It’s the Halloween season and it is a tradition here on Two Chairs No Waiting to tell a spooky story or two around the campfire.

This year, as we did last year, we have a special guest storyteller. James Dodson has been coming to Mayberry events for a few years now as an "Andy Griffith" tribute artist. I thought it would be fitting to have him tell the story about "The Golden Arm" and I know you’ll enjoy his telling.

I always look for other stories that fit into the feeling of the season and I found this on about the "Hungry Mother." When traveling from Alabama to Andy's home town of Mount Airy, NC my wife and I always pass the freeway exit for Hungry Mother State Park near Marion, VA. Almost every year, with out fail, we comment on "why would they name a park 'hungry mother'?" I found out the story and I'll share it with you.

Finally, a story about a man all alone on a dark mountain road. Looking for help because his car won't stop.

This episode is spooky so be sure to keep those who might not sleep well, like Barney and Gomer, away from this one. I wouldn't want to have anyone staring darkness trying to spot someone looking for their golden arm or their mother.

Mayberry Days 2024 was held the last full weekend of September (25-29) and it was wonderful. That doesn't mean there weren't some snags related to hurricane Helene that struck hard about an hour and a half south of Mount Airy but the inconveniences suffered were minor. By just after mid-day on Friday, the weather had cleared and only a few downed trees and power outages were left to be dealt with. Most folks attending Mayberry Days didn't feel the impact as none of the venues hosting events suffered any ill effects.

Several of those who attended have called in with there reports of Mayberry Days. I know you'll enjoy hearing from them and their personal experiences as much as I have.

Andy realizes that Bee's feelings will be hurt is she thinks they don't need her and promptly dispatches Opie to mess the place up again. T. Graham Brown is an American country music singer and songwriter, known for his distinctive voice and blend of traditional country with contemporary sounds. I have been blessed to be able to speak with him, quote lines from the show to one another and, I’ll tell you, it was hard to keep up with him. This is a big moment for this podcast. We've reached 800 episodes. I started the podcast 15 years and 10 months ago. The official start date would be October 11, 2008 and that is 827 weeks ago. That means that in the last almost 16 years, I've only missed publishing an episode 27 times. That comes out to just missing less that 2 episodes per year. I'd say that's pretty consistent but I'd also say it shows how much I enjoy the topic of the podcast, The Andy Griffith Show.

I didn't really have anything planned for this milestone event and mentioned that to my wonderful wife, Jan. Unknown to me, she reached out to a number of folks that listen to or watch Two Chairs and asked if they would be able to record something in celebration of episode 800. Twenty-three folks were able to respond with videos and another two with written congratulations.

I am humbled by this response and and grateful that this podcast has created a community that has, over time, developed into true friendships.

Thank you to all of you for listening/watching and thank you for your friendship and support over the years. Let the Mayberry conversation continue.

Plot Summary Andy the Marriage Counselor:

The battling Boones, husband and wife, are engaged in an ongoing battle royal. Andy decides to put an end to their bickering by putting them on a probationary program of daily niceties. His brilliant idea backfires when the Boones turn nasty toward the rest of the town. Finally, Andy gives in when he realizes the couple's way of expressing their love for each other is based on their freedom to fight.

We'll review some notes and "Odd Facts Known by Few" related to the episode Andy the Marriage Counselor.
