NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig describes how today's shooting of a cop in Jamaica, Queens, developed.

Question: Might recent restrictions on methods used by police to control a suspect have led to this shooting?

A rookie NYPD cop with just three months on the force was shot in the leg on Wednesday during an altercation in Queens, cops said.

Officer Brett Boller, 22, was struck by gunfire when a suspect opened fire while attempting to evade arrest on 161st St. near Jamacia Avenue at around 3:30 p.m., according to police.

The ruckus began when the suspect was riding on an MTA bus that was flagged down by police for unknown reasons.

Once the bus stopped, the suspect attempted to flee the scene and fired on police, striking Boller.

The officer was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

One person is believed to be in custody but it was not clear if that person was the shooter, sources said. Cops were still searching for two other suspects on Wednesday.

Boller, of the 103rd precinct, was assigned to the Jamacia Business District to help stem the surge in shoplifting, sources said.

An 82-year-old taxi driver was pepper-spray in the face during a Bronx road rage clash, cops said Sunday.

Surveillance video released by the NYPD shows the yellow cab stopped at Lowell St. and Longfellow Ave. in Longwood and the attacker’s gray sedan stopped just behind him at an angle about 6:15 p.m. March 9.

The attacker got out of his sedan on the narrow one-way street and walked to the cab driver’s window, pointing and gesturing at him, the video shows.

After spraying the cabbie in the face with pepper spray, the assailant got back into his sedan and and sped off, cops said. He has not been caught.

Medics treated the cabbie at the scene.

Cops are asking the public’s help identifying the attacker and tracking him down.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Two Brooklyn subway riders pulled a box cutter on a man and hit him in the head after he asked them to stop smoking aboard the train, according to authorities.

The victim, 45, was aboard a southbound A train approaching the Nostrand Avenue stop in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday when he noticed the pair smoking, police said.

When the man asked them to stop, one of the two whipped out a box cutter, officials said. The assailants also hit him in the back of the head with an unknown object, then got off the train and fled, authorities said.

The victim suffered a cut to the head, but declined medical attention, police said.

Investigators released surveillance images of the suspects, as well as a short video showing one of them flashing a peace sign toward the camera. They ask that anyone with information on the suspects’ identities or whereabouts get in touch.

Police have released images of a suspect wanted for allegedly beating a man over the head with a metal pipe outside a bar/restaurant in Jackson Heights last month.

The suspect allegedly pummeled the 38-year-old victim with the pipe in front of El Canelazo, an Ecuadorian bar/restaurant located at 80-04 Roosevelt Ave., on Feb. 13, at around 1:25 a.m. following a dispute, according to police.

The two men had gotten into an argument which quickly turned violent, with the suspect allegedly grabbing a pipe and striking the victim multiple times with it in the head and body, cops said. It is unclear if the two men had been socializing inside the bar/restaurant beforehand.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot eastbound on Roosevelt Avenue towards 80th Street, police said.

The victim was transported to an area hospital and treated for injuries to his head and body, police said.

The alleged assailant is described as 5 foot 6 inches tall and weighs around 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, dark-colored pants, and a black baseball cap.

Police on Thursday, March 16, released two images of the suspect wanted for questioning.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org/, on Twitter .

A group of violent robbers took hammers to one of their victims in Brooklyn and beat him until his skull was fractured and his spleen ruptured, police said Thursday.

The 36-year-old target was with a 26-year-old man on N. Seventh St. near Kent Ave. in Williamsburg when four men approached them around 11:30 p.m. Feb. 18, cops said.

Each of the attackers pulled out a hammer and they took the 26-year-old man’s cellphone and car keys.

When older man walked toward a van, the robbers pulled him in and repeatedly pummeled him with the construction tools, police said.

The victim was struck multiple times in the head and body.

The robbers took off and the victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

The younger man was not injured in the robbery.

Police are still looking for the group of men and are asking for the public’s help in identifying them. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

NYPD officers wrestle with a big man inside a Five Guys.

- Pathetic scenes like this one are guaranteed to result when you handicap your law enforcement officers.

- As usual, the lady cop's main contribution is to make an obstacle of herself.

11/03/2023

This is why officers used to have and use billy clubs.

They also used to use wrestling maneuvers to compel a suspect to comply, but they are now forbidden by the state legislature and city council.

