270 MILION COVID-19 VACCINE DOSES SECURED FOR AFRICA.
The African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) which was established by South African president through his African Union(AU) chairmanship post, has secured 270 million covid-19 provisional vaccine doses for Africa.
“…we have taken the additional steps to independently secure vaccines using our own limited resources as member states” said AU chairman Cyril Ramaphosa.
The AVATT’s effort is meant to augment the Covax facility, a Gavi Vaccine Alliance and World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative meant to assist low and middle-income countries to secure covid-19 vaccines on equitable basis. Member states can either access vaccines through an instalment provision offered by Afreximbank or pay using their internal funds.
Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca will supply vaccine doses, as 50 million vaccine doses will be available for April to June 2021.

TOUCHING A DEAD COVID-19 BODY IS BETTER THAN GATHERING FOR BURIAL.

Treasurer for Zimbabwe Association for Human Rights Doctors (ZAHDR), Norman Matara castigated the move by Zimbabwean authorities of assuring that coffins of covid-19 dead bodies should be airtight and the restriction of moving dead bodies beyond the vicinity in which death occurs, to a preferred burial site.
“The risk of transmission is more from gatherings during a burial and less likely from the dead body. Our policies should ensure compliance and restrictions of gatherings during a burial, not restricting the co**se being moved to a preferred burial site,” said Matara
According to the United States Centre for Disease Control (CDC), “there is currently no known risk associated with being in the same room at a funeral or visitation service with the body of someone who died of Covid-19,” although one “should avoid touching the body of someone who has died of Covid-19, before the body is prepared for viewing.”
