the influence crew takes on the entire ruling class, with our long knives drawn. Actually we just take on the movie (The ruling class 1972) which takes on the class system in English specifically and the world in general.
A mighty task indeed. Peter O’toole and Director Peter Medak in preparation for this epic went to Ireland for a couple of weeks, they’d wake up cook breakfast discuss and act out the script all day, and then head to the pub and sing.
Sounds more than about right.
Film was written by Peter Barnes, and also stars Alastair Sim, Arthur Lowe, Coral Browne, and James Villiers. We do hope you enjoy our deep dive into the Ruling Class, also O’toole has bad hair here, I’m sorry but I said it. Please let us know what you think. You could gives us all the stars too,
why not?

Six more 70’s movie reviews for you, and they are more disconnected than usual. It doesn’t matter but usually our movie reviews have at least a lil thread that combines at least some of them, consciously or unconsciously. I guess 2 of these do, gawd. Anyway let’s start.
First up is (Cotton comes to Harlem 1970), an early blaxploitation film that is as weird as the term blaxploitation. We are ongoing in our efforts to unpack the term Blaxploitation, but we try to unpack this movie here today as best we can. Next up (The Great white hope 1970).
Here we have Darth Vader and Jane Alexander telling the true story of boxer Jack Johnson. Enter racism.
Movin along we have Gravedigger and Coffin back in (Come back Charleston blue 1972) I guess it’s a sequel? Next is (Burnt offerings 1976). Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Rocky’s coach, and the mighty mom from Butterflies are free, are coming and going from a house stuck in the twilight zone.
Almost done, and here’s (Sea gypsies 1978- AKA Shipwrecked) A hippie takes his two kids, a reporter, and a stowaway on a sailing trip around the world. I bet it’s gonna go great.
Ending things today we begin our journey through the 3 70’s film of German Director Margarethe Von Trotta. We oddly go 2/1/3 soooooo here’s (The second awakening of Christina Klages 1978), and I can at least say here that the films premise is a ten outta ten for me.
Thanks for listening folks. Please give us all the stars and write us a nice review about how you are glad there’s three 70’s movies scientists out there plugging away, and doin their best to make sense out the giant acid trip that was most 70’s movies.

Hi film friends, today we gots seven new reviews for you starting off with (Emperor of the north 1973) where 2 train hoppers are brutally hunted by the cab driver from escape from New York. Next up is (A warm December 1973) Here we have Sidney Portier once again showing racist asshats that people of color are capable of anything they are. (Your three minutes are up 1973) is up, and this hard to find film has the supercops guy Ron Leibman and Beau Bridges goin on a road trip to doucheness. Next we have (Danny 1977) Where Roger from Dawn of the dead appears for like a second and the rest is an uplifting kids film about horses, though actually it’s darker and more about classism. Onward to the classic (Blue collar 1978) where god damn Yaphet Kotto gets the rawest deal. (The Odd Job 1978) has Brain from Life of Brian hiring a handy man to kill him. Enter Zaniness! Finally today your Decade under the influence crew review (Hardcore 1979) where George C. Scot is a Calvinist gone rogue. He puts on an amazingly ridiculous mustache and tries to find his missing Calvinist. Thank you 🙏

Movie #70 has been up.
I’m slowly catching up on here so, please bear with.

Today we tackle the epic cult masterpiece Dawn of the dead 1978. Much has been podcasted about this one, so of course, here’s over 2 hours more. We are watching and discussing the theatrical cut. Chosen for its 70’s pure-ism, but seriously I would of been happy watching almost any cut of this.
Dive in with us as we ask “what are the doing why do they come here. Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives.”
George Romeo and Christine Forrest film Pittsburg, Tom Savini makes squibs, pumps blood, and is awesome, and hip looking Carl Augenstein pushes all his lights to their most maximum potential.
Thanks for listening, and let’s here from you cinephiles out there. I know it’s a “careful what you wish for.” But I did it.

