Start by adding a bottom color

It is important to start your ecobrick by adding a bottom color. This is part of the circular design principle of ecobricking: we’re thinking about the next use of the ecobrick. When your ecobrick is put to use in a module or an earth construction the bottom color will help make patterns and designs.

Store your ecobrick

Once complete, you will need to store your ecobricks until you have enough for you project. Store ecobricks indoors, out of the sun. If possible protect with a cloth or tarp from accumulating dust and dirt (PET attracts dust and chemicals and is hard to remove). Stack horizontally, with the ends pointed outward. This enables you to organize your ecobricks by colour and brand- which later facilitates project planning and making. It's good to have the ecobricks raised slightly above the floor - rats have been known to chew away at bottles! Ideally, ecobricks are stored off of the ground (on a floor or raised on wood) and fully protected from the sun and the elements. Ecobricks are best stacked horizontally with their bottom pointed outwards.

EcoBricks prevent plastic waste from disrupting the ecosystem: Usually, when thrown away, plastic breaks down into tiny pieces and contaminates the area where it is. EcoBricks seal the plastic away preventing the buildup of toxic gases emitted during the degradation of the plastic, such as methane.

We did not just incorporate the plastic sachets so we can call it a 'green' product. We saw a property in those laminates that complement our innovation. And this formulation makes our ecobricks five times stronger than commercial alternatives

Ecobricks look different from ordinary building blocks and resemble lego blocks. The plastic laminates also act as an insulator that locks out the heat passing through normal hollow blocks, making ecobricks cooler and more durable.

Over the past few decades, we have learned that the story of plastic doesn’t end when we throw it away. The amount of plastic that is processed, thrown away and introduced into the biosphere is harmingall creatures, both large and small. According to ‘ecobricks.org’, modern manufacturing practises have increased the production, usage and wastage of plastic over the past fifty years. This being a major source of global CO2 emissions, reducing the use and processing of plastic has never been more important.

A team of eco-warriors in Mumbai set up a dog kennel made up of ecobricks in July'21
According to the environment ministry, in the year 2019-2020, India generated 3.4 million metric tonnes of plastic waste. In the wake of such statistics and only a small volume of plastic being recycled, ecobricks can act as a resource to reuse plastic for the greater good. Eco-activists suggest that putting plastic to use by creating building materials like an ecobrick is a fairly sustainable idea.

Ecobricks are pretty simple, but there are a lot of big ideas behind them. Basically ecobricks enable enable anyone, anywhere to put the potentially problematic properties of plastic to good use. Even better than that, the manual, hands-on, and fundamentally local process of ecobricking gets us thinking. The awareness that grows puts us on a road towards to consuming and using plastic wisely.

What is an Ecobrick?
An Ecobrick is essentially a reusable building block created by solid non-biodegradable waste placed into a plastic bottle to a set density.

By packing the bottles with a set density, it makes them suitable building blocks for virtually any construction. They can also be packed with other non-biological un-recyclables that, uncontained, are toxic to the environment (i.e. styrofoam, wires, small batteries, etc.)

Eco brick may bring work to people who can't get a proper job because of some company restrictions, building an eco-bricks may help people who want sidelines and additional income, they help the environment and they're earning some income because of it.