To anyone pleased with those decisions: Enjoy losing - you excel at it. 👍

This incident took place around 2 a.m. on the Lower East Side.

The suspect was Shawndel Evans, age 26.

Cops released a new image of the accused Hazmat Killer on Monday — but the grainy surveillance shot still wasn’t enough for detectives to get a lead on the bizarrely dressed suspect.

The suspect is wanted for three gunpoint robberies in the past 10 days, too — all of which he wore his strange get-up for, cops said.

Kenny, assistant chief of the Manhattan North Detectives squad, noted, “The attire in all four incidences is exactly the same.

“The method is exactly the same, and he’s wearing a Tyvek suit.”

“Between the mask, the suit, the hoodie — the whole nine — we’re just having a hard time identifying him,” NYPD Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny acknowledged during a press conference…

UWS r**e suspect Jamel McIver was turned in by a member of his step-family.

He was already facing a pending s*x abuse case in the Bronx.

'McIver has a number of prior arrests, including one in 2019 in which he was charged with s*x abuse, s*xually-motivated burglary and acting in a manner injurious to a child younger than 17. He is due back in court in that case on March 29.'

'His arraignment for the new arrest was pending in Manhattan Criminal Court Monday. He lives in East Harlem, according to cops.'

He threatened the victim in an elevator.

The Suffolk County DA is calling for class B felony drug crimes — such as selling a narcotic or possession with intent to sell — to be made a “qualifying offense” for a judge to impose bail and detention.

He also wants a “death by dealer” law to put fentanyl peddlers in prison for a longer period of time.

Under New York’s 2019 criminal justice reforms, only class A felony drug offenses are eligible for bail.

More than 2,800 New Yorkers died of a drug overdose in the city — the vast majority involving fentanyl — over a 12-month span ending in July 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

By comparison, there were 433 homicides in the city last year.

Some dealers accused of possessing and peddling lethal fentanyl are being released back on the street to sell more of the highly addictive and dangerous drug that kills thousands of people — …

Two bills introduced in Albany by relatively moderate Democrats:

- Make it a Class D felony to attack retail workers and make it bail-eligible.
- Make petit larceny a felony if committed within two years of a previous conviction, and hike maximum jail sentences for first-time felons.

A huge slice of crime is committed by recidivists, with only 327 criminals accounting for 30% of New York’s 22,000 retail theft arrests in 2022. [A factor consistently ignored by bail-reform apologists.]

'But these bills will face a tough time even making it to the floor. The Legislature’s leaders are dead-set against serious changes to their pro-criminal handiwork ...'

At least some Albany Dems are willing to look New York’s ugly crime reality in the face — and take the actions demanded by the public to fight it.

Ray Kelly, 81, who twice served as NYPD commissioner under mayors David Dinkins and Mike Bloomberg, slammed the city for agreeing to pay out $6 million to protesters who were penned in, and some of them beaten or pepper-sprayed, by NYPD officers during a 2020 demonstration in the Bronx.

“They [the plaintiffs’ lawyers] know that the city will only throw money at these radical groups and that might amount to them as a payday — and it sure did, or it sure will,” he continued. “So it is absolutely I think gut-wrenching that they continue to do this.”

His comments came after the city agreed to shell out $21,500 to each to the more than 300 people that were “kettled” by officers in Mott Haven on June 4, 2020, as they protested police brutality in the aftermath of the caught-on-camera cop killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.

“The protesters were intent on provoking mayhem and grinding the city to a halt. There were several days of violent demonstrations. I this particular case, they violated a curfew that Mayor [Bill] de Blasio put in for two nights,” he said.

The NYPD had defended the tactics, with then-Commissioner Dermot Shea claiming they were “executed nearly flawlessly.” Shea also noted that some of the demonstrators were found to be brandishing hammers, lighter fluid, gas masks and fireworks.

“In the citywide riots that lasted for quite awhile in the Bronx, in Manhattan, and Brooklyn, about 1,000 cops all told were injured. But you’re right I think it’s actually the Corporation Council [the city’s law department] that’s looking to settle the cases,” Kelly said.

Ray Kell slammed the city for agreeing to pay out $6 million to protesters who were penned in, and some of them beaten or pepper-sprayed, by NYPD officers during a 2020 demonstration in the Bronx.