Hi 70’s movie fans, today we gots 9 reviews for you. Can’t wait to compare notes with you rad cinephiles. I do need to get this done quick. I’ve put it off and I need to go to work. Swigs espresso……… Let’s go!!!! First off we have James Mason in Sidney Lumet’s (Child’s play 1972)
Who would ever think that dark s**t is goin on in a boys boarding school.
Next we get great music and a co***ne slide show in (Super fly 1972).
Next.
Oh look y’all Ron O’Neil and Sheila Frazier are back in, oops, first we review (Detroit 9000 1973) Alex Rocco and rad Vonetta McGee Star in this gritty possibly PR for the police state film.
Ok now it’s (Super fly TNT1973) and Benson from the hit show Benson is in this sequel also Box from Logan’s run. Also also, revolution!
Moving on to (The grass is always greener over the septic tank 1978)
Carol Burnett and Erma Bombeck!
I loved diving into our dvd of this rare made for tv 70’s treat. Coach is here in this as well. Moving onto (Bear island 1979).
Based on a popular novel of that year. Here we have many great actors dealing with the pressures of ecology, explosions, snow, and n**i’s.
Ok next is the recently lost great actor James Caan, teaming again with Marsha Mason in (Chapter 2 1979) Rhoda is here too, so what can go wrong.
Almost done, and, oh look I finally scored a copy of (Dreamer 1979). Here is a bowling movie that is really got a lot of bowling in it. The cover of this movie has Jack Warden drawn as a man living out his days happily inside of a bowling pin.
Poster made me smile so much I had to buy it. Dreamer is actually the main characters name. He is fiercely dedicated to being great at bowling, and is played by the guy from the Body Wars ride at EPCOT.
Finally chums today we end our reviews today with another Carol Burnett made for TV movie called (The 10th month 1979) She’s very serious in this one. Both of these tv movies are written by women and really get on film some outdated medieval treatment of women, the exposure and eradication of which were long overdue. Still long to go but after watching both of these I gotta say that the great Carol got even greater.
It’s a different day now but the coffee’s finished and so am I. Thanks for listening, please spread the word.
If you need any help acquiring any of these films, drop us a line and we’ll help you out.

Don’t know who’s idea this was (it was mine) but today we review most of the disco movies out there, the Linda Blair one is coming as we couldn’t get a decent copy in time.
First your fearless crew takes on (That’s the way of the world 1975) a great Earth Wind and Fire movie that needs more Earth Wind and Fire, and more roller disco. Next up is (Saturday night fever 1977) Needed more of the Nanny and way less s*xual assault. Omg, we’ll always have the soundtrack, listen, don’t watch. Onwards to (Disco fever AKA Jukebox 1978) With Casey Kasem and Fabian you can’t lose, right?
Moving along with (Thank god it’s Friday 1978) With Terri Nunn and Jeff Goldblum you can’t lose, for real this time!
Next we ease on down the road with (The Wiz 1978) a great film that suffered because too many rad people of color were on the soundstage at once. Enter Racism.
Next up we review a coked up Horshack and the greatest dance instructor ever in (Skatetown U.S.A. 1979) and I’m having the time of my life.
Finally 70’s movie fans, here’s one from 1980 (Can’t stop the music) which is technically true as I’ve had the song Magic Night stuck in my head for decades. But is it true that Leathermen don’t cry?
Ok we out, thanks so much for listening

Full crew today, hmmmm
I do believe we need a bigger boat. Eddie joins us again to tackle (Jaws 1975)
Hard to focus right now cause Portland street keyboard wizard Buddy B is a wailin right next to me. No one to blame but myself, as I chose to sit here. It’s ok cause really what is there to say save that this is one of those 70’s movies that changed it all.
Would you like to hear 4 people discuss Jaws and probably many random things for over 2 hours, we’ll then it’s good you stopped by this 70’s movie podcast.
I’m glad I was there, I have a new fierce admiration for Bob Mattey retired effects master, who when approached by the filmmakers after they had been told by everyone else that it can’t be done said “Hogwash, we can do anything.”
Thanks for listening, I am leaving the keyboard zone.

All rise friends, because today your fearless decade under the influence crew will sit in judgment of
(And Justice for all 1979)
Al Pacino stars, Norman Jewison directs, and Vera from Alice doesn’t live here anymore AKA Valarie Curtain writes this epic madness that is a lil hard to explain in words. Listen to us watch and dissect this epic Dark comedy, that might help explain. Calling it a dark comedy doesn’t feel right at all, maybe a comedic drama, who knows, but I’m here for it.
As always thanks for listening, and please tell your friends.

