For Professor Kim Ati Wagner? Well... we toyed with the redemptive narrative arc but that would exclude quite a lot 🤣

Hannah suggested manly tears so we went with that!

America's secret war in the Caribbean during the Cold War is revealed as never before in this riveting story of the machinations and blunders of superpowers, and the daring of the mavericks who took them on.

During the presidencies of Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson, the Caribbean was in crisis, while the United States and the USSR acted out the world's rising tensions in its island nations.

Meanwhile the leaders of these nations - the charismatic Fidel Castro, and his mysterious brother Raul; the ideologue Che Guevara; the capricious psychopath Rafael Trujillo; and Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, a buttoned-down doctor with interests in Vodou, embezzlement and torture - had ambitions of their own.

Alex von Tunzelmann's brilliant narrative follows these five rivals and accomplices from the beginning of the Cold War to its end. The superpowers thought they could use these Caribbean leaders as puppets, but what neither bargained on was that their puppets would come to life.

The United States, in its all-consuming fight against communism, stumbled into one disaster after another. First, with the Bay of Pigs, and then with the Cuban Missile Crisis, it helped bring the world as close to catastrophic nuclear war as it has ever been.

RED HEAT is an authoritative and eye-opening account of a wildly dramatic and dangerous era of international politics that has unmistakable resonance today.

The stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947 liberated 400 million Indians from the British Empire.

One of the defining moments of world history had been brought about by a tiny number of people, including;

• Jawaharlal Nehru, the fiery prime minister-to-be
• Gandhi, the mystical figure who enthralled a nation
• Louis and Edwina Mountbatten, the glamorous but unlikely couple who had been dispatched to get Britain out of India without delay.

Within hours of the midnight chimes, however, the two new nations of India and Pakistan would descend into anarchy and terror.

INDIAN SUMMER depicts the epic sweep of events that ripped apart the greatest empire the world has ever seen, and reveals the secrets of the most powerful players on the world stage: the Cold War conspiracies, the private deals, and the intense and clandestine love affair between the wife of the last viceroy and the first prime minister of free India.

With wit, insight and a sharp eye for detail, relates how a handful of people changed the world for ever.

This week, we’ve been revisiting the 2013 film, Belle.

This movie was inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, played by , the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay, played by Matthew Goode.

Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, played by Tom Wilkinson, and his wife, played by Emily Watson, Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.

Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on change, who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

The film also features as James Ashford and as Oliver Ashford 🤩

chose the film for our club library and our very own has written a wonderful review for her Reel History column with !
