In a quaint little town in the Northern Free State of South Africa, we stumble upon the sad remains of a historic train station.

This morning was a particularly freezing one, don’t let the sunshine fool you. The winter temperatures in Parys often dip well below what is considered comfortable, and this morning we had to wear two jackets just to function.

This, and numerous other train stations are a silent witness to a bygone era of innovation and perseverance, now left abandoned and forgotten in today’s fast paced world, marred by disposability.

So, join Rogue and Sinister as we brave the crisp weather on this exploration, to discover what remains of a train station that dates back to 1905…

In this episode we’re exploring a mostly forgotten historical site at an active military base in Pretoria, South Africa. We arrived just before sunset, and managed to get some beautiful drone shots in before it got dark.

This location dates back to the Anglo Boer War, with Fort Commeline constructed in the 1880s. In 1894 the site was repurposed and developed for munition storage and later also ammunition production, and it became known as Magazine Hill. Today it is still an active military base, now known as Salvokop Artillery Regiment. This location is however marked by a tragic event…

This is the final part and conclusion of our exploration of an Abandoned Hospital that dates back to the year 1910.

Through a history stretching well over a 100 years, this Hospital has seen its fair share of changes, upgrades and expansions, which made it difficult to find our direction. Certain areas were closed off over decades of changes, but during our 3x days of exploring this location, we finally covered the entire compound, to show you the various departments and buildings that make up this massive facility.

As mentioned in part 1 and 2, due to political sensitivity, the advanced state of decay of most buildings, and on-site security that guard the few residents that still live in the remaining homes on the premises, we will unfortunately not disclose this Hospital’s location.

So, join Rogue and Sinister as we conclude our exploration of this massive facility. And let’s see what we find in part 3, as we explore what remains of the Mortuary, the Pharmacy, the Operating Theaters, the X-ray & Hydrotherapy Department, and finally the Department of Health’s Offices…

ABANDONED HOSPITAL (110 YEARS OLD) - PART 1 of 3

Today we are exploring one of our most favorite locations to date. An Abandoned Hospital that dates back to the year 1910, making this location over a 110 years old.

This Hospital stood through a tumultuous history, of British Rule, to Apartheid South Africa, and the dawn of the Democratic New South Africa, just to be abandoned and forgotten during the first two decades of the new millennium.

What we find during our Urbex mission will have to color the picture for us, and hopefully give us enough insight into what this facility offered, and maybe a hint at what caused its ultimate abandonment.

Due to political sensitivity, the advanced state of decay of most buildings, and on-site security that guard the few residents that still live in the remaining homes on the compound, we will unfortunately not disclose this Hospital’s location.

CAUGHT BY SECURITY - ABANDONED RAILWAY STATION

On a cold afternoon in July, we set out to explore an abandoned railway station known as Viljoensdrift, named after the nearby small settlement that dates back to before the first world war.

Today the settlement has been taken over by vagrants and squatters. The station is no longer in use, and considered abandoned, however it remains relatively intact, mainly because railway security still keeps an eye, due to the active railway lines between the station and the settlement.We’ve also heard rumors of a First World War memorial at this location, which we really want to find.

So, join Rogue and Sinister as we risk being caught by railway security, to see what is left of this station dating back to 1892.

THE LION LODGE - ABANDONED

Towards the end of our summer in the south, we came across an abandoned place, once known as The Lion Lodge. As we entered this location, it almost looked like a movie set. In the sweltering heat, this place must’ve once been an oasis. Now, covered by tall grass as nature starts to reclaim this property. Why would this lodge be abandoned? Would we come across the remnants of a disaster? Would we be able to find any clues left behind?

Today we explore The Gable House, with a distinctive architecture style that dates back to the 1700s. On a property that is mostly overgrown, sits a home, that in its heyday would not look out of place on a Stellenbosch Winery.

However, strangely this property is nowhere near the Western Cape, and furthermore the home hides a dark secret from the 1960’s, which was a time of segregation in South Africa. It was a time of massive uprisings from the oppressed and inhumanely treated citizens of our beloved country.

We will briefly discuss some of this history during this exploration. So, join us as we do a walk-through of this unique property, to see what remains after it’s abandonment roughly 5 years ago…

I have been on two wheels for a good few years now, and have been blessed to be able to enjoy all the ups and downs of riding and owning various motorcycles. For these past few years my retired father and youngest brother joined me on their own Harley Davidson's. We have done a few awesome rides to quiet places, breakfast runs here and there, and short trips just to ease the mind and soul……

But today’s trip will be different, more special in a sense. We have been planning and talking about this day-trip for a long time, and now the day has finally dawned!

More than 3x decades ago, on 13 January 1991, a tragedy happened that would leave a nation in shock. This location, known as the Oppenheimer Stadium, once hosted sporting events, including soccer matches between some of the biggest football clubs in South Africa.

On the outskirts of a Gold-mining town named Orkney, the remnants of this Stadium can still be seen. Including the memorial wall, erected in remembrance of the 42 soccer fans that died on that fateful day, in a place that was meant for fun and celebration.

So, join us as we explore what remains of this place, ravaged by a sad history, looting and scrapping during the pandemic lockdowns, and the slow decay of time…
