Nice review for our latest release from the folks over at culturedarm. Christopher Laws cleverly compares Samuel Goff’s “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” to Pruient and our favorite Smashing Pumpkins album “Adore.” For full context Chris writes, “that sits somewhere between Frozen Niagara Falls by Prurient and Adore by The Smashing Pumpkins, plus ritual chanting which might from one moment to the next be redolent of Tuvan throat singing or the dry heaves offset by microtonal percussive clanks and Dutch hardstyle of the rambunctious Javanese duo Raja Kirik.” Hey we like it! Thank you to culturedarm for the insightfully review. “This Is My Body This Is My Blood” is out now on CD, CS and DL. Double Gatefold Vinyl is out June 24. Link to order can be found in our profile.

We are always happy to receive a nice write up in . They were kind enough to give a review of our latest release, “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff. Antonio Poscic writes that the album is “a borderline unhinged, painfully intimate and authentic reckoning with the religious dread of the American South.” He closes by calling the album “absolutely devastating.” We are very appreciative for both The Wire and Antonio for citing our work. “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” is available now on LP, CD and CS.

Much love and thanks to Chris Ingalls at for this engaging and insightful review of our latest release “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff. Chris gives the album a “9” out of 10 and writes that the album is a “…hourlong trip through Goff’s psyche, always thrilling and never dull.” In closing Chris writes that “….anyone listening to this utterly fascinating album has the potential to be greatly moved by it….” Again thank you to Chris and popmatters for the tremendous support of our small label and if you are willing to take the trip with this album, it is at times an engaging and harrowing trip. The album is available on LP, CD and CS and you can find the link to the album in the comments.

Out today! “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” by Samuel Goff!

”This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” is the second solo album from musician, percussionist, producer, writer and Cacophonous Revival label head, Samuel Goff. The album is a concept album about the role religion and Christianity has played in Goff’s life and commentary about growing up in a strict Christian household in the South. If a component of folk music is the tradition of passing down familial tales then by definition this would rightfully be considered a folk album. Although it is a fractured, dark and gothic take on folk music. Utilizing genres as diverse as deeply experimental avant garde, Waitsian junkyard folk, industrial dance, thrash metal, low key electronica, traditional Appalachian folk and an all vocal track the album keeps the listener in a constant state of wondering what is going to be around the next corner.
Goff released his debut solo album “Transmissions” in 2020 to critical acclaim. “Transmissions” was an all instrumental album that attempted to tell stories through sound. On “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” Goff uses his actual voice to tell stories of regret, guilt, trauma, hope, dysfunction, fear, desire and devotion. There is a three song spoken word suite following Goff as protagonist spinning autobiographical tales from his youth growing up in a dysfunctional and confusing south. There is also the all vocal track “Witch Spit” which utilizes 176 different tracks of voice to conjure up images of ceremony and nameless ritual. So what does all of this sound like? What if Tom Waits and Mica Levi had a love child who listened to Iancu Dumitrescu, Diamanda Galas, Nine Inch Nails and Slayer on his headphones on the way to church? “This Is My Body, This Is My Blood” answers that highly improbable scenario. Album to be released on LP, CD and CS.

Super hyped to announce we are bringing Monochromatic Rainbows to CRR. In my former life before I foolishly decided to start a label I was a music writer. Approaching descriptors for Monochromatic Rainbows style or genre would be either a blessing or a curse. We seem to be attracted here at the label by music that defies genre boundaries. Such is the case then with the quartet’s debut “Sonder.” Is it post apocalyptic love songs? A score for a David Lynch film that doesn’t exist? Music Godspeed You Black Emperor would make if they because a chamber quartet? Quasi classical noise? Shoegaze classical? They could be all of this or none of this depending on how your ears process this emotional music. And f**k. It’s emotional. Imagine Ligeti for lovers. Whatever it is we are super excited to bring them on board. There will be more official type announcements and release dates soon we just wanted to share our enthusiasm for the record and what’s coming soon. Coming on LP this spring/summer.rainbows

