Privacy laws require companies to be accountable. Now, how do you demonstrate accountability? Simple, keep the evidence of all the decisions and choices you make about GDPR.
The audit trail of what you did and why you did will be very important evidence in case of a data breach or an audit by authorities. This will be one action that will make a difference in determining whether your company has been negligent of its obligations or not.
So, always keep a log of all decisions and choices your company makes. This log should also keep what was decided, who decided it, why it was decided and when.
If you need help with this and compliance with other privacy requirements, send us an email at [email protected].

An important requirement of the EU GDPR is to identify, monitor and report personal data breaches. Companies do their best to protect customer’s data and have secure systems but sometimes things may go wrong.
But what is a personal data breach?
When an unforeseen or unauthorized person has access to personal data it is called a personal data breach.
GDPR has certain requirements for such situations. For instance, you need to notify the regulator within 72 hours if there is a possible risk to rights and freedom of the individual.
So, is your company ready to manage data breaches?

GDPR gives individuals the right to object to the processing of their personal data at any time. This effectively allows individuals to ask for stopping or preventing a company from processing their personal data.
An objection may be in relation to all of the personal data a company holds about an individual or only to certain information. It may also only relate to a particular purpose you are processing the data for.

The right to object only applies in certain circumstances.

A website with a privacy statement demonstrates transparency and respect towards users of your website. In some countries, it is mandated by law. For example, in the EU, this is a mandatory requirement in GDPR. I recommend including a privacy statement on your website as it creates trust with the client.
Now, using google to create your privacy statement is not a good idea. And, you do not want to spend a lot of money with a consulting firm either. How about downloading privacy statement and other templates as part of our privacy kit for the fraction of price you pay a consultant for a day?
Go to our company website and download your privacy kit with more than 25 privacy related documents and templates that help you and your company to accelerate your journey towards compliance.

DPIA (Data Protection Impact Assessment) is done before you start any type of data processing that is “likely to result in a high risk”.
To assess whether something is high risk or not, the EU GDPR is clear that you need to consider the likelihood and severity of any potential harm to individuals. Assessing the likelihood of risk is part of the job of a DPIA.
DO you need help with DPIA?

You may not need a full-time privacy officer in your company. How about identifying a person in your company? This person can help your company in compliance with privacy laws. Of course, this person must have the required knowledge about data privacy to help you in the matters related to EU GDPR.
In case you don’t have any such person, you can always reach out to me. If you need my advice once in a while or have me onboard, send me an email and I’d be happy to discuss things with you.

Personal data should be kept by a company for as long as it's absolutely necessary. After this, personal data must be deleted, archived or anonymized.
If someone was your customer 20 years ago, do you need their data now? I don't think you will. So, make sure you take action.
Do you have questions on what to do after data is no longer needed?
