As Jesus approached Jericho on the way to Jerusalem, Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside begging. Because of his cirucumstances, he was probably considered to be an outcast and overlooked by many. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Despite his circumstances and his surroundings, even when things appeared to be dark, he placed his eyes on Jesus.
Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God. It may look like he was set aside but he was set apart. His vision was darkness but because of his persistence and faith in Jesus, he saw the Light!!
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” ~ 1 Timothy 6:12
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony” ~Revelation 12:11
Lord, Your word tells us, to come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive Your mercy and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Thank you, Lord, for stopping when You hear us calling out to You. Thank you for drawing us closer to You as You listen to what we have to say and thank you that You care so deeply for us that You ask us what we want You to do for us. No matter what circumstances are happening around us or around those that we love, we trust You. We can rest knowing that you are holding onto us. Lord, we love you. It’s in Jesus’ name that we pray. Amen
