Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 25 | Gremlins

MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄 WE DID IT (it was getting down to the wire there) we’re ending this challenge with the film Gremlins because of Kate’s character. She is a Jack of all trades in this small town knowing everyone and working many jobs and being most reliable. She doesn’t like Christmas but her reasoning isn’t because of being single or orphaned like many other women characters in Christmas movies. She’s smart and uses her skills of observation to ultimately be the one to figure out how to get rid of the gremlins. She’s able to hold her own and isn’t a damsel in distress, but also isn’t hypermasculinity’s in order to be capable of fighting for herself.

Thanks for filling as we did this challenge! Any movies you would add to this list?? Drop it in the comments!

Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 24 | Babes in Toyland

This film stars Drew Barrymore as Lisa who learns to enjoy and embrace her childhood instead of trying to rush herself into adulthood.
Lisa and her sister have a loving relationship instead of the common trope of siblings (especially sisters) hating each other.
Both are strong in their morals and stick up for each other and themselves.
Keanu reeves as the love interest doesn’t play hero. He willingly accepts help from his friends and Lisa without having to prove his masculinity. Toymaster is the Santa Claus figure of a his film and he’s played by an Asian man without being a stereotype he simply represents goodness and imagination.

Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 22 | Frozen

This is a Disney Princess movie that features two sisters. Elsa is to be queen and struggles with embracing her true self. Anna goes to find her sister and embarks on her own journey of discovering the world and unearthing family secrets in order to help Elsa. Overall this story is about true love in the form of sisterhood and we’re considering it a holiday (Christmas) movie because Arendale is stuck in an eternal winter and all holidays are winter holidays (even if the sales guy is pretending it’s summer lol) plus it’s in Christmas movie sections on major streaming platforms so we’re going with it.

Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 21 | A Christmas Mystery

This film stars Violet McGraw as Violet as she takes on the mystery of proving her best friends dad innocent. She is an observant girl with skills of sleuthing and deduction as well as spunky and confident. Despite these qualities her character doesn’t fall into the trope of her being “too smart for her own good” or scheming. She also doesn’t take on the “tomboy” role where she’s masculinized to make up for her being a girl. It’s also worth a note that none of the establishment of her character being smart is made at her expense. She isn’t bullied or portrayed as an outcast in order to establish her intelligence.

Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 19 | A Hollywood Christmas

This film stars an Asian woman movie director for a major studio that that carved a niche in the Christmas movie industry.
She is a multifaceted character in that doesn’t fall into the “horrible or emotionless boss” trope but she isn’t a people pleasing boss that just wants to be liked either. She commands respect and is able to connect with her cast and crew.
She likes her job and is passionate about it even though it would generally be the type of job in a movie that would be portrayed as a punishment or not something to be taken seriously. Overall the films main theme is less about romance and more about having passion for what you do.

P.S.
The fact that it’s a meta movie within a movie lends to lots of humor.

Christmas Movie Challenge: Day 18 | My One Christmas Wish

This film is about a woman who puts out an ad to stay with a family over the holidays. It features a Black woman lead who is a 26 year old college student, working multiple jobs, who deals with with unresolved trauma in her life while helping a group of troubled girls with theirs. It takes a look at the difficulties that holidays present for folks who don’t get to spend it with family or people who love them. Even though the film has some sad moments it does a great job of showing support and respect between the women featured in the film which leads to some great moments including the jumping off point of the film where Jackie posts an ad on Craigslist to find a family to spend Christmas with.
