The history of the Samovar, a device used for brewing tea, is diasporic and hyphenated. Though the etymology of the word samovar is Russian (self-brewer), samovar-like pottery was found in Azerbaijan dating back 3,600 years. Pocket Samovar magazine begins from this hyphenated, dislocated, and diasporic context of Eurasian and/or post-Soviet writing and literary community. Whether we feature work that has ties to Central Asia, the Slavic language and/or post-Soviet experience, we are interested in the retelling and re-configuration of memories and identities that can occur over a cup of tea.
Pocket Samovar originated in 2019 when two Jack Kerouac School creative writing students, Kate from Yalta, and Konstantin from Zaoksky, Russia, spoke of the post-Soviet experience and culture that haunted them. National borders assaulted their autobiographies and they were animated by remembering and re-imagining diaspora, especially the forgotten and underrepresented: poetry, short stories, essays, and creative nonfiction from transcaucasian, baltic, eastern european, central asian, north caucasian, indigenous, neopagan, differently-abled, Jewish, lgbtq, women, muslim writers and poets.
