“Let me at least set up an account in your name. You will have complete control and can do with it as you see fit. You can even donate it to a charity if you want.” Curtis stared at her sheepishly.

“You aren’t going to give up, are you?” Kristi sat back in the chair. “Fine. I’ll send you the information on where to transfer the money.”

Curtis sat back and smiled. He had won.

Curtis’s mouth dropped open as Kristi picked up her iced tea and took a long drink.

She was a strong woman who could take care of herself. Maybe he didn’t win after all? Maybe, just maybe, he had fallen under her spell and she was calling the shots.

“Don’t blame yourself.” She reached out and touched his arm.

“It is my fault!” he shouted as he pulled his arm away. “I am supposed to protect you. I failed. Once again, I failed.”

Kaylee stood and watched him.

“I gave him the perfect alibi. Dinner with the serial killer husband while he goes after the wife and child. How could I be so stupid?”

“It will be okay.” She wrapped her arms around his waist. “As long as we have each other.”

He pulled her hand towards his mouth and kissed it gently. “We better get Stephanie’s room cleaned up. I think you made quite the mess in there.”

“And we clean up our messes together, remember?”

“Always.”

He watched from the shadows behind the bushes as she came out and spoke to the man as he dropped off the car. He was familiar with the house from when his sister would speak of it so many years ago. He knew the property; he had been there so many times.

That should have been his niece in that yard. Rage boiled in his blood. She would have been a teenager now. He wondered if she would have had his sister’s eyes.

Everything was still. He knew Kaylee had gone upstairs. Now would be the perfect time.

He glanced down at the blood that dripped from the rabbit in his hand as he approached the back door. He slowly turned the k**b and silently moved towards the basement door as he let the blood drip and create the path for her to follow. Like lambs to the slaughter. He knew she couldn’t resist following the breadcrumbs, even if they were covered in blood.

From the trees that edged the property, a pair of eyes peered out as the tractor pulled out of the barn. The wagon followed behind carrying his family across the field.

“Out for a hayride,” a voice said. “Probably in search of the baby cow. They are in for a surprise.” Laughter echoed through the trees.

He had been watching them for months; Curtis even longer. He was always fascinated by his history.

He walked back through the woods. There was no need to see their reaction. He would find out soon enough.

As Curtis drove the tractor across the field, Kaylee sat in the back making hand gestures of spiders climbing up waterspouts as they sang Stephanie’s favorite nursery rhyme. She loved the innocence that Stephanie brought to their family. It made the darkness more bearable.
