Many thanks to and the staff for a very nice review of our recent Death Sneeze release. Chris let some very complimentary words flow from his pen and said “Knapp, Wen, and their various co-conspirators have crafted an album that is - to borrow a word from their label - cacophonous but also contains a million unique moments that are ripe for discovery.” Well we agree with that and also for us here at the label we think this album is the perfect representation of what we set out to do at the very beginning. It’s loud, it’s undefinable, it’s strange and esoteric and it has its footprints at points all over the world. The album is multiple genres and you would be hard pressed to answer an equation as basic as “what kind of music is this?” S**t we don’t know but we know it’s GOOD. It’s always really special to receive some year end love for our releases. Sometimes we feel like we are flapping around in the dark here not knowing what the hell we are doing. But then we receive some nice accolades like this and it makes us feel like hey maybe we are doing okay. But thank you to Chris Ingalls and the staff for including “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff in their “Top 20 Experimental Albums of 2024” list. Chris and popmatters have been very supportive of us here at our label and we couldn’t be more thankful to have an angel in our corner in a world full of devils. Cacophonous Revival is proud to release a stunning debut by a strong new force in the jazz and composition world. “Living Things” is the debut from Nicola Miller and is out today on vinyl. Cacophonous Revival is proud to add this to our ever expanding and thought provoking jazz canon. About the artist. Nicola Miller is an experimental saxophone player and composer based on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Her strange tender playing stretches toward the avant-garde while maintaining a foot in the lyrical and the mysterious. She has studied with saxophonist/composer Frank Gratkowski (a mainstay of the European improvised music scene) New York based
experimental composer Kirk Nurock and Grammy Nominated composer and drummer John Hollenbeck.

About the album. Living Things is a collection of compositions crafted over the winter and spring of 2022/23, exploring the intricate relationship between music and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from various living entities, each piece in this album embodies a unique approach to composition, rooted in the cellular approach to composition which was learned through private studies with renowned composer John Hollenbeck.
The title Living Things reflects both the biological significance of the cell—the fundamental unit of life—and its role as the smallest structural component in each composition. the pieces reflect the natural world with sounds taken from field recordings and intervallic structures taken from wildlife observations in Nova Scotia.

Bandcamp Friday! New release! Death Sneeze! Out today is the debut from Death Sneeze. Look I got to be honest this is one of our favorite releases we have done and it’s out today on CD and cassette. Here is what we said about it previously.

Cacophonous Revival is proud to bring you the debut from Brooklyn based, accordion led Death Sneeze. The duo of guitarist, accordionist and vocalist Mary Spencer Knapp and drummer Lily Wen eschew genres and boundaries and even languages on their exciting, raw, emotional and breathtakingly strange first album. The pair combine Spanish, French and English prose and fuse that together with a dizzyingly vast array of genres combining cumbia and merengue-style accordion, garage rock and bachata guitars, laptop percussion, jazz and disco punk grooves. The album was recorded in the Dominican Republic with contemporary jazz & Dominican roots guitarist, composer and arranger Isaac Hernandez. Mixed by drummer Lily Wen, this s**t is raw and unfiltered in an unapologetic punk rock type of way. These odd compositions sound like nothing out there today. Yet the music also seems very familiar. When we first received this at headquarters and gave it a listen we didn’t quite know what to think but the melodies stayed in our heads all day and dammit, we couldn’t stop humming it. That was when we knew we had to put this out. Available today on CD and Cassette.

We are heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of our friend Dave Petersen aka Hallucinogenic Bulb. Dave was one of the kindest artists I have ever worked with. His generosity and gentle spirit were unmatched in this small community. Dave was the catalyst in why this label even exists. Meeting him and our ensuing friendship led to Dave being our graphic designer for our first 16 releases. Dave also released what I always believed was his best album “Frail Vessel” with us. Working with him was always painless and easy and he made me laugh quite often. Dave was 29 years old and his passing will leave a huge hole in the experimental underground. Dave has battled health issues these past couple of years and he handled it courageously. Dave was a real one and bodied a true punk sport of community and DIY. Thank you for everything and we love you dude. Rest easy. ❤️

