JEROME WHITE HIP PRESENTS THE RECOVERY AND BURIAL OF THE BONES OF CHIEF SITS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAND, 1978 -- THIS THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7TH AT NOON

-- In-Person in the Library Programs Room, on Facebook, and on Zoom

Lodge Grass elder Jerome White Hip will present on the location, discovery and burial of the alleged bones of prominent Crow Chief Sits in the Middle of the Land, born in about 1795 and who died in 1877.

Sits In The Middle Of The Land (Awe Kualawaachish), also known as Iche Shipite (Blackfoot) was the Chief of All Chiefs of the Crow tribe from the 1850s to the end of his life. He was a well known, tall warrior and powerful orator. He represented the Crows in treaty and other negotiations with the United States.

While on a hunting trip near Meeteetse, Wyoming in the fall of 1877, he developed pneumonia and died. Some have said he was buried in a cave in the area. Others have said he was buried elsewhere. In 1978, an eastern psychic by the name of Mrs. Victoria Mauricio convinced some Crow tribal members of the location of his bones and eventually, upon the location of some remains, they were retrieved and buried near the College. Although controversy surrounds this event, it is nevertheless a part of the Crow experience and will be the topic of this Thursday's program.

The nursing home in Crow Agency today is named after the chief.
