((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) Each Christmas between 1963 and ’69, the Beatles sent their fan club members a goofy, nonsensical Christmas greeting on a flexi-disc. These will be featured this Saturday at noon with some other Beatles bits from the Radio Archive.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE - Christmas Edition)))) In the first segment it’s business as usual with Gary Owens on the air at LA’s KMPC. In the second and third segments it’s non-traditional Christmas music, and some of the Archivist’s Christmas traditions, including the old KUGN classic, "Chickens in the Chimes."
No chipmunks, singing dogs, or scratchy old Perry Como records, just some fun. No grandmas will be harmed. Saturday, noon to 1 Pacific at KOCF.ORG, and at 92.7 FM in the Fern Ridge Community.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) Wink Martindale is best known as the TV host of Gambit, Tic-Tac-Dough, and other game shows, but he was once a high-energy Top 40 disc jockey. He celebrated his 90th birthday last Monday. 1965 is the year of this week’s feature, KFWB in Los Angeles. He was later a more mild-mannered radio personality on Gene Autry’s KMPC in Los Angeles, of which we will also hear a sample from 1979. Martindale is also known for somewhat campy spoken word recordings like “Deck of Cards, and “Black Land Farmer, and he was an inspiration for Cheech & Chong’s Wink Dinkerson character. Wink Martindale, Saturday at noon, KOCF.ORG, and at 92.7 FM in the Fern Ridge Community.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) (((1985))) Jackson, or Jack Armstrong was the fastest talking DJ in the business, and he had personality, along with his alter-ego, “The Gorilla.” In spite of the “more music, less talk” approach that was common by ’85, some of his personality and energy still come through. He was on KKHR in Los Angeles at the time of this week’s feature.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) It’s Randy’s second annual Thanksgiving Turkey Leftovers show (as if the first annual wasn’t enough). While some turkeys are cute and lovable, others are hard core gobblers, but it’s all in good fun. Note that Wally Bowen’s show follows immediately at 1pm to help clear out any earworms.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) Last week's feature was the streamlined sound of #1 KHJ in Los Angeles,1968. This week, by comparison it's New York's #1 WABC in '68, which was more old school in their approach, E.G., a heavy use of jingles, more commercials, reverb, etc. ...but more emphasis on personality. Saturday, noon to 1 at kocf.org, and 92.7fm.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) My very first Radio Archive show featured a 1964 recording of The Real Don Steele in Portland, and by 1965 he made his way to LA. This week’s show is an especially good one, no explosions, from February 1968, KHJ in Los Angeles. It was the beginning of a “Million Dollar” (solid gold) weekend, so music spans the entire ‘60s up to that day. One great hit after another!

Speaking of transmitters, I had the speakers turned up in the booth one morning at the end of my overnight shift, and the morning news guy comes in, and says, “Tom, that’s what we have a transmitter for.”

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) A show catch phrase is “Fun radio as, it used to be,” and WNOE in New Orleans was definitely a fun radio station. This weekend’s episode features two personalities from June of 1963, Bob Chase, and Eddie Gale. WNOE had a strong competitor that kept both stations at the top of their game.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) Dale Dorman was a long-time morning personality in Boston Top 40 and Oldies radio, and was a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame DJ. Saturday’s episode is from March 9th, 1977 on the mighty WRKO in Boston. While many of the songs played are from ’77, several are from 1968, referencing call-in contests this day, the 68th day of the year, and the station’s promoted dial position, “68,” (680 KHz AM). The WRKO call letters represent the Radio Keith Orpheum movie studios that were co-owned with the chain of radio and TV stations for a short time. The FCC revoked all of RKO’s radio and TV licenses in the 1980s, hear more about it Saturday, noon to 1pm.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) This week’s vintage Top 40 radio playback is Bob Green on WKNR, Dearborn-Detroit from March 30, 1970. WKNR, promoted in its early days as “Keener-13,” knew Detroit, but not well enough to keep the 800-pound gorilla, CKLW at bay. WKNR’s Top 40 years were 1963 to 1971.

As the AM band continues to decline, six stations in Canada signed off for good yesterday. Four of those are stations I used to hear occasionally at night. I miss the old C-FUN 1410 in Vancouver from it's Top 40 days, but it hasn't been a music station for a long time. When it switched to talk, it was the first station in Canada to air Rush Limbaugh. He didn't last long in Canada though. They're smarter up there.

On June 14, 2023, Bell Media announced major layoffs and shut down six of their radio stations, all on the AM Band. At 11 AM EDT, all six of the affected sta...

Due to a computer failure, KOCF is experiencing intermittent silence. We have a volunteer named Ryan who is working feverishly to restore normal operations, but some regularly scheduled shows may not air this weekend.

((((RADIO ARCHIVE)))) Most of the available aircheck recordings are from major markets that the radio people who originally collected and traded them aspired to. However, the Archivist likes to occasionally feature small market radio as well when something surfaces. WKWK was a top 40 station in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1970, and the featured announcer is Don Nelson, who had a voice for major city broadcasting. He eventually became a TV weatherman in Houston, where he retired several years ago after 39 years in TV. Here, at his retirement he tells a bit of his story. https://abc13.com/houston-don-nelson-retirement-abc-13/530700/

Looking west down 9th St. (Broadway) at Pearl. The large building on the left is the W.E. Miner Building, first opened on March 1, 1925. After renames to "Eugene Medical Center," then "Eugene Professional Center," new owners have reverted back to the original "Miner Building" name. The first stereo FM broadcasts in Oregon (1962) originated from a penthouse that was added after this photo. KFMY, 97.9 MHz used the catchphrase, "The ultimate in high fidelity from the beautiful penthouse atop the Eugene Medial Center." Later it was altered to "The ultimate in broadcast sound, stereo." A month after KFMY's first stereocast that KPFM in Portland began multiplex stereo broadcasting. (Lane County History Museum photo.)