It has been previously noted and documented that the musical tastes here at headquarters are proudly eclectic. And what excites us the most is music that defies genre. We tend to get the most hyped over music that does not have a defined avenue. Music that does have a neat genre box for listeners to put the music into. Mike Patton famously once sang, “What…Is…It?” Maybe that’s what we like, the “what is it?” genre. Now with all of that prefacing behind us we are very ecstatic to be bringing you the debut album from Death Sneeze, the Brooklyn duo of accordionist and guitarist Mary Knapp and drummer Lily Wen. So your first question is “what is it?” Maybe It’s punk cabaret for misanthropes? Avant klezmer show tunes? Latin infused jazz rock for lovers? Maybe cumbia and merengue styled garage rock that you would listen to on the way to the disco?We can’t rightly say and we love that! When we first heard the album in full, the melodies created ear worms and we were humming these songs all day. How about some background on the album you say. Okay well composer and multi instrumentalist Mary Knapp starts composing new tracks with friend and co conspirator Lily Wen in Brooklyn back in summer 2021. Creative sparks fly and the duo realize there is something important here. The duo head to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and augment the project with the addition of contemporary jazz and Dominican roots guitarist Isaac Hernandez. They record the album at Vibrar studios and the debut album from Death Sneeze is born. We are super excited to help give birth to this exciting new entity. I hope y’all didn’t think we forgot about you. We didn’t I promise. Just been busy with life stuff, you know ? The purpose of this post is two fold. First order of business is, this label has been in existence almost 5 years and I have never formally introduced myself. Let’s rectify that. I’m Samuel Goff and all of the blame and/or compliments should be directed here. I’m a musician with a lifelong passion for music and we try our best to release music as our bio says not constrained by genre or borders but imbued with a sense of passion. I say “we” a lot when I write these posts and that makes it seem like there is a whole team here at headquarters working round the clock putting this stuff out but the “we” I am referring to is myself and my two insufferable cats, Mina and Money Cat.
The second order of business is to tell you about all of the great music we have coming your way. Wr will have some album announcements in the upcoming days. First in December we will bring you two powerful debuts, New York’s accordion based quasi punk Death Sneeze and from Canada we have atmospheric, haunting and naturist jazz from Nicola Miller on vinyl. Our first release of 2025 will be hometown hero SameStory brining industrial fire. Also up for 2025 is literally one of the best jazz albums these ears have ever heard with Camila Nebbia’s vinyl reissue of her masterpiece “Aura.” Also on deck for 2025 is haunting musique concrete from Italy’s Accursio Graffeo, a new one from improv maestros RAIC, a trip to Santiago with a solo album from yours truly and our first true metal release from Richmond’s Ecolideth. Repping their shirt in the photo. Can’t wait for that one. And of course we got other s**t we are cooking up but this is the confirmed releases for now. Nice review for our latest release from the folks over at culturedarm. Christopher Laws cleverly compares Samuel Goff’s “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” to Pruient and our favorite Smashing Pumpkins album “Adore.” For full context Chris writes, “that sits somewhere between Frozen Niagara Falls by Prurient and Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins, plus ritual chanting which might from one moment to the next be redolent of Tuvan throat singing or the dry heaves offset by microtonal percussive clanks and Dutch hardstyle of the rambunctious Javanese duo Raja Kirik.” Hey we like it! We are always happy to receive a nice write up in . They were kind enough to give a review of our latest release, “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff. Antonio Poscic writes that the album is “a borderline unhinged, painfully intimate and authentic reckoning with the religious dread of the American South.” He closes by calling the album “absolutely devastating.” We are very appreciative for both The Wire and Antonio for citing our work. “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” is available now on LP, CD and CS.

Chris gives the album a “9” out of 10 and writes that the album is a “…hourlong trip through Goff’s psyche, always thrilling and never dull.” In closing Chris writes that “….anyone listening to this utterly fascinating album has the potential to be greatly moved by it….” Again thank you to Chris and popmatters for the tremendous support of our small label and if you are willing to take the trip with this album, it is at times an engaging and harrowing trip. Out today! “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff!

”This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” is the second solo album from musician, percussionist, producer, writer and Cacophonous Revival label head, Samuel Goff. The album is a concept album about the role religion and Christianity has played in Goff’s life and commentary about growing up in a strict Christian household in the South. If a component of folk music is the tradition of passing down familial tales then by definition this would rightfully be considered a folk album. Although it is a fractured, dark and gothic take on folk music. Utilizing genres as diverse as deeply experimental avant garde, Waitsian junkyard folk, industrial dance, thrash metal, low key electronica, traditional Appalachian folk and an all vocal track the album keeps the listener in a constant state of wondering what is going to be around the next corner.
Goff released his debut solo album “Transmissions” in 2020 to critical acclaim. “Transmissions” was an all instrumental album that attempted to tell stories through sound. On “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” Goff uses his actual voice to tell stories of regret, guilt, trauma, hope, dysfunction, fear, desire and devotion. There is a three song spoken word suite following Goff as protagonist spinning autobiographical tales from his youth growing up in a dysfunctional and confusing south. There is also the all vocal track “Witch Spit” which utilizes 176 different tracks of voice to conjure up images of ceremony and nameless ritual. So what does all of this sound like? What if Tom Waits and Mica Levi had a love child who listened to Iancu Dumitrescu, Diamanda Galas, Nine Inch Nails and Slayer on his headphones on the way to church? “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” answers that highly improbable scenario. 2024 was a good year. We only released 3 albums this year. But the albums we released is exactly what we set out to do when we started this label almost 5 years ago. The three albums could not be more different stylistically, aesthetically and in genre. But they all share a common bond in that they are unique and original in scope. Their intent is urgent and powerful. And they all have some esoteric or strange elements. And they all share fantastic artwork and packaging that we can be proud of. In 2025, we will start the year with @samest0ry in March followed by Camila Nebbia’s solo opus “Aura” in the spring on vinyl. Also on board is two musique concrete albums one by Samuel Goff and one from Accursio Graffio. And we will bring you RAIC’s new album. A year we will be looking forward to. Samuel Goff - “Witch Spit” We are excited to bring you the first single and video from “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff. The track “Witch Spit” is a 10 minute all vocal journey exploring the depths of madness, ritual and ceremony. Comprised of 179 separate vocal tracks with no fancy studio trickery this is a tour de force of avant vocal art. Certain to please fans of Joan LaBarbara, Ghedalia Tazartes, Diamanda Galas, Mike Patton, Bjork Maja Ratkje and other artists who have pushed the boundaries of using the voice as an instrument. The video was directed by and starring our good friend Brazilian artist and filmmaker Virginia DiLauro. Mission Statement

Coming in January 2020 will be the launch of my new label called Cacophonous Revival Recordings. My aims and goals will be to not be constrained by genre or geography but to have a unifying theme. One of passion, excitement and experimentation in music. Cacophonous Revival will hope to comfortably release styles as divergent in genre as avant garde, world music, experimental, jazz, noise, metal, hip hop, punk, spoken word, classical, etc. We want to release albums sporadically, focusing on between 4-6 albums a year so that we can promote and give enough time and attention to each individual release. We will release in all formats including vinyl, cassette and CD. Cacophonous Revival also wishes to focus on a sense of community within the small world of experimental music hoping to work in conjunction with other labels.
