Resting our weary bones at Xannadu Lavendar Farm. It’s nice to stop for a while, but the heat wave is kicking our butts. Watson loves having a “home.”

Moved a short distance to a Yakima. Not sure why I keep forgetting that the word vineyard translates as “up a giant hill.” It’s beautiful up here. Panoramic.

I had a flight of wine and walked around the picturesque vineyard. Watson got petted 27 times. It was hot and we needed shade. There was a back porch with a canopy of vines over it, and only one person occupying the space. Perfect.

“Can Watson and I share your shade?”

“Sure, but I’m setting up my mom’s baby shower. It’s her 5th child but her first ever baby shower. “It starts at 3.”

“Ok, we’ll skedaddle before then.”

She was sitting in a pile of baby shower decor, surrounded by bare tables, waiting for backup. She told me her name is Sarai (sare-ee) and she’s 16. She told me about her siblings. A brother, age 9; two sisters, Aspen and Emberly, ages 7 and 3; and they don’t know the name or gender of the baby on the way. She showed me photos of adorable blonde, blue-eyed children on her phone.

She said she wants to travel to Italy someday.

“Are you Italian?”

“No, but I am Spanish. From a very specific region. I never knew my dad, but I know where he’s from. Once a lady asked if I was from that region of Spain and I felt so proud she recognized that in me.”

We chatted about how complicated it can be when you have a big family. About how we are choosing different paths than what was laid out for us. She said her path is to believe in God and have faith. I told her I’m not of the same religion, but I understand what she feels. She was mature not beyond her years, but beyond this world. I’ll bet you know a kid like this too. Gen Z is next level.

“Speaking of paths, take that one right there to the end and you can see the sunset from right at the top of the cliff overlooking the valley.”

Her mom facetimed to see how decor was coming along. They briefly discussed that nothing can be done until table runners arrive. She turned the phone around and said, “This is Terisa and Watson!”

Mom said, “I met you earlier. Come to the baby shower! I’ll supply the food and wine, but you have to play the games.”

I told her I’d go change into a dress and be right back.

When I returned, the backup had obviously arrived and what they put together in 20 minutes was amazing. All the siblings, aunts and grandma were there.

I met a diverse set of women who were all perfectly accepting that “the woman who came out of that bus down there is joining us.” I chatted with several kind souls and played some of the games, not all. I did drink the wine and fill up on decadent snacks. I accidentally ate a macron off someone else’s plate.

“Oops, I thought you were my sister.”

We both laughed.

Reality resumes tomorrow at the repair shop.

The first official night on the road. It was a beautiful drive for 3 hours and in the fourth hour the sky became dark and stormy. I captured this shot just before the skies opened up and the lighting cracked for hours. There was a tornado warning and the bus rocked back and forth. We made it through the night and continued on.
