Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, has identified Liverpool duo, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, among the world’s best players.

Salah and Mane have had a terrific campaign with Liverpool, individually as well as collectively, and are among the favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or too.

The Egyptian has scored 31 goals and made 16 assists from 50 games in all competitions in the 2021-22 season, while Mane has netted 23 goals and registered five assists from as many games.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Mendy said (via Liverpool Echo): “When you see African players, people like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who really play at the highest possible level, then we talk about the best world players not just the best African players.”

He added: “I think this is what we need to focus on. They are true examples, and role models and give hope to young people, making them desire to work and exceed the limits to achieve one goal. This is how football has impacted on a social level in all countries around the world.”

Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, has told Chelsea to buy a replacement for their injury-prone midfielder, N’Golo Kante, this summer.

Kante has produced numerous first-class performances for Chelsea since moving to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in 2016.

The France World Cup winner missed 16 games in the 2021-21 season due to various injuries (groin, knee, and unknown) and COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

But Wright believes that Chelsea needs to replace the injury-prone star sooner rather than later, adding that their form as a team has dropped.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (via The Express), Wright said: “What is going to happen with Chelsea next season? Without an owner who used to just write off £100 million every year. Is the new owner (Todd Boehly) going to be able to do that? Because that is how they have been able to do what they have been doing.”

He added: “How is that going to happen now? They need defenders, they are going to need defenders. Kante’s starting to get a little bit of injuries, so they are going to need to replace him. What is happening with [Romelu] Lukaku?”

“It’s just crazy what is happening at Chelsea. I can’t really put my finger on it deep down. But form’s gone, you see some of the games they have had, they have been so poor in the games.”

Manchester United legend, Gary Neville, has named three Red Devils players that have suffered since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival last summer.

Ronaldo returned to Man United in August 2021 from Juventus, expecting that he will lead United to the Premier League title in the recently concluded season.

However, it was a terrible season for Man United, as they finished sixth in the table.

Ronaldo scored 24 goals for United, but the performance levels of the rest of the team dropped significantly.

The squad, which finished second in the 2020-21 season, dropped four places despite signing the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Ronaldo.

And mentioning three players who have been negatively impacted by Ronaldo’s arrival, Neville said on Overlap: “I think at the start of the season, he created a problem straight away with (Edinson) Cavani. [He was] being pleaded to stay and lead the attack for the year, but when they signed Ronaldo, Cavani was shot then and finished.”

He added, “It upset the dynamic in the dressing room for Bruno (Fernandes). I think Bruno looks up to him like a godfather in Portugal so it made him feel a bit inferior to what he was before.”

“It made Maguire a little bit inferior as captain just naturally – nothing from Ronaldo’s doing this. Just his presence itself on the pitch means everyone’s looking to Cristiano with Harry trying to establish himself as Manchester United captain.”

Real Madrid defender, Dani Carvajal, has sent a strong message to Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe, telling the France international that there are some trains that only pass once.

Carvajal said this while reacting to Mbappe’s Real Madrid snub.

Recall that Mbappe shunned a move to Real Madrid, deciding to stay at PSG, a decision that left a salty taste in the mouths of many in Los Blancos.

Mbappe had looked set to join Real Madrid this summer when his contract with PSG expired.

But the 23-year-old decided to stay at PSG, signing a new three-year deal a few days ago.

His new contract at PSG will keep him at Le Parc des Princes until 2025.

However, Carvajal was not happy with Mbapp’s decision but insisted that he is France’s best player, adding that it would be difficult for him to get out of his comfort zone.

“You have to be in his head. He is French and from Paris. He is playing for PSG, he is the best player for his country, and it must be very difficult to get out of that comfort zone,” Carvajal told ABC.

“But I insist, there are trains that only pass once and [Real] Madrid is above any player.”

26/05/2022

Former Real Madrid midfielder, Nuri Sahin has reminded the Spanish side’s challengers in this season’s final, Liverpool, that Los Blancos never lost a final game in the competition before.

Since the completion was changed from European Cup to the Champions League in 1992, the Spanish giants have in fact won every final they’ve been in.

They have taken home seven of their 13 titles in that time.

Sahin, who also played for Liverpool, however, said that both teams have an equal chance in the Champions League final.

Sahin, who is now a manager in Turkey believes both teams’ coaches have the winning pedigree that is crucial in finals.

“Both clubs and teams, they have all the reason to be confident because they are playing very good,” Sahin told talkSPORT

“They have two outstanding managers, two historical clubs, with final history also.