The father of a Manhattan man charged in a 2020 fatal stabbing in Hell’s Kitchen is now facing his own arrest for witness tampering over social media posts.

Steve Darbasie said he will turn himself in on Monday after an arrest warrant was issued by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

Video clips posted in December to an Instagram account with the handle “Ratzzzz13” show witnesses being interviewed about the attack by police and apparently identifying participants. The posts include images of pigs and rats.

Darbarsie said his son’s lawyer obtained the police video, but he declined to say who posted it.

The dad said the NYPD stormed into his West 57th Street apartment before dawn Wednesday morning looking for him — and traumatizing his sleeping girlfriend — while he was out of town on business. He called the police raid “shocking.”

“The DA will send a swat team to someone’s house to charge them with a felony for an Instagram post, but allow career criminals to roam the streets,” he said.

This is clearly due to some type of malevolent conspiracy:

John Jay College’s Data Collaborative for Justice: Black people were jailed at a rate 11.6 times higher than white people in NYC in 2021 — more than double what it was five years earlier.

All told, Black and Hispanic people made up almost 90% of jail admissions in 2021 despite only comprising 52% of the city’s general population, the review noted.

John Jay’s Michael Rempel, director of the data center and a co-author of the report, believes that criminal justice reforms have not done enough to focus on the racial disparity.

=> Maybe leveling every last remaining vestige of civilization will do the trick.

Authors and other experts say the racial imbalance will likely continue unless there’s a multifaceted effort to reform other areas such as housing, education, and mental health services.

Demolition is set to begin at the Brooklyn Detention Complex in the borough’s Downtown; part of the 2017 plan to close Rikers Island and replace it with four new “borough-based” jails.

The 815-bed facility held just over 300 male detainees when it was closed in late 2020.

The replacement jail is slated to have space for 886 beds.

Altogether, the new facilities (slated to open in 2027) would have a total capacity of just over 3,000 detainees — far less than the city’s current capacity of around 11,000.

Note that as of Jan 2023, the combined population of NYC jails was 5,821 - far more than the planned capacity of 3,000.

The plan to replace Rikers with smaller, community jails was a progressive pipe dream - maybe crack pipes.

Construction workers are set to begin work tearing down the Brooklyn Detention Complex in the borough's Downtown.

In September 2021 a man dressed in Hasidic garb shot and killed a man in South Ozone Park.

Ron Reeder, 52, was arrested in New Jersey late last month and extradited Thursday to New York, where he will face murder and weapons charges.

Reeder was arrested on Feb. 23 when the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and the NYPD stormed his apartment on Teaneck Road, according to NJ officials.

He is also facing weapons, drug, identity theft, and financial charges as part of a separate criminal case in the Garden State.

The victim, who was from Georgia, was killed not long after he was released from prison, where he’d been incarcerated on drug charges.

Ron Reeder, 52, the suspect who dressed in Hasidic-style clothes when he shot and killed a man in a 2021 caught-on-camera ambush in Queens has been arrested.

The NYPD has again lowered its requirement for police recruits, scrapping a timed, 1.5-mile run in the police academy.

The Post reported in July that the NYPD dramatically relaxed the police fitness test amid a record wave of retirements.

Without the timed run, the only [remaining] physical fitness criteria for NYPD hopefuls is the Job Standard Test, a multi-step course that needs to be completed in 4-minutes and 28-seconds.

The requirement was holding back otherwise-qualified candidates — especially women, who now make up about a fifth of the force.

The controversial move — which training Chief Juanita Holmes said will help more women applicants — sparked an intra-agency battle that Mayor Eric Adams had to settle.

A 40-year-old man was fatally shot during a poker game in a Harlem apartment that doubles as a neighboring gambling parlor, police said Wednesday.

Bryan Cummings was blasted in the torso in a first-floor apartment at the building on W. 137th St. near Malcolm X Blvd. about 2 a.m. on Tuesday, cops said.

Cummings, described by cops as a known Bloods member, was playing a hand of poker in the gambling hole when he was shot, a police source said. It’s believed he was attacked during a disagreement at the poker table, the source said.

“I was just devastated, because this time last year someone almost killed him,” she said. “Last year he was at a club and he got into a fight and he was stabbed, I think ... in the neck.”

Cummings had a 20-year-old son and made most of his money gambling, according to the devastated woman.
