Mercedes National High School made remarkable wins after bagging seven placements in the first-ever joint 2024 Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) and Division Festival of Talents (DFOT) hosted by Oras, Eastern Samar, from April 10 to 13.
Amassed by around 5, 400 participants from 27 different competing districts for both events, the scribes from MNHS made six placements in DSPC while a lone placement in DFOT.
DSPC Winners
In the Individual category, competed by more than 40 participants from different schools, Frankie Cainong, Editor-in Chief of The Free Verse, aced the 2nd placement for the event of News Writing. Cainong also competed in Editorial Writing where he finished in 5th place.
Meanwhile, Bobby Pagatpat, a sports writer, bagged the bronze medal after his 3rd placement in Pagsulat ng Balitang Isports.
Alexandra Ogrimen and Dyna Reuela Labutap, on the other hand, made a historic comeback in News Writing and Pagsulat ng Balita as both landed in 5th place.
Moreover, under the Group category, Joshua Pagayanan, Editor-in-Chief of Ang Malayang Pahayagan, and Ella Mae Tungol, a reporter of said publication, aimed the 2nd placement for Mobile Journalism in Filipino where they showcased the town of Oras in their mobile report.
School Paper Adviser Meldrid Delleva said it was a big recognition for the school the anew placements of all of these winners, who are also Grade 12 students, during the DSPC. She also encouraged those who did not make it this year to not give up.
"Congratulations, everyone. Damo pat at journey and to the graduating best luck to all of you. Damo pa at journey hit mga next press con huwag kayong sumuko [Congratulations, everyone. We still have so many journey for the next Press Conferences, so don't give up. To the graduating students, best of luck to all of you.]," Delleva said.
DFOT Winner
After a defeat from last year's entry, the STEMAZING team of MNHS reached the 5th placement contested by Nica Lumagbas and Niezy Ann Gajol, both Grade 12, and Angelo Serapin, a Grade 11 student.
Under the coaching of Ma'am Purisima Athena Cabaguing, she said that it was a challenge for them to make it to the top basing from the fact that they came from a non-Stem school.
"With the team, I really cried there with my heart that we reach it to rose from the rank cause in the first place, we are not a STEM SCHOOL with complete training. A big help [that] I ask one week intensive training to ma'am Masayon [PSDS of Mercedes District] and she granted that's why we had a little bit focus for a week," Cabaguing said.
Further, the winners fail to enter to the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) and Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT) based on the guidelines that only the first placers will advance to the next competition.

Mercedes National High School's campus journalists aced three placements on the awarding ceremony for 'Best Output' during the Division Training Workshop on Campus Journalism for Secondary School Paper Advisers and Campus Journalists held at Guiuan National High School, March 8 and 9.
Mobile Journalism
Bagging the first place, Joshua Pagayanan and Ella Mae Tungol bested the 3 other competing schools for Mobile Journalism under the Filipino category.
For the English category, on the other hand, Keen Aldrix Nicart and Carl Shane Gajelan secured the second spot.
With the newly-set guideline, Mobile Journalism was done in pair where it involves exclusive reporting of events through the use of mobile phones.
Individual Writing
Being the lone placer for individual writing, Frankie Cainong made it to 4th place for Editorial Writing in English with more than 40 participants competing in the same event.
These journalists promises to keep the momentum and others to improve their skills for the Division Secondary School Press Conference (DSSPC) where the actual competition for best of the best journalist will happen.
Further, DSSPC is slated in Oras, Eastern Samar this coming April 11 to 13.

For years have gone by, countless women cement identity in the male-dominated world. Slaved for centuries, manipulated for years- they were housed, rightless, and incapable of leadership. A complete oppression of humanity. This Women's Month signifies that they can slay and rock the stage of triumph, even dominating the world that men never imagined to happen.
A Maria Clara you know does not only hold rosary on their purses now. She prays in high vocals. She's not afraid. She has strong punches, if not guns, ready to shoot you with the things you never know she's capable of.
She became a political leader. The voice of the voiceless. She became a police officer. A woman who rescues damsels in distress. With her alluring stories of hope, she has fully embraced the traditional Maria Clara into an empowered Gabriela.
Yes, days are gone that women will stay silent with bruises in face, with men whistling to them across the street, and be limited to washing dishes or brushing shirts under husband's mandates.
While some are still chained tightly in a corner, this festive celebration for women calls out for a butterfly to flock with others and fly freely above the sky. Even be an eagle with keen eyes and calculated moves but with such complete independence, reaching skies.
This festivity emerges with limitless possibilities a woman can have. You can't jail them. We can't stop them. We cannot. We shouldn't. Atlast, they are women. You are. She is. And not just.

πππΏπΌππ: Through an Executive Order released late night, the Office of the Municipal Mayor declared suspension of government works and classes today, March 4, after Mercedes hosted the three-day staged Eastern Samar Provincial Athletic Association Meet (ESPAAM).
Hon. Quiminales earlier announced the suspension in the Closing Program of ESPAAM 2024 with respect to teachers, students, and key persons involved for the successful commencent of the event.
Meanwhile, before the order was released, Mercedes National High School mandated the use of Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) through modular platform.
Classes will then resume tomorrow, March 5.

