GETTING COMFORTABLE
Log in to the sites you like in your headset and take some weight off by lying further back in your chair. But - headsets aren’t yet designed to work well like this, and you can only lie back so far, at least on Oculus headsets, depending on the kind of content you’re enjoying. VR is *really* immersive, especially if you are wearing headphones. Make sure you have made any arrangements you might need for privacy before you get your headset on and log in. There’s no built-in alarm, so set your watch or phone on vibrate if you have a time limit.

VR videos start at FULL VOLUME. If you don’t remember to turn the headset switch down before you play, click to pause and then look for the volume menu on the bottom left hand side of the player. Use your controller to drag the volume down, then click to resume.

For video and gameplay content, relax in your chair or recline on your couch, and adjust the headset so it’s comfortable. You can lie down, but avoid covering the headset sensors.
Click the Oculus button on the right hand controller to go Home then click Settings. On the RiftS (or Quest using Link), you’ll find this on the dot menu on the far right of the dash.
Select Reset View, then use the controller to drag the screen to a comfortable position. Click to confirm.

For POV (point of view) content, this just doesn’t work as far as we can find – so far. For now, your best option is to lean back in a chair or on your couch, and adjust both yourself and your headset for comfort every time.

Set up a separate email address and password for every system you use. If one site is comprised, your login data to other systems is not exposed. Use an email masking and password management system such as Abine’s Blur https://dnt.abine.com/ to keep them tracked and available both through your browser and your mobile device.

Use a prepaid debit card without a large balance such as the combined hard card / online service offered by Transferwise http://bit.ly/transferwise-2020. If your details are compromised, you can then easily block the card and replace it, and Abine also offer a masked credit card service in some locations.

Download a good anti-virus application such as BitDefender https://www.bitdefender.com.au/ to your local computer. If you’re installing software, this will pick up and quarantine suspicious files that could make you vulnerable to hacking or ransomware attack. Enable it on your web browser too.

Where possible, set up accounts using a desktop computer with robust security. It’s easier to set up your masked emails and passwords, it’s more likely that unexpected file activity will be noticed, and you can properly read that tiny print next to the opt-out box that will charge you USD50 per month for three additional sites. (Our first credit card cancellation, within hours of clicking the box).

Before entering your details, check the site has at least one point of contact, and endorsements or reviews from known sources, such as Mashable or TechCrunch. If a site offers PayPal, it is likely to have good security for your financial details, and a customer-focused resolution process.

Be responsible about checkING for new emails that might indicate your info has been shared across sites. Follow up immediately if you do not recognize the charge, which may be as simple as using the site’s support chat.

Create an account on the website or app for your VR manufacturer before you put the headset on. You might need to both create an account and download an app before you can start installation.

Be prepared for the first thing your headset does to be an update. If you haven’t done 1. the time is now.

Know your WiFi password. If it’s hard to remember, change it temporarily to something simple and then change it back later.

If you’re planning to access some AOVR, use a dedicated account system such as Abine https://www.abine.com/ for online privacy . This allows you to create an individual custom email address and password for every site, so if one is compromised your credentials on other sites are not at risk.

Use a safe debit card like Transferwise http://bit.ly/transferwise-2020 or PayPal for transactions where possible.

Consider using a separate SIM card for authentication to avoid spam text messages.
