Happy Female Filmmaker Friday, friends! You know her, you love her - this week's spotlight is on French filmmaker Agnès Varda. She was a pioneer of French New Wave Cinema, a genre dominated by men in the 60s. Through documentary realism and an experimental style, Varda's films provide social commentary and address a host of feminist issues.
She has received an honorary Palm d'Or, an Academy Honorary Award and a Golden Lion, among other accolades and nominations. Many of her films, both documentaries and features, focus on protagonists from marginalized groups. Varda described her own style as "cinécriture" or "cinematic writing" and came from a background in photography, lending to her visual style.