was kind enough to review our two most recent releases in this months issue. Concerning “Pariah” the latest heavy slab from Among The Rocks and Roots, Rob Turner writes, “….even through melting ears, it’s hard not to be impressed….the pair deploy a series of dynamic traps, darting between silence and noise.” Rob also took the time to pen some words about the latest effort from Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi called “Diminished Borders.” He states of the album “…neater cuts that could have been captured in New York’s Greenwich Village in the early 1960’s give way to squalls that channel the wilder assaults of Brotzmann.” And also in what we feel is one of our favorite comparisons ever, “one song almost sounds like Albert Ayler running into a street drumming festival.” Eeeeeeeeyaaaaaa. To our ears Jazz should always sound like Ayler running into a street drumming festival. Amirite? Anyways many thanks to for continuing to give time and press to our little label here in the heart of the South. You can pick up one or if you are feeling squirrelly both albums by visiting the link in our profile. We appreciate the support of our listeners and all money we generate goes toward the next release so the more we sell the faster we get future albums out. Our recent release “Pariah” by Among The Rocks And Roots has garnered many kind words, most recently from Spyros Stasis at they placed “Pariah” in the best metal albums of December 2023. When we saw this we were quite giddy and a little blushing. Spyros writes that “The duo are masters of coalescing sounds and themes across different genres in a cohesive and exhilarating result.” He goes on to state that Pariah is “a wonderful successor to the exquisite Raga, and it showcases all the potency and bravery of Among the Rocks and Roots.” Folks seem to like this one. You can find “Pariah” via the link in our profile. “Pariah” certainly does run the gamut of human emotions, it’s is wrought with hope, rage, love, forgiveness, acceptance and anger. Expand your CRR collection today and get your grubby fingers on one of the best albums of the year. And thank you to for the kind words. Available now through link in profile

Among The Rocks And Roots album “Pariah” now up on all streaming services! If you know me personally or have been following the label for any amount of time, you will know that we harbor a distaste for streaming services. Not only do we enjoy the ritual of opening a physical album and having the music tangibly in our hands before listening, but there is also a warmth and a personality that a physical manifestion of an album gives the listener that can’t be duplicated by hitting a button on your cell phone. Also we abhor the business practices of streaming services with Spotify CEO Daniel Ek receiving the bulk of our derision. Because well they don’t pay the artists or label fairly while their net worth is 3.3 billion dollars. But we have had several people ask us to put the album on steaming services, and our desire to make our listeners happy supersedes our inherent hatred of the current streaming system. So you asked and we conceded. We will start putting releases from our back catalog on streaming as well because even though we at the label find the practice abhorrent, we also don’t want to live life with our heads in the sand. We would however ask that if you enjoy the album on streaming services to consider purchasing the download as well. This is a difficult business to keep your head afloat and bandcamp you know actually pays the artist for their art. And that in turn allows us to put out new music at a faster pace. S**t costs money you know? Anyway rant over. Enjoy “Pariah” on your preferred streaming service and don’t forget we have the album available on CD and DL and there is a preorder for the vinyl which will be out in the spring. And we will also let you know as some of our back releases hit the steaming platforms. Support small independent labels.

Thank you very much to for making “Pariah” by Among The Rocks And Roots as one of their top picks of 2023. We have had three of the five albums we released this year make various year end best of lists and we are very honored to have critics cite our work. We have the sneaking suspicion that we may be doing something right around here. 🤔Thank you for listening and thank you for the support and we hope that we continue doing things right in 2024. “Pariah” is available now. Big thank you to for naming “Pariah” by Among The Rocks and Roots #4 on their year end “Best Post Rock and Noise Rock Releases” Damn. It’s a big honor here for us and the accolades we have received here lately are starting to make us think maybe we are doing something right 🤣. says that Pariah “takes a melodic and rhythmic approach to noise rock”, while also exploring “uncomfortable sonic places….” And that is pretty spot on. Try it out for yourself. There is a pre order for the double vinyl in the link in our profile and you can grab it on DL and double CD right now. As always the link is in our bio and thank you for listening and for the support.

There have been a lot of good words written about our latest release “Pariah” by Among The Rocks and Roots. recently chimed in with writer Antonio Poscic stating the the duo “ take post-metal and hardcore aggression to rapturious new heights.” He also states “ immense pillars of drums and bass guitar noise eclipsed only by their agonising emotional blows. Pariah, the closing chapter of this trilogy, is equally transcendent.” We would like to extend a big thank you to both Antonio and the Quietus for taking the time to write about our album. “Pariah” is available on CD, DL and there is a preorder for the spring release of the Double LP. You kind of have to hear this one to believe it. Link to order in bio.