Movie review number 24 # is here. It’s a late 70’s dive for sure, though not on purpose.
I think I wanna get through this quick cause this reviewer is gettin hungry, plus I’ve had a lot of black coffee soooooo let er rip. First we have a French film from rad director Agnes Varda called (One sings the other doesn’t 1977) fairly decent description, please listen for much more. Next we have (Bobby Deerfield 1977) Well thought of as Al’s weakest 70’s film. Click start to see what we think, also with Pacino damn the bar is high.
Flying forward we gots (Fedora 1978) here William Holden has some free time to travel and…….. solve a mystery. Next up is the mighty (F.I.S.T. 1978) Where V ruins our 4 year streak of not mentioning the dreaded Red Hot Chili Peppers! Opinions about the dreaded RHC peppers may not reflect those the whole crew. Also the rad Mom from a Christmas story is here in this movie about Not Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters.
Onward film soldiers to (Fast Company 1979) this one has cars n beer and Saxon, you’ll love it.
Finally we end with ( Return of the Seacaucus 7 1979) where director John Sayles, follows some yuppie hopefuls around with a camera. Maybe they’re cooler than that, I’ll have to listen along with you.
But wait, special bonus review of (the Fabulous Allan Carr 2017) how does it fit in? It’s time to find out. As always thanks for listening, and we hope you enjoy the offering.

Today we tackle 1978’s mighty (Grease).
Tackle? Well maybe we just letter in track.
I realized just now that this movie is like Lemmy to me. It’s got some big warts but it flippin rules! Yes I can love showtunes and Motörhead.
This film did bring back fabulous musicals and in a time where I feel it was needed. Producer Allan Carr made sure that we were all fed off of its pizazz. Lots of coded stuff here and magic to help those who could use it to survive in a cruel and harsh world. Special place in this crew persons heart because me, some of my sisters, and my closeted Dad would sing and literally learn all the routines to these songs, and mom could catch a break fer a minute. Great creative family fun time. Some great memories amongst some ruff ones living in a small oppressive Catholic town.
Join us won’t you as we all go get a hickey from Kenickie. As always thanks for listening, and please tell us your Grease thoughts and stories.

Movie 66 is up. WIZARDS!
Guest Nephew Julian is here on the pod today. He is representing an even younger generation of peeps discovering 70’s films. He picked today's film which is
(Wizards 1976).
This is our first animation film that we’re showcasing and our first Ralph Bakshi film.
Lots of evil sw****ka loving magic users in this ?????kids film.
Will the good magic users win and defeat fascism?
Wow we just reviewed a film that Susanna Hoffs of the bangles worked on, well here we have Toni Basil (oh Mickey) doing choreography. Interesting stuff this film diving. Anyway this film is awesome and I had a lovely time talking with Julian and the crew all about it. Great film to watch during a DND break. Animator Brenda banks is here in this as well as a mystical cameo by the one and only Luke Skywalker.
Thanks so much fer listening and please, tell your friends.

Starting off today professor McGonagall and Chappy from iron eagle star in (Travels with my Aunt 1972.) This is directed by the mighty George Cukor, and I don’t really know what to say about this except that it belongs on any classic 70’s movie shelf. Let’s just say that a dull branch manager finds out that his Aunt is super rad, and that of course Maggie Smith rules.
Next up Glenda Jackson and Susannah York role play as a defense mechanism to deal with their oppressive employer in (Maids 1975) Whoa Sussannah was the lead in Images 1972 with Odo from DS9, probably should of mentioned that in the pod, oh well, we try. Moving on we have (The naked civil servant.) Here we have the wand maker Ollivander playing rad writer Quentin quisp. Quisp was OUT in the extremely dark times, film is great, see it now, and see us if you can’t get a copy. Also the guy who objects about the size of the exhaust port in Star Wars is in this as well as Gimli the Dwarf.
Next is (The mighty Bluebird 1976.) Here we have Cukor directing again, but it’s rather weird, we try to figure it out but I don’t know if we do. We ain’t classic movie historians (bless them) but we do our best. This adaptation of a French fairy tale has Jane Fonda, Cicely Tyson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Bobby Brady’s brother. It should be way better than it is. It is very trippy.
Onto The (7 percent solution 1976) guess this one’s a bit forgettable since I forgot I’d seen it. Some weird stuff here where Sherlock and frued team up to fight crime and do drugs. Robert Duvall, Alan Arkin and an under used Vanessa Redgrave are here in this. Tell us what you think?
Finally today we review Sydney Pollack’s
(The electric horseman 1979) I remember being intrigued as kid by the electric part, in a hungry for sci fi, just post Star Wars world, but the electric part is more than a bit of a letdown. Adult me has a different take on this Redford and Fonda looking great in tight jeans gem.
Want to know more, just press play.

