Peer Recovery and Resiliency Symposium, October 22nd, 23rd, Canmore Alberta
Meet the Speakers - Marissa Rose

I was recently a guest on Marissa’s show, The Paramedic Podcast, but that’s not where we first met; It’s an unlikely and funny story that I’ll share when I introduce her at our conference in October. Marissa has converted her trauma into an amazing outlet for recovery and post-traumatic growth. Australia is a few steps ahead of us here in North America in destigmatizing post-traumatic stress. Marissa isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions as she has the experience and education to back the information she shares. I’m happy she has agreed to come to Canada to speak about her experiences of post-traumatic growth and the neuroscience behind recovery. We’re almost 50% sold out, and tickets are going fast. So grab your tickets while you can.

Marissa is a Registered Advanced Care Paramedic II and has worked as a paramedic in Australia for 9 years. Marissa holds a Bachelor of Paramedic Science, a Masters in Critical Care Paramedicine and is now studying her Masters in Neuroscience. Marissa also teaches the Bachelor of Paramedic Science at Griffith University in Queensland. In 2021, Marissa founded The Paramedic Podcast, which aims to tackle the side of paramedicine people don't often talk about; mental health, to promote conversations and support paramedics and frontline workers worldwide. Marissa also completed her masters thesis on the benefits of equine therapy in the management of PTSD, anxiety and depression in frontline workers. Marissa is passionate about sharing her story of struggle to triumph, where she details intimately the story of her traumatic childhood, how that led her to become a paramedic, and how the career she chose resulted in her experiencing PTSD and post traumatic growth. https://marissarose.com.au/

This post is to get you questioning evidence based practices and research.

Whilst we know that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is efficacious and has been supported through evidence based medicine for some time, contemporary (and older) literature has questioned its methods.

As clinicians and humans, it is important we remain inquisitive and search for contemporary evidence based practice, as we all know, studies that question, challenge, support and encourage are endless and we must inform ourselves through current, relevant, reputable sources what treatment modalities are out there and their associated outcomes.

I do not believe in a “one size fits all approach”, and neither should you. I believe CBT is effective, but not without limitations, as with everything. So I challenge you to think, question, inform and ponder, what is the best option for you? Is it one, is it many? Is it a combination? Is it evolving?

Some great articles here to read. Once the website is up and running I will upload interesting reads there so you can stay informed.

To my Facebook network, I am currently undertaking some research for Episode 12 of The Paramedic Podcast. I am a paramedic, developing neuroscientist and researcher looking to make the lives and mental health of frontline workers better.

The aim of this survey is to gain information and insights relating to leaving your service, it is targeted at frontline workers such as paramedics, emergency call takers, police, firefighters, army personnel and frontline hospital staff (ED doctors/nurses etc) who have exited their role. All information gathered will remain anonymous and help drive discussion on the next podcast where I will discuss these important issues. The main aim is to seek commonalities to be addressed and understood relating to this complex issue and later have some experts in the field unpack these for further discussion. On this episode I will be joined by fellow firefighter/paramedic, artist, keynote speaker and mental health advocate Dansun Photos to discuss his experiences and our findings.

The quiz will take 3-10 minutes depending on the length of your answers. If you fit into this category, or know someone who does, please share this link so I can collect as much data as possible. This is not limited to Australia only, this is a global assessment.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to sharing the results and having a really insightful discussion on the next podcast!

- Environmental Baselining – how to accurately assess crowd dynamics.

- Re-thinking fear/anxiety/worry – using nonverbal communication to re-centre and process trigger environments.

- Nonverbal Communication and Precursors to Violence

- Warning signs

- Identifying threat behaviours and how to avoid those displaying them

- How to effectively disengage

Do you have any questions you would like Matthew to answer? If so, comment them below and I will integrate them into the podcast!

Episode 8 dropping 8am this Friday!

A really exciting and insightful episode for students wishing to get some inside tips on being an effective and successful student both during placement and their graduate internship.

No one shift on board an ambulance is ever the same and paramedics may face a myriad of emotions within their 12 hour shift.

An unpredictable work environment means unpredictable jobs confronting paramedics both physically, emotionally, intellectually and psychologically in positive and negative ways.

No one shift will ever be the same and it’s extremely important to acknowledge our emotions, both the good and the bad so we can process them in positive ways that lead to our growth.

The abnormal becomes the normal and exposure to many different scenes, people and incidents can result in many different emotions and feelings within us. This is normal. This is okay. Emotions are a healthy way for our conscious and subconscious mind to process events. What is crucial is that we as paramedics individually and collectively support each other in positively managing these emotions to facilitate our growth.

Our role is vital to our community, but our mental health is a priority. What a beautiful job we have, with experiences that can help us truly appreciate each other and our lives resulting in our growth to become better people and ultimately more wholesome and holistic paramedics.

Very exciting to collaborate with DonateLife on such an important topic very close to my heart.

A great listen and an important reminder to discuss your organ donation wishes with your family today.

The parents of young liver recipient Thomas Hollowell and DonateLife Queensland State Manager and Nursing Director, Tina Coco, feature in the recently released Episode 7 of The Paramedic Podcast.

The Hollowell’s discuss their journey with a sick child in desperate need of a liver donation and how organ donation transformed his young life, while Tina discusses all things organ donation.

The Paramedic Podcast has taken a strong interest in organ donation following the death of young organ donor, Flynn in Queensland, the son of a paramedic who told his story in an earlier podcast.

𝐖𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

Working in an industry where each day we face things that are abnormal, it’s easy to forget that we begin to exist in a “parallel universe”. What I mean by this is that what we see at work is often just that, abnormal and returning to civilian life can be difficult.

We begin to perceive things differently, interpret situations differently and live in a new hyper aroused state as this is what we need to do within our workplace to be effective clinicians…to perform within the chaos and find a way to manage it.

Unfortunately, this new state of operation can leave us feeling disconnected…as if we are living in an alternate universe where we see the world differently. This can then effect how we interact with our world and the people within it. However, this doesn’t always have to be such a bad thing…it can allow us to become more empathetic, understanding and compassionate but we must start this process with ourselves first.

Remember: you are not alone in this. We all experience this. It is normal, we do this to survive. Be kind to yourself and always know, we walk together, never alone.

As Paramedics, we have self selected into a role that requires us to put everyone before ourselves. We are selfless, often to a fault.

While the role we play is so important, we can’t discredit or disvalue the need to take care of ourselves. Often this can be the most difficult part of our job but is vital in ensuring we are fit for duty.

We need to remember that being operationally fit isn’t just about our readiness to work, but also our ability to self care and ensure our mental health and emotional well-being is a priority.

What are some things that you do to ensure your cup doesn’t get too full?
