‘Archaeology Up Close’ at the Treasure House in Beverley on Friday, 28 October

To support the new archaeology exhibition in the Treasure House, Treasure! Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds, an event will take place on Friday, 28 October from 11am to 3pm in the Treasure House Education Room
Archaeology Up Close is for anybody who loves archaeology - they can pop in and discover more about finds in this area. Finds Liaison Officers from the Portable Antiquities Scheme will be on hand to chat about their work, which includes managing a database of over 1,500,000 pieces of archaeology!
Sally Hayes, Treasure House curator, said : “If you have small archaeological finds, why not bring them along to the event? East Riding Museums will be sharing unusual archaeology and some of the hundreds of coins in the collection - can you match the heads, tails and dates in our coins quiz?”
There is no need to book for the event, which is suitable for all ages.
The exhibition, Treasure! Hidden Hoards and Fabulous Finds, runs until 4 February, 2023.
There are thousands of treasured items in the Treasure House but some objects are quite literally….treasure. The exhibition showcases objects that are defined as treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 and explores this fascinating aspect of archaeology.
The exhibition is a chance to discover Viking gold rings, a pendant with Roman mosaic and an Anglo-Saxon gold pommel (part of a sword handle). There is also some more unusual treasure, such as a pile of 13th century silver coins found near Huggate that have been fused together, and bits of Bronze Age metalworking waste found near Bishop Burton. Under the Treasure Act 1996, even off-cuts of metal can sometimes be classed as treasure.

EAST RIDING DEBUT FOR
MARTY CRAGGS’ NEW BAND!
Cherry Burton Arts have been offered a show by one of the best kept secrets in the North East - MARTY CRAGGS’ LITTLE BAND JAM at The Village Hall, CHERRY BURTON, near Beverley on SATURDAY 29 OCTOBER at 8pm.
Ex Lindisfarne and Happy Cats member Marty will bring his new line-up to the village simply because he loves playing there -he is no stranger to this area. The band already has quite a reputation close to home with their infectious mixture of songs from both Happy Cats and Lindisfarne catalogues, and a whole bunch of well-known songs including a ‘drop of the Irish’ that make for a fantastic evening. Bass player Michael Bailey has also performed at the hall backing Lonnie Donegan’s son Peter -and he too “ cannot wait to gan back” joined by guitarist Dave Whiffin and Steve Dolder on drums.


Marty is also a fine songwriter, having honed his craft alongside some of the best in the business during his 16 years with Lindisfarne. His songs were featured on their albums such as ‘Amigos’ and ‘Here Comes the Neighbourhood’ including collaborations with the late Alan Hull. Despite being a fine writer, Craggs isn’t afraid to take on some of the finest popular songs written by others, and a show from his ‘Little Band Jam’ is crammed full of crowd-pleasing favourites, described as a ‘cracking night out with friends’ with some of the best music around.

Cherry Burton Arts organiser Martin Peirson added “This band just make you feel good from the first note- they have a brilliant collection of songs. We’ve been trying to get them down here for a while, and finally fixed a date-but well worth the wait. There are some great musicians in the line-up-Marty is best known for some fine sax playing- but can turn his hand to anything -harmonica, flute, whistle- and he’s a great singer too!”

Beverley Minster Vintage & Retro Fair is on this Saturday from 10am to 4pm - raising funds for the Minster - with over 80 traders selling an eclectic mix of vintage, retro and handmade items including: homewares, records, toys, furniture, vintage clothing, art, collectibles, film posters, bric-a-brac and much more. There is live music performances and dancing throughout the day as well as a pop up cafe.

Easter Storytimes and Bounce and Rhyme sessions in East Riding Libraries: Great Big Easter Egg Hunt
East Riding Libraries will be hosting fun events and activities this Easter from 11 – 22 April.

For younger children aged 3 and under there are ‘Bounce and Rhyme’ sessions whilst for children aged four to eight many libraries will also be running ‘Peter Rabbit: The Great Big Easter Egg Hunt’. Both will be an opportunity to come along and enjoy the story, take part in fun activities, and try and find all the Easter Egg pictures hidden around the library.

Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets, said: “Our East Riding Libraries Easter events are always popular, and are a great way for families with children to enjoy the school holidays. It’s great that we are able to put on such a wide range of events again this year!”

All the events and sessions are free of charge but booking in advance is needed at some locations.
