The History of Georgetown Men’s Basketball is Finished!!

This letter is not to destroy the Georgetown Men’s Basketball Program, it has already done a great job of it. My name is Michael Graham, a member of the 1984 NCAA National Basketball Championships team representing Georgetown University, supposed to be a highlight of my life. Well, it has turned out to be the worst. I don’t want to blame the University students or Alumni, but maybe some people in charge. I’m not here to judge is there any reason why the 1984 NCAA Basketball National Championship has never been honored by the University?

I have my thoughts and reasons from the horse's mouth and actions. I want to hear from the President, the Athletic Director, and the current head coach. I know some have seen my response on social media and the pictures I got from my friends from Kentucky and Villanova about how they appreciated their basketball programs. It makes us look like some s**t. We made positive, and cultural history before the Fab Five in Michigan in a lot of ways, but we never got a 30 for 30 or anything of that nature. Trust me, I know the reason why and some others do too but will not talk or have their opinions on why they won’t talk.

I know the University does want me around by all means fine. I notice that they only have certain former players around and not all the NBA Hall of Famers is down with the new program. Here is the question that I have to ask “How are the incoming players going to know the past of Georgetown as a whole if you are going to throw them bits and pieces of its rich history of basketball tradition and that the University respects their former players from the past.

Well, I guess my social media rant with the pictures shook things up and now the University wants to celebrate our 40th with dinner. And I’m sure they will find a way to sell a ticket to some rich alumni to raise money for the basketball team and the current head coach will give us a bull s**t speech about how fellow players are appreciated. Well, they can keep the food and wipe their ASSES with it. It would be exploitation at its fullest. If we were close as a team, we would get together for dinner.

Here is what it boiled down to, you had a person who retired 30 years ago and yes you gave a job to play a positive role in helping keep the winning tradition, but you gave up power and it became a business. I was told by the best “You don’t ever let someone run your business that is making more money than the business from your business” John Thompson Jr.

I’m just saying I probably won’t ever be back on the hilltop, but this is all some of us have and why take that away, he’s gone can’t we celebrate and appreciate? The university is trying to keep its legacy with its Hall of Fame NBA Class and coach and leave out the bread and butter of the legacy from day one of coach John Thompson’s legacy which is each player that went through that university and on that basketball program.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt letter. It’s clear that you have a deep connection to Georgetown and its basketball program, and it’s understandable that you feel strongly about how the 1984 NCAA Championship team has been treated.

The 1984 NCAA tournament was indeed a historic moment for Georgetown, with the team defeating Houston in the championship game to win their first national title1. Your contributions, along with those of your teammates, were pivotal in achieving this milestone.

It’s unfortunate that the university hasn’t given the recognition you feel is deserved. Celebrating such achievements is important not only for honoring the past but also for inspiring future generations of players. Your concerns about the lack of acknowledgment and the selective inclusion of former players are valid and deserve to be addressed by the university’s leadership.

I hope that your letter prompts a meaningful dialogue with the President, the Athletic Director, and the current head coach. Your experiences and insights are valuable, and it’s important for the university to recognize and celebrate the legacy of all its players.

If there’s anything specific you’d like to discuss or if you need further assistance, feel free to let me know.

Go Hoyas! 🏀

This book is over 30 years overdue and now I must set the record straight. I want to tell my experiences from my first day of picking up the game in the 9th grade and my reason for playing it was not for love. My short hectic high school basketball career and college recruitment. My time on the hilltop and the real reasons I left and after I left Georgetown University, I got a stigma that I could only play for black coaches, my short professional basketball career playing overseas, playing for NBA former greats who turned coaches John Lucas, Cazzie Russell, Phil Jackson, Henry Bibby. And after my playing days which life has its experiences and blessed to give back and share my lie experiences. What you will be getting is the truth!! The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly life of Georgetown University’s Basketball enforcer Michael Graham from 1980 until today. Nothing off limit!!

30. Michael Graham (1983-84) - He only played one season and "
Wow, Thanks!

"Michael Graham averaged a whopping 4.7 ppg but it was the loudest sub 5 ppg in Hoya history. He made the NCAA all-tournament team in the Hoyas' championship year and was scary good (and just scary) in the Big East tournament as well. Twenty years plus after his one college season he made an ESPN.com list of the most intimidating figures in all of sports."

"Graham was big, mobile and a violent finisher in traffic. He took to his studies with substantially less enthusiasm and left before his sophomore season. His absence arguably cost the Hoyas national championships in 1985 and 1987. His was the greatest Hoya career that could have been."