Our recent release the wild trio album “Diminished Borders” from Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi found its way into year end Top Jazz Albums of 2023. Big thank you to and popmatters for supporting our work here at the label. Chris writes “Diminished Borders brings together these three multitalented, eclectic performers known for creating wide-ranging albums on their own and thus benefit from an even broader artistic canvas as a trio.” It was a fun record to make and who knows? Maybe there might be another in the future ? 🤔🤔🧐🧐

Our newest release “Pariah” by Among The Rocks And Roots caught the pen of metal site Angry Metal Guy. They had this to say about the album, “Mesmerizing percussion and distorted bass lines form the spine of the record, over which rage the bellowed post-hardcore vox. A grimy, gritty blend of early Swans and Primitive Man, with some of the harsh unpredictability of Duma, Pariah rails against racism, white supremacy, and inequality (“Triumph”), as much as it paints the self-loathing of, and inner strength needed to beat, addiction (“III”). “Pariah” is unlike anything in our catalog and we would surmise unlike anything in anyone’s catalog. You can grab “Pariah” on double CD, DL and there is a pre order for the double vinyl which will be out this Spring. Combat the cheerfulness of the Holiday music swirling around you with the crushing and oppressive onslaught of Pariah.

Out today! “Pariah” by Among The Rocks And Roots!

Cacophonous Revival is proud to present our heaviest album to date, Pariah by Among The Rocks And Roots. Pariah is the band’s third album and most ambitious effort to date. A double album comprising 4 songs and a hefty 91 minutes, the album was recorded over the span of 23 months at Richmond’s Etching Tin Studios with co-producer and engineer Richard Schellenberg. Recording started at the beginning of the pandemic so the band decided to focus more on production and songwriting rather than trying to capture their blistering live presence in the studio. “Pariah” mixes the brutality of the Swans early era with the symphonic and orchestral leanings of Godspeed You Black Emperor. In addition to their trademark wall of sound, the band utilizes new tools in their arsenal employing string sections on two songs, acoustic guitars, sound collages and fugue type vocals to augment their noise rock, metal and world music leanings.
Among The Rocks And Roots have been a mainstay of the Richmond, VA. noise, metal and rock scenes for 8 years now. Members Abdul Hakim Bilal and Samuel Goff have been exploring new ways to push the limits of heavy music. The foundation for the band’s formation was the aspect of the duo’s struggles with addiction and ensuing sobriety. The band explored these themes on two albums, 2015’s Samudra Garba Pathe and 2018’s critically acclaimed Raga released on PTP on double vinyl. The band’s sound focuses on volume and intensity and have built a following based on their hectic, passionate live performances. The band incorporates elements of heavy music like metal and noise and infuses with that an emphasis on polyrhythmic drumming to create a fractured, heavy world music. Colin Joyce of Vice described the band’s sound as “...a thoughtful approach to heavy music structures, embracing percussive polyrhythms and ecstatic dynamics, in addition to the running-into-a-brick-wall blasts of their more chaotic moments.”

Damn we have been feeling the love here at headquarters this week. “Submerging Silently” the fantastic trio album courtesy of Jessica Ackerley, Kevin Cheli and Gahlord DeWald came in at No. 10 on Top 20 Experimental Music albums of 2023. Wow. Chris Ingalls calls the album an “intense, profoundly inspirational performance.” Yeah Chris absolutely. We are super proud of this album and it totally deserves all the praise it has received. True story. When Jess first talked to us about this album we were like “okay well send it along so we can give it a listen.” After 7 seconds of listening we were like “F**k. Yes.” It didn’t take long for us to hear the fire and the passion involved and we know you will hear the fire too. You can find the link to the album in our bio. Available on CD, Cassette and DL.

Two days in a row we are blessed with very kind words from yet another writer that we deeply admire at the label. Our upcoming release “Pariah” by Among The Rocks And Roots was very thoughtfully reviewed by our friend Dave Foxall over at . Dave writes of the album in his long form review, “This is heavy… an atmospheric, elegiac, yearning, defiant, soul-scrubbingly cathartic, harshly beautiful suite of doom, noise, metal and indie esoterica. But most of all, it’s heavy.” Yeah. We tried to warn y’all this one was heavy. Cowards need not enter on this one. Again we would like to send our best graces to Dave for taking the time to listen and to write such nice words. “Pariah” comes out on CD and download Friday and there is also a preorder available for the vinyl which will come out in April. We guarantee this will be the heaviest, most soul crushing album you will hear all year. Link to preorder Pariah is in our bio.