There hasn’t been enough snow here in Portland for us to do it right, I just hope that didn’t effect our review.

Today we showcase (Jeremiah Johnson 1972). This was based off of Vardis Fishers novel Mountain men, which was based off the story Crow Killer by Raymond Thorp and Robert Bunker, with a screenplay by John Milius. Johnson was real, many of the people in this film were real, but who knows what was legend and what it was really like. This is one group of peoples cinematic interpretation. A lot of hard and creative was put into this by Director Sydney Pollack and crew, to make this look as rad as it does. I find myself drawn to many elements of it, and feel that this film has touched me in some ways that have helped me grow as an empathetic person. It makes me think though cause the more you go back in time it seems the more that people were just horrible to each other. Saying all of this unnecessary jazz also because a western is an odd choice considering my tastes, but still I heart Johnson, and the planet looks very pretty here. Maybe I wanna do like the Iron Maiden song says, “Head for high ground.” Thanks so much friends for listening, please subscribe and consider writing a review, it helps people find the pod.

Greetings programs
Today we review 1971’s they might be giants.
George c Scott and Joanne Woodward tackle mental health, conformity, medieval social norms, and other punk rock topics, while also making friends and searching for Moriarty on the streets of New York during the garbage strike. Film contains a very dense and amazing selection of character actors working in New York at the time, including Grandpa munster, golden girl Blanche, and Amadeus nemesis Salieri.
And yes this where the band got it’s name ♥️
Have a headphone moment on yer daybed with us your decade under influence crew, as we gab and discuss this classic film.
Why not? Thanks for listening and please smash that subscribe button, consider writing a review, and tell a film fan that we are out there.

Review time again so soon?
Actually this is the right time, we are finally gettin our heads out of butts and doin it right.
Six films today and we ain’t wasting no mo time. Today we start off with (No deposit no return 1976). Don Knotts and the guy whose rad wife broke his electric s*x lamp star with one of the kids from escape from witch mountain, in this not silly enough Disney film that really does not promote street smarts. Cue Don Knotts doin bug eyes. Next we Have James Caan and the first captain Janeway n this western that actually has a 70’s car in it for a second. It also has bad ass Susan Tyrell as a teacher giving the kids arms training. We coulda of used her to teach street smarts in the last film.
(Another man another chance 1977) was quite a pleasant surprise for me, and I like those.
Onward into (Damnation alley 1977) Where Jan Michael Vincent, Rorschach, and a cool van see to it that Paul Winfield, who’s never even met Admiral Kirk, gets killed off way too soon.
(Fire sale 1977) has Alan Arkin in the director’s chair again for this wacky arson thrill ride that I liked better than the other 2 Decade under the influence crewmates. Please see this film under the influence.
Next up we see my parents and friends parents roll their eyes and sigh as lil me once again grabs (Attack of the killer tomatoes 1978) off the video store shelf. Our fearless crew finally take on this low budget spoof and see if it holds up to adult eyes, or will we just roll them.
Lastly we review (St. Jack 1979).
R.I.P. Peter Bogdanovich, who actually appears in this film way more than your usual directors cameo’s. Also we found him to look like an older brother to Rick Moranis. St. jack follows Jack, played amazingly by Ben Gazzara as he walks around Singapore knowing absolutely everyone in town.
Thanks y’all, and if for some reason you like our shows please spread the word. Our people are out there somewhere, please help us find them.

(Godspell 1973)
What can possibly be said about this classic film. This updated interpretation of the holy gospel according to Mathew. This film that documents a time in the early 70’s when some young people quit their jobs, took acid and followed a super hero with a rad fro, who could be a bit preachy and wouldn’t shut the heck up about god. Actually we can say a lot, at least 2 hours worth. We even got a friend Vicki to help us w**d through all things Godspell.
Are you a music theater nerd, or just another kid who grew up in the 70’s with this record, and had nuns with guitars chasing you to soothing tune of day by day? Whether it’s those reasons or some weird third thing, this podcast is for you.
Directed by David Green with screenplay by John Michael Tebelak, and starring music theater nerds, the DJ from the Warriors, and the guy who told Rose he was sorry he hadn’t built her a better Titanic.
As always thanks for listening, and if you like the show or know someone interested in 70’s films, please tell them about us♥️.