“It’s important because if you played some finals, you already smell the air there and you know how it feels when you’re there.

“This will help both of them. I just read a few days ago that Real Madrid never lost the Champions League final.

Real Madrid defender, Dani Carvajal, has issued a firm response to Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah regarding his ‘revenge’ comments on the Champions League final.

Salah limped off injured in the 2018 showpiece against Real Madrid, which the Los Blancos won 3-1 after a strong tackle from Sergio Ramos.

The Egyptian captain has openly spoken about his desire to set the record straight when the sides meet again on Saturday in Paris.

But Carvajal told ABC he hoped Liverpool losing another final against them would not be too much of a ‘burden’ for Salah.

The Spaniard said: “I don’t know if Salah or Liverpool are in the mood for revenge.

“It is true that when you lose a Champions League final, you always want to have a second chance against that same team in order to beat them.

“Let’s hope it’s not an important burden for Salah to lose a second Champions League final against Real Madrid.”

Super Falcons safe hands, Chiamaka Nnadozie has scooped the best goalkeeper award in the French Ligue.

The Bruno Martini award for Goalkeeping Revelation of the year is sponsored by the French Association of Professional Football Goalkeeper Coaches (AEGB).

The 21-year-old beat Mylene Chavas of Girondis Bordeaux, Olympique Lyon’s Christiane Endler, GPSO 92 ISSY’s Cosette Morche and Barbora Votikova of Paris Saint-Germain to the individual accolade.

She kept 13 clean sheets in 19 league appearances for Paris FC in the French top-flight.

The goalie’s exploits also helped her club, Paris FC, qualify for next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.

”I want to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to the AEGB Football Association France, for this great award. A special thanks to Paris FV, you guys made it possible,” she said after receiving the award.

Nnadozie linked up with Paris FC from Nigerian outfit Rivers Angels in 2020 and has made 34 league appearances for the club.

She is the youngest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a feat achieved against Korea in France in 2019, aged 18 and 186 days.

The Super Falcons won the game by 2-0.

Chelsea are close to completing their first signing of the summer transfer window.

According to transfer guru Andreas Korssund, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is closing in on a move to Chelsea this summer.

Chelsea will conclude talks with Sevilla in the coming days after the UK Government finally approved the sale of the West London club to Todd Boehly’s consortium on Wednesday.

The report added that the Blues are ready to pay the required fee for Kounde’s signature.

It is believed that Kounde has already agreed personal terms and he is only waiting for Chelsea to finalise an agreement with Sevilla.

Kounde featured 32 times for Sevilla in La Liga this season.

He played a significant role in the Spanish giants retaining the best defensive record in the league, with his impressive displays attracting Chelsea.

It is no secret that Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will need to bolster his defensive position this summer in a bid to replace the departing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Meanwhile, providing an update on Kounde, football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, wrote on Twitter, “Koundé has been top of the list for Chelsea for months. He’s considered serious option and the player would love a Premier League move. Release clause: €80m.”

“Chelsea will push to sign Koundé, working on it since long time… plan hasn’t changed.”

West Ham United captain, Declan Rice, has opted to remain at the London Stadium for at least another season amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea, according to The Mirror.

The Mirror added that it was Rice’s “final decision” on his future and he will not leave the Hammers, despite interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea.

It is believed to be a decision that suits all parties.

West Ham are determined to keep Rice for another season, even though the England international has refused to sign a contract extension.

Rice will have two years remaining on his current deal with West Ham next summer.

However, West Ham will still be able to demand a sizable fee even if the 23-year-old doesn’t commit his long-term future to the club before then.

The Portuguese government has approved Roman Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea FC to the Todd Boehly consortium.

Abramovich was sanctioned and his assets frozen by the United Kingdom government.

The Russian oligarch then put the Stamford Bridge outfit for sale in early March following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The deal, worth more than $5 billion, will see an ownership group led by Todd Boehly take control.

Abramovich has Portuguese citizenship and, due to sanctions, Lisbon was required to approve the sale of the West London club.

“Portuguese authorization is a result of the guarantee given by British authorities that proceeds from the sale will be used for humanitarian ends, without benefiting directly or indirectly the club owner, which is on the European Union sanctions list,” the government said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

“The national position has the assent of the European Union,” the Portuguese executive added.

The FCT Police Command says it has designed a robust security arrangement defined by a generous deployment of officers across the city ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary Elections.