It’s always a good day at headquarters when a nice review comes in. Our latest release “Diminished Borders” by the trio of Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi was the beneficiary of kind words courtesy of the the pen and pad of over at . Chris gives the album a solid “8” and writes “Diminished Borders brings together these three multitalented, eclectic performers known for creating wide-ranging albums on their own and thus benefit from an even broader artistic canvas as a trio.” Also later he gives a nice Coltrane (!!) reference in writing of the album’s final track “A Thousand Tiny Fibers Dissolving In Space.” “The track is somewhat reminiscent of “Psalm”, the fourth and final movement of John Coltrane‘s A Love Supreme, as the rolling toms and lyrical saxophone notes give the album a sense of closure and clarity.” Geez 🤯 In our former life before we had the idea to start a label, we were a writer so we know and appreciate the work that goes into writing a piece so we would like to thank Mr. Ingalls both for the kind words and for listening and writing such encouraging words about our release. “Diminished Borders” is available on CD, cassette and the far less sexy download. Out today! “Diminished Borders” by Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi!

Cacophonous Revival is proud to present another strong entry into our growing jazz influenced catalog. Diminished Borders by Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi presents a powerful drums/sax/sax trio that provides a wide spectrum of diverging moods and genres. Contained within the 8 pieces are styles ranging from chaotic free jazz to introspective and almost tender pieces where Nebbia and Shiroishi articulate a deep and emotional framework to carry the listener into melancholic dreams. These tender songs buffer some of the more atonal, avant garde selections. There is also an almost playful piece where Nebbia and Shiroishi lay down some beautiful solos over Goff’s polyrhythmic drumming. This is in stark contrast with the chaotic spazz jazz toward the end of the album.
“Diminished Borders” was recorded at vastly different parts of the world or across borders with musicians with divergent backgrounds. Recorded in Richmond, VA, Lyon, France and Los Angeles, CA. the three musicians here have long been entrenched in the experimental and jazz underground music scene and this album shows the strength in both unity and individual performances of that experience. Also the album is loosely based on “Spit Temple” by Chilean poet Cecilia Vicuña who wrote often about borders having crossed many herself. Borders mean so much in this world. The piece of land you currently stand on dictates the fate of your life. Crossing borders oftentimes means life or death. We would like to see the importance of borders….”diminished.”

Our upcoming album “Diminished Borders” by the trio of Samuel Goff, Camila Nebbia and Patrick Shiroishi received some good words courtesy of the publication, Salt Peanuts. Eyal Hareuveni writes, “The interplay of Nebbia and Shiuroishi is natural and organic, soaring beautifully over the powerful polyrhythmic patterns of Goff, and makes it hard to believe that they were not in the same space at the time of the recording. “ We would like to thank Eyal and Salt Peanuts for writing about the album and it’s currently available for preorder on CD, CS and DL. Album releases this Friday!

As 2023 nears its ugly end, we are looking forward to 2024 and what we have in store for the new year. Here is what we have upcoming at the label in 2024. Some of these were supposed to be released this year and when we h expectedly had a health emergency we basically had to shut the label down for six months. We apologize to the artists affected and we appreciate your patience. However we are coming back strong in 2024 with some strong titles we are proud yo add to our roster. We are going to try and work double fast this year so we can get even more music out in the world. Thank you for your support as always

Mission Statement

Coming in January 2020 will be the launch of my new label called Cacophonous Revival Recordings. My aims and goals will be to not be constrained by genre or geography but to have a unifying theme. One of passion, excitement and experimentation in music. Cacophonous Revival will hope to comfortably release styles as divergent in genre as avant garde, world music, experimental, jazz, noise, metal, hip hop, punk, spoken word, classical, etc. We want to release albums sporadically, focusing on between 4-6 albums a year so that we can promote and give enough time and attention to each individual release. We will release in all formats including vinyl, cassette and CD. Cacophonous Revival also wishes to focus on a sense of community within the small world of experimental music hoping to work in conjunction with other labels. In fact our first release will be a joint release with Orb Tapes. IG, Facebook and bandcamp pages will be ready by Jan. 1. Thank you for listening and I’m looking forward to many incredible journeys with this venture.