Anton Henrick Balagbis, Unit II, and Victoria Renell Rosales Nuguit, Unit I, clinched the titles as Mr. and Ms. ESPAAM 2024 after besting four candidates from other competing units.
The selection came forward after the candidates ramped in their sports attire during the Opening Program took place last February 28 held at Bobon Sports Oval.
Further, the two will represent Kidlat Este as Es**rt and Muse in the upcoming Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet this May at Ormoc City.

π½πππΌππππ: Unit IV reigns as the Overall Champion in the three-day staged Eastern Samar Provincial Athletic Association Meet (ESPAAM), breaking Unit II's 4th consecutive year- championship.
Represented by the municipalities of Guiuan, Lawaan, Balangiga, Salcedo and the host Mercedes, the unit sets another record with the most number of gold medals garnered from both the events of elementary and secondary category, announced in the concluded Closing Program at Mercedes Church Plaza.
Hosted by Mercedes, ESPAAM 2024 marks its conclusion today.
Further, Municipality of Oras is set to host ESPAAM 2025 with Muncipal Mayor of Mercedes, Edwin B. Quiminales, challenging to take home the championship from Unit IV.

Municipality of Mercedes embraced thousands of Eastern Samar's athletes, coaches, and chaperons as this year's host for Eastern Samar Provincial Athletic Association Meet (ESPAAM), from February 28 to March 1.
Around two thousand delegates from Unit I, II, III,and IV gathered at the newly-constructed Bobon Sports Oval for the opening program where Hon. Edwin B. Quiminales greeted the dignitaries and participants in behalf of the host municipality.
In his welcome remarks, Hon. Quiminales emphasized the collaboration and teamwork to provide the delegates with memorable experiences in Mercedes as first time in its history hosting such big event.
"Ha ngaran po han Local Government Unit han Mercedes, ako po in mapaso nga nakarawat han pagkanhi niyo para han ESPAAM 2024. Ini in giuunahi nga hinabo ha Mercedes, first Provincial Meet [ha Mercedes]."
"San-o ako magpadayon, karuyag ko magpasalamat anay ha mga tawo nga naging kasugbong ko pagplano. Diri ini madadayon kun waray ini nga mga tawo magsuporta han aton plano."
He then reiterated to thank the people behind the preparations especially the different barangays, school heads, teachers, and staff of Mercedes district.
Meanwhile, in behalf of the district, Public Schools District Supervisor (PSDS) Natividad Masayon also expressed her greetings to the delegates for being part of this remarkable event despite feeling sick at the moment.
The district is also set to conduct a welcome night later, 6 PM, at Mercedes Church Plaza for the guests, visitors, DO personnel, district sports coordinators, and tournament managers.
With the theme "Optimizing Resilience, Maximizing Outstanding Competence," ESPAAM aims to shape young athletes with their skills and opportunities to showcase in the higher level such as on Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet (EVRAA) or even Palarong Pambansa.
Billeting Venues
Despite the challenges for Mercedes being a small town, the district together with its people made a team effort for the preparation of billeting venues such as construction of bathing areas, fixing of water pipes, and providing beddings to the delegates.
Unit I composed of Arteche, Jipapad, Oras, San Policarpo, and Maslog are housed at Mercedes National High School, both secondary and elementary.
Meanwhile, Unit II are assigned at Bobon National High School and Bobon Elementary School as their billeting venues. The unit is composed of municipalities of San Julian, Taft, Sulat, Can-Avid, and Dolores.
Unit III occupied Mercedes Central Elementary School and Evacuation Center. Delegates from Maydolong, Balangkayan, Quinapondan, Giporlos, Hernani, Llorente, and Gen. Mac billet these venues.
Municipalities of Guiuan, Salcedo, Lawaan, Balangiga, and the host, Mercedes, representing Unit IV, are housed at Anuron Elementary School and some at Reino Dearyo Function Hall located at Brgy. San Roque, Mercedes.
All out support
During the opening program, several dignitaries from the Division and Provincial Office were present to witness the ESPAAM outlook.
This was led by the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Gorgonio Diaz Jr. together with Atty. Calick Arrieta, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent (ASDS); Dr. Nicolas Baylan, CID-Chief; duly representative of SGOD-Chief Maricel Evardone, represented by Dr. Venus Questa; and Abelardo Campani, Division Sports Coordinator or EPS for Mapeh.
Meanwhile, from the Provincial Office, Cora Basadas came to the event in behalf of Congresswoman Ma. Fe Abunda. Also with her are Board Member (BM) of Eastern Samar Pol Gonzales, duly representative of Governor Ben P. Evardone; ABC President Stella Maris Libanan for 4P's Partylist Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan; and Alexis Uy, representative of Tingog Partylist Hon. Jude Acidre.
The guests inspired the young athletes by sharing their messages of support and vowed to work together to raise the Eastern Samar banner in higher meets.
Further, ESPAAM covers 23 sports events patterned from its regional counterpart, Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet.
