Throwback! When Imran Khan called back Kris Srikkanth following a dubious lbw decision in a Pakistan-India ODI.

The match, held in front of a packed crowd in Lahore, was a 40-over game that was reduced to 37 overs a side before play started. Batting first, Pakistan posted 150-8 with Javed Miandad top scoring with 30 off 52 balls. Manoj Prabhakar was the pick of India’s bowlers, taking 2-24 off his eight overs.

This was the final match of India’s long tour of Pakistan that featured four Test matches and four ODI’s. The Test series had been drawn 0-0 and going into the final match of the ODI series, Pakistan were 1-0 up having won the second game by seven wickets. The first and third matches had been abandoned due to rain and crowd disruption respectively.

India therefore needed to successfully chase Pakistan’s score of 150 in order to tie the series and finish their tour of Pakistan with a victory to their name.

However, their chase got off to a poor start as both Raman Lamba and Navjot Sidhu fell cheaply to leave India 18-2. For a while, Kris Srikkanth seemed to be restoring some stability to the innings as India reached 66-3. It was then that controversy struck.

Srikkanth, who played 146 ODIs for India between 1981 and 1992, was on 31 off 63 balls and on strike against Waqar Younis. Waqar bowled a length delivery that Srikkanth attempted to tuck into the leg-side only for the ball to strike his pad and trickle into the off-side.

As Pakistan appealed, Srikkanth set off for a single only to see the umpire raise his finger and adjudge him lbw. Srikkanth was aghast and immediately gestured to his bat in disbelief, certain that he had got an inside edge.

“[Srikkanth] shouldn’t be so disappointed,” mused the commentator. “He’s had his fair share of luck.”

However, as Srikkanth was walking off, Pakistan captain Imran Khan decided to call the Indian batter back in a move lauded for its sporting nature.

Having been afforded a second chance by the Pakistan captain, Srikkanth was unable to capitalise as, somewhat incredibly, he was dismissed again the very next ball. This time caught behind with no doubt surrounding the dismissal.

Srikkanth’s departure brought about an immediate collapse from the India lower middle order, as 66-4 became 82-8, any hope of an Indian victory quickly fading away.

The final wicket of the match was taken by Abdul Qadir as Pakistan sealed a 38 run victory and a 2-0 series win.

Some observations from this huge defeat:

Bowling/Fielding

- Poor Workload Management: Shaheen was slightly off his line due to him falling over slightly towards his right. This usually happens when enough strength is not being applied to hold the body more upright while keeping intensity high. Why did this happen? Very simple, the Pakistan Cricket Team is having him play EVERY game, even when it is not required in the slightest. Shaheen was NOT needed vs Nepal or Bangladesh. The recommendation here is to, for the love of the Almighty, manage workloads. This is not rocket science, England Cricket does this phenomenally well with Mark Wood. Not only does this keep bowlers fresh and injury free, but it prevents other teams from getting accustomed to playing these bowlers. Pakistan Cricket Team has HUGE fast bowling reserves which is USELESS if these guys are not being rotated and given steady chances. The PCB needs to save Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah otherwise they WILL become casualties similar to Mohammad Zahid and many other fast bowlers who were poorly managed by the PCB. Bottom line, execute a rotation policy and use your fast bowling reserves, that’s what they’re there for.

Batting:

- Strangely defensive tactics with the bat. The target was 350+ and the batters were barely going at 4 per over during the initial power play. Pakistan lost the game in the first few overs as a good start is absolutely required if a team is to successfully chase down such a large target.

- Fragile middle order. Where is Haris Sohail? Having him in the side not only fortifies Pakistans middle order (he has multiple ODI 💯’s vs Australian Men's Cricket Team), but it will also allow Pakistan the flexibility of dropping Fakhar or Imam in place of another batter or all rounder by giving Rizwan the option of opening the innings which he does so well in T20’s.

Overall a very disappointing performance by the Pakistan side but this a professional and good spirited Pakistan side with many gun players. All that is required is better management and more positivity with the bat. Best of luck to every side in the Asia Cup and may the best performers win 🏆

Possibly the only player in history to be good enough with the bat to be selected as a specialist batsman and proven enough to be considered a legendary Fast bowler alongside his apprentices Wasim and Waqar (not to mention his fitness and historic leadership skills) this man was the GOAT hands down according to Cricket Abstract.

According to Mazher Arshad, In 1980s, Imran Khan took 256 wickets in Tests at an average of 19.12 and scored 2430 runs at an average of 44.18. A GOAT Cricketer.

All these while missing many tests in his peak years due to injury. Also, he didn’t bowl in many of these tests due to injury and purely played as a Batsman otherwise he could have taken even more wickets.