CHIBEST recalls that the primary elections had been scheduled to hold on May 28 and 29 at the MOSHOOD Abiola National Stadium Abuja.

As expected, the event would be characterized by a high influx of people, particularly party stakeholders, into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to participate in the election.

A statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, said the deployment prioritizes the protection of lives and properties of all residents during and after the exercise.

She said the Command would be enforcing the “maintenance of clear road access, robust stop and search at strategic points around the suburbs and city centre, effective crowd control, and intelligence”.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Babaji Sunday while briefing the Divisional Police Officers, heads of the various Tactical and Intelligence Units of the Command scheduled for the operation, charged them to be on top of their games, discharging their duties with the utmost respect for Fundamental Human Rights and by standard best practices.

He also tasked residents of the territory to go about the discharge of their lawful duties without the fear of harassment or molestation of any kind from any quarters.

“To adequately complement the crime-fighting effort of the Command within and beyond this period, the good people of the FCT are therefore urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or abnormal occurrence to the Police.

A presidential aspirant under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Olufemi Ajadi, has withdrawn from the 2023 race, to support the former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Ajadi, at a press conference he addressed at the NUJ secretariat, Okelewo, Abeokuta, said he has stepped down to be the running mate of Kwakwanso, who is also eyeing the presidential seat.

The entrepreneur said: “Ladies and gentlemen, I Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, having considered many things, and in the interest of our great party and beloved country, today, relinquish my presidential ambition, to support the presidential candidacy of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.”

The aspirant said this was done in the interest of the party and the nation, saying, “Senator Kwakwanso is a great Nigerian, an accomplished politician and administrator who will lift this country.”

Speaking about the state of the nation, Ajadi regretted that nothing was working well in the nation.

“Nigeria is a country that God Himself has blessed, but look around you today, you will agree with me that things are not working well.

“There is hunger in the land, despite Nigeria having arable land and varieties of foods and crops.

“There is insecurity in the country, despite an elected government, with the police, the Army, the Navy and the Air force

“Our children finish school and there are no jobs. Is it a wonder that there is crime everywhere? Roads are in terrible condition. There is no public water supply, no electricity and all the basic necessities of life. But we have a government. We have billions of Naira in cash and assets. I now ask, What is the missing link?

“Distinguished Nigerians, the missing link is selfless, sincere, and servant-based leadership, guided by the highest sense of equity and fairness. That is what we in the NNPP have come to offer,” he explained.

Three governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State have lamented that the party’s governorship primary election was full of irregularities.

The aspirants Ibrahim Shehu popularly known as Shehu Bakaoye, Wadatau Madawaki and Hafiz Nahuche, said they withdrew from the race due to irregularities that compounded the primaries.

In a joint press briefing in Gusau, the State capital, the trio alleged that they observed some irregularities in the conduct of the primaries which they said forced them to withdraw and seek redress through an appropriate authority.

They said they would take their case to the national headquarters of the party for a redress.

The Coalition for Peter Obi has applauded the former governor of Anambra State for his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), saying the party will lose over 15 million votes in the presidential election in 2023.

Peter Obi, a presidential aspirant, formerly on the platform of the PDP announced his resignation from the party a few days before the primary election.

The groups in a statement issued by Marcel Ngogbehei, Chairman of the Coalition said, the official announcement of Peter Obi’s exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pushed the former governor to form an alliance with credible Nigerians.

The Coalition alleged that transactional politics was going on in PDP ahead of the presidential election, a situation that is unacceptable to Mr Peter Obi, hence, the need for him to quit, the statement said.

“We are delighted that the former governor of Anambra, Mr Peter Obi listened to the request of his 23 support groups to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following the shenanigans going on inside the party ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

“With the recent development, it is obvious that PDP has automatically lost 15 million votes because of Peter Obi’s decision to dump the party.

“We, therefore, urge Mr Peter Obi to look for Nigerians of like minds and vie to be president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the forthcoming 2023 general elections .”

Gov. Muhammad Yahaya of Gombe State has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election held on Thursday.

He polled 563 votes through voice affirmation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that seven delegates could not make it to the venue of the election.

Announcing the result, Dr Danjuma Dabo, the Chief Returning Officer said 563 delegates were accredited out of the 570 persons expected to vote.

In his acceptance speech, Gov. Yahaya thanked the delegates for finding him worthy to be the party’s flag-bearer for the 2023 governorship election.

