A key part in the Mr Collin's Holiday Agency story is played by a copy of Albert Engström's magazine 'Strix'. Engström was a famous cartoonist who launched his own magazine 'Strix' in 1897, which he continued to edit until 1924. This kind of magazine contained stories, cartoons and comics, and was often read in shaving parlours!

Albert Engström was one of the leading Swedish authors and cartoonists during the early 20th century. He is considered one of the pioneers of the modern Swedish comic strip, together with Oskar Andersson. He published his cartoons in magazines like Söndags-Nisse and his own...

What connects Pippi Longstocking with Ikea?

In Mr Collin's Holiday Agency, Frank Heller makes gentle fun of the stereotypes of people from Småland, Sweden. They have a reputation of being....extremely careful with their money. However, if you check out this list of famous Smålanders, you'll find that it has many impressive sons and daughters, from Astrid Lindgren (creator of Pippi) to Ingvar Kamprad (creator of Ikea). In fact it looks like a glorious place to visit and we can well understand Mr Jönsson's wish to retire there!

Yes, much has been said and written about and by Smålanders in this big province – the biggest of all the provinces south of Jämtland and one of the provinces in Sweden with most lakes. Smålanders are known for their tenacity, inventiveness and ingenuity, and they had to be in order to choose t...

Through Three Rooms has been out in the world for a month now and the reviews are great! Bookmunch titled their review 'It's a Fair Old Entertainment' and conclude 'If you have any interest in the development of detective fiction over the last couple of hundred years, then you’ll likely get a kick out of the adventures of Asbjørn Krag (and, indeed, the list of Kabaty Press more generally).' Through Three Rooms has been translated from Norwegian by the award-winning translator Lucy Moffatt. We had a quick chat with her about the process of translating a classical crime novel.

- How do you find translating crime fiction as a genre?

I can’t really generalise too much, as this is only my second crime translation. I can say that the two Elvestad novels I’ve translated were tremendous fun to work on. His detective Asbjørn Krag is not only a shrewd and sharp-eyed old-school detective, but also a keen user of the cutting-edge technology of his day: express trains, telegraphs and telephones all feature. I really enjoy the sense of a world teetering on the threshold of modernity. I’d love to translate a few more Elvestads – and then maybe move onto some modern crime fiction.

- What unique challenges did you come across when translating Sven Elvestad's book from 1914 versus more contemporary books you have translated?

One general challenge is that Elvestad’s language is as close to Danish as it is to modern Norwegian. I could have made my life easier by tracking down a revised edition in modern Norwegian, but I’ve noticed that errors or omissions can sometimes creep in during the revision process, so I opted to translate from the 1914 original, courtesy of the National Library’s splendid digitized collection. Another challenge was trying to capture the style of an age very different from our own. It’s easy to tip over into parody if you’re not careful.