Whoa 11 movies today, we normally like to do around six.
Do I remember any of these let’s see, it’s been a bit, and we watch a lot of movies.
Starting off we have a possibly drunk John Houston directing the great Susan Tyrell in
(Fat city 1972). Then it’s on to a bit of a quirky blaxploitation classic (Melinda 1972).Starring Rosiland Cash, Calvin Lockhart, and Jim Kelly, yes Jim Kelly, the guy who bests the violent racist police and then drives away in their squad car from the hit film Enter the Dragon.
Next is 1975’s (Cooley High) starring Freddie boom boom Washington and, oh wait, please excuse me whilst I pour some out for our friends who can’t be here……
(Cornbread Earl n me 1975) is very heavy, and it’s as topical today as it was then. A must see film, also you must see the young Lawrence Fishburne, I mean cowboy Curtis as he tries to make sense of all this madness.
Gawd still 4
7 to go. In (Sybil 1976) Sally field and her therapist with unlimited time (Joanne Woodward) also try to rise above and figure out all the damned madness. Should come with a trigger warning, the topics can get severely heavy, so take warning.
Moving on to (September 30, 1955 1977) where Johnboy from the waltons is sad over the death of James Dean and should be nicer to his goth friend, Dennis Quaid and Amadeus.
Next it’s (American hot wax 1978) where Jay Leno is an ass to Fran Drescher and Tim McIntire plays Alan Freed who is less racist then most and is constantly followed by do w*p groups.
Moving onto
(Sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band 1978).
Just watch it folks. You got Barry Gibb gettin high, Aerosmith gettin higher, and Earth Wind and Fire taking you all the way to the top.
Next up to the plate is 1978’s sci-fi classic (The alpha incident) finally available for us to see and to find out that…….um it’s not good. Don’t leave this room or your head will explode, even that sounds cooler than it is. Would you like to know more……
Our last 2 movies this episode are both Gene Roddenberry made for tv films. (Genesis II 1973) and (Planet earth 1974). Where’s the Questor tapes you ask, well we gave that one the full decade under the influence treatment. You’ll find it under episode 49. These 2 go together anyway. Press play mate and we will tell you all about p**n stache Dylan Hunt and John Saxon Dylan Hunt.

Episode 62 is up

Today we tackle all that is The Boys from Brazil 1978. This one seems to ride a wave from heavy drama to midnight movie. It actually required that we get some help. Comedian, musician and former video store employee with me Eddie Wretch is here to help us navigate this Steve Guttenberg classic. Actually his choice to underestimate the dangers of n**i hunting see to it that he’s barely in this, leaving us with heavy hitters Laurence Olivier, Lillie Palmer, James Mason, and Gregory Peck to take us home. Directed by Franklin J Schaffner, yes the Patton guy.
On behalf of myself and the rest of the decade under the influence crew, we’d like to thank you for choosing this podcast. Feel free to give our lil podcast a review on iTunes, it helps us to find our audience, 70’s film fans unite. ♥️

Hi friends episode #61 is up and ready-
I love Michael Ritchie’s Smile (1975)
This decade under the influence crew person is smiling about our watch and review of this movie Smile.
We are Bruce Dern enthusiasts and he is adorable to me in this one. Also this is one the first movies that drew me into the madness that is 70’s cinema. The film takes on the American beauty pageant. Warts and all. Maybe all warts.
Barbara Feldon, the Sassy butler from the Jeffersons, and Dennis Dugan also Star in this.
This and The bad news bears make a great Michael Ritchie double feature, and are both 70’s classics. As always, thanks for listening.

Episode #59 is up and ready for Halloween.
Today your decade under the influence crew takes on 1978’s classic (Halloween) our third John Carpenter film that we have showcased. Also our this is the only quote unquote slasher movie that we would ever touch. Please see our (women in peril) episode for more info on all that.
Actually most of the reasons that this writer loves this film have nothing to do with horror or gore at all.
Would you like to know more about what we think, simply press play.
Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, the Ramones fanatic from rock n roll high school, and Nancy Kyes from assault on precinct 13, star in this, oh yeah also one the great Santini’s kids are here too among other rad talented people that you’ll hear all about if you’d just press play.
Look for that wisp of smoke from Carpenters cigarette in chapter 6
Oh but that’s only if yer watching the laserdisc. I dunno what chapter it is on the dvd. Look it’s when Annie is by the hedge.
Seriously y’all thanks for listening. Also also for those who may not know, producer here Debra Hill is amazing 👍🎃👍