He called on party stakeholders to work together to deliver the state to the APC at the 2023 elections, adding that: “our performance will speak for us; so there is no shaking.”

The governor commended President Muhammadu Buhari, leader of the party, for “standing firm and for providing good leadership in Nigeria in this hard time that there is indeed a global challenge’’.

Yahaya also thanked members of his team for supporting and working hard to produce results that had convinced the people of Gombe State.

He assured that the confidence reposed on him through the voice affirmation would spur him to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.

Governor Yahaya will contest the 2023 governorship election against Jibrin Barde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Barde won his party’s flag on Wednesday when he polled 160 votes to defeat his closest rival, Jamil Gwamna, who scored 119 votes.

Recalls that Arinola’s younger brother, Hakeem Lawal, also won the Social Democratic Party’s governorship ticket at the primary election of the party held on Wednesday in Ilorin.

Hakeem beat his rivals with 33 votes to emerge the winner of the contest.

There was a heavy presence of security operatives on Thursday, at the venue of the special state congress of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The party is set to select its governorship candidate for the 2023 general election in Lagos State at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos State.

Patrol vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers were stationed at the access roads leading to the venue while the officers were strategically positioned at various entrances and within the premises of the venue.

NAN reports that the special state congress had started with accreditation of ad hoc delegates from the 20 Local Government Areas of the state as of the time of this report.

Members of the electoral committee for the primaries were around and delegates were moving around, expecting voting to begin.

Speaking to NAN, Mr Ademola Sadiq, the Chairman of the Accreditation Sub-Committee for the Governorship Primary Support Committee, said he was impressed by the peaceful and smooth accreditation ahead of the election.

“The accreditation has been so well organised and some local government ad hoc delegates are only expecting two or delegates to be completely cleared.

“On the whole, we are 1,225 delegates. Hopefully, by my estimation, we have attended to about 800 people so we are expecting just a few right now.

“In another 20 minutes we should be done with accreditation,” Sadiq said.

He also expressed hope that the exercise would be successful.

“I am expecting outstanding success in the primaries. We are lucky because the number of delegates has been pruned down because of the non-signing of the Electoral Act amendment (by President Buhari Muhammadu).

“We just have 1225, so, within two hours, all of them should be able to vote and we disperse,” the chairman told NAN.

NAN reports that apart from the incumbent, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is seeking a reelection ticket, two other aspirants in the race were former Commissioners in the state, Wale Oluwo and AbdulAhmed Mustapha.

At least three out of the 13 delegates from Mariga Local government Areas of Niger State for the governorship primaries have been allegedly killed by bandits.

CHIBEST learnt that the incident occurred between Mariga and Tegina and the three persons were shot dead on the spot in an ambush by the Bandits on Wednesday.

They were killed on their way back to Mariga after the party postponed the primaries to obtain their means of identification, following a protest by some of the aspirants who were not comfortable with the delegates list.

Against this backdrop, delegates were asked to return home and bring their means of identification and the primaries shifted to Thursday.

The victims were two women and a male, whose identities were not revealed.

The Chairman of the State electoral panel and Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State Mr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo who made the disclosure at the state party secretariat described the incident as sad.

Ewhrudjakpo also asked all the aspirants for the replacement of the three deceased delegates, which they agreed to after a brief discussion.

He afterwards, ordered a minute of silence be observed for the deceaseds’.

26/05/2022

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, reserved its judgment in a suit instituted by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami against the National Assembly.

The suit is seeking to void section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, 2022 on the grounds that it is in conflict with a provision in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

A seven-man full panel of the Justices of the Apex court led by Justice Muhammad Musa Dattijo reserved judgment after it heard arguments from all the parties.

Though the National Assembly was originally cited as sole Respondent in the matter, Rivers State, through the Speaker of its House of Assembly and its Attorney-General, applied and were joined as interested parties in the matter.

The applicants, through their team of lawyers led by Mr. Emmanuel Ukala, SAN, told the court that they were opposed to the suit marked SC/CV/504/2022.

Likewise, counsel to the National Assembly, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, also sought the dismissal of the suit, accusing both President Buhari and Malami of abusing the judicial process.

The respondents argued that President Buhari, having assented to the Electoral Act, could not turn back to challenge its provisions in court.

More so, they contended that only the political appointees whose rights may be infringed upon by the said provision of the Electoral Act could institute an action at the Federal High Court to challenge it.

On its part, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, brought an application to be allowed into the case as amicus curiae (friend of the court).

The legal body, which said it was before the court to represent Nigerian citizens, prayed the Supreme Court to dismiss the suit in the interest of the public.

“It is our submission that there is no conflict between section 84(12) and any other section of the Electoral Act, the 1999 Constitution, as amended, or the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

“Your lordships should take note of the ill the said section is meant to cure. The essence of the section is to provide a level playing field for all Nigerians, such that political appointees should not use their office to advance their personal interests”, counsel for the NBA, Mr. Charles Mekunye, SAN, submitted.

After it had listened to all the sides, the apex court panel said it would communicate the judgment date to the parties.

It will be recalled that Buhari and Malami had approached the Supreme Court, insisting that section 84(12) of the Electoral (Amendment) Act, 2022, is inconsistent with the provisions of sections 42, 65, 66, 106, 107, 131, 137, 147, 151, 177, 182, 192 and 196 of the constitution as well Article 2 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

They are, among others, seeking, “a declaration that the joint and or combined reading of Section 65, 66, 106, 107, 131, 137, 147, 151, 177, 182, 192 and 196 of the Constitution, the provision of Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act, 2022 which also ignores Section 84(3) of the same Act, is an additional qualifying and/or disqualifying factors for the National Assembly, House of Assembly, Gubernatorial and Presidential elections as enshrined in the said constitution, hence unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void”.

“A declaration that having regard to the clear provision of section 1(3) of the Constitution read together with section 4 of the same Constitution, the legislative powers vested in the defendant do not permit or empower it to make any other law prescribing additional qualifying/disqualifying grounds for election to the national assembly, house of assembly, gubernatorial and presidential election outside the express constitutional qualification and disqualification provisions as already provided in each or all of sections 65, 66, 106, 107, 131, 137, 147, 151, 177, 182, 192 and 196 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and without amendment to any of those sections is for the reason of inconsistency, unconstitutional and therefore null and void.

As well as, “An order nullifying the provision of Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act, 2022 by application of the blue-pencil rule, for being unconstitutional, illegal, null and void and having been made in excess of the legislative powers of the defendant as enshrined in section 4 of the constitution (as amended).”

26/05/2022

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing or accepting ad-hoc delegates produced by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Edo State.

The court declared the Ad-hoc delegates produced by Dan Orbih’s faction of the party as authentic and must be recognized and accepted.

Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by 581 delegates elected on April 30th, Justice Inyang Ekwo held that PDP and other defendants in the suit are bound by Section 84 (5) of the Electoral Act 2022 as well as Section 15 of the PDP Constitution relating to delegates elections.

The 581 delegates instituted the suit marked FHC/Abj/ CS/598/2022 through their five representatives, Monday Osagie, Reuben Ekhosuehi, Adeyanba Osaro, Magdalene Osawe and Imariabe Oghogho.

Defendants in the suit are the PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature and INEC as the 1st to 5th defendants, respectively.

The Plaintiffs in their suit, argued by Dr. John Musa, SAN had asked the court to determine whether the PDP, in view of Section 84 (5) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Section 15 of the PDP constitution, can jettison their election monitored by INEC for another one conducted in violation of the provisions of the relevant laws.

They also asked the court to determine whether the defendants can on their own, jettison the authentic delegates for others whose purported election is unknown to any law.

In his judgment, Justice Ekwo, after scrutinizing the documentary evidence, including the report of INEC on its monitoring of the April 30th delegates election, agreed with the plaintiffs that they were validly and legally elected as authentic Ad-hoc delegates for the Edo State chapter of the PDP.

The court held that the role of INEC in Primary election, Congress and Convention monitoring are statutory and Constitutional and must therefore be strictly adhered to by all political parties.

The court said that going against the elections of the plaintiffs will amount to a brazen violation of laws that are not ambiguous, an action, which no court must allow to stand.

Justice Ekwo, therefore, issued an order of injunction against 1st to 4th defendants restraining them from tampering with the Plaintiffs list, having been duly elected in the Congress of the party held on April 30th.

The court also issued an order of perpetual injunctions against the 1st to 4th defendants stopping them from conducting any other congress with the purpose of replacing the plaintiffs.

Justice Ekwo issued a mandatory order of injunction against INEC, stopping it from recognising or accepting any delegates list other than the one produced by PDP’S Congress of April 30th where plaintiffs emerged as Ad-hoc delegates.

The plaintiffs were elected from 18 Local Government Areas of the State for the purpose of electing National delegates for the House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senatorial elections.
