In a concerted effort to mitigate the impact of the countryโ€™s challenging environment on patients, leading private hospital chain Hemas Hospitals continues to offer patients its mobile laboratory services free of charge, waiving off all transport and logistic charges that usually apply. The timely initiative will enable patients to safely dispense samples to test for a vast portfolio of medical conditions, for the same affordable prices they have to pay when visiting a lab. The move, operated by Hemas Labs, is intended to put high quality diagnostics within the reach of Sri Lankan patients amidst an economic crisis that has crippled transportation systems due to a lack of fuel.

"Laboratory testing is a crucial part in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of patients. However, with the stifling economic crises affecting the daily lives of all Sri Lankans, many patients are greatly challenged and hesitant in making a visit to a laboratory to get these vital diagnostic tests done due to the severe lack of essentials such as fuel in the country today. Therefore, it is for the benefit of these patients, that Hemas Labs is bringing our mobile lab services right to patient doorsteps at affordable rates that are completely free of any transport costs. Our highly skilled and professional team of phlebotomists are fully geared and trained to handle patients of all ages and health levels in any remote setting," remarked Dr. Dhushyanthan Subramaniam, General Manager Hemas Hospitals Laboratory Services.

All reports generated after sample testing are delivered digitally through the Hemas Labs online portal, enabling patients to maintain all their health records on one easily accessible platform, which allows both themselves and their healthcare providers to monitor their wellbeing trends for more accurate diagnostics. For all those who require physical lab reports, Hemas Labs operates an efficient chain of couriers capable of delivering these reports direct to patient homes upon request, at no extra cost to enhance convenience. Patients can make their payments using direct cash payments, card payments or online transfers.

In a mission to provide emergency relief to the worst impacted families and communities in the country due to the ongoing economic crisis, Dialog Axiata PLC, MAS Holdings, Hemas Holdings PLC, Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement and PwC Sri Lanka joined forces to launch the โ€˜Manudam Mehewaraโ€™ relief initiative.

Driven by its shared values and vision of providing immediate assistance to marginalised and vulnerable communities, the โ€˜Manudam Mehewaraโ€™ corporate coalition joined hands with like-minded partners including Sarvodaya, which will identify and provide emergency relief to more than 100,000 adversely affected families, especially communities in deep poverty. PwC partnered the initiative pro bono to monitor financial governance and reporting as per compliance requirements of the corporate partners. Furthermore, ITN, Siyatha, Swarnawahini, TV Derana and Vasantham joined the effort as media partners. Manudam Mehewara will commence operations on 10th April 2022, where urgently required, essential dry rations packs will be distributed to families in need across all 25 districts.

Commenting, Supun Weerasinghe, Group Chief Executive of Dialog Axiata PLC said, โ€œWe are grateful to MAS, Hemas, our project ex*****on partner - Sarvodaya and accountability partner PwC for joining us in this endeavour to provide emergency relief to more than 100,000 families in need across the country. As the trusted digital companion of over 17 million Sri Lankans, we recognised the immediate need to step forward to help relieve the impact on our adversely affected communities. We have always carried out such relief initiatives to help marginalised communities at their greatest hour of need. Given the magnitude of the challenge ahead, we invite Corporate Sri Lanka to join us in this effort.โ€

Speaking at the launch, Suren Fernando, Group CEO - MAS Holdings said, โ€œMAS is an organisation that is known for its social conscience, and at times like this we are privileged to be able to act upon one of MAS' core values - giving back to the community and the country we call home. Having worked with Sarvodaya many times before, we are convinced that if anyone has the bandwidth and capability to significantly make a difference to these vulnerable communities, it is them. Sarvodaya is the ideal implementation partner, with their philosophy and their island wide network of resources. I do sincerely hope that other corporates in Sri Lanka are inspired to join us, recognising the need to act now, and come together through this program or to find ways that are within their means to support the people of this nation during their time of desperate need. This is our nation, our people and our collective responsibility.โ€

Commenting, Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson, Group CEO of Hemas Holdings PLC said โ€œAs a Sri Lankan corporate it is our responsibility to ensure that we address the immediate needs of our people across the country. Our purpose, making healthful living happen, focuses on eliminating inequality and this partnership aligns to our ongoing efforts. In the upcoming months, we will continue to work with partners and carry out interventions that will relieve the burden of our communities and our employees.โ€

Expressing his thoughts on this initiative, Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, President, Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement said, โ€œWe are pleased to join hands with such high-caliber companies like Dialog, MAS and Hemas to launch this humanitarian initiative to provide emergency relief to the families most adversely affected by the current economic crisis. We will be identifying the beneficiaries through scientific criteria based on numbers, evidence and we aim to cover all 25 districts. With food insecurity rising at alarming rates, we are planning to go a step beyond providing relief to also offer sustainable solutions such as home gardening to these families. I invite the other corporates to also join this effort so that collectively, we can look after our own brothers and sisters in the country.โ€

The Manudam Mehewara programme will be conducted for 60 โ€“ 90 days, until a sustainable benefit transfer system is established in the country through an effective economic recovery plan.

Sampath Bank launched the first phase of the coral replanting programme for the protection of marine resources in the waters off Mirissa coast.

Branded โ€˜A breath to the ocean,โ€™ the bank invited other environmentally conscious entities to participate in this programme to transplant living corals onto dying corals and thus revive the marine life of Sri Lanka.

A land-based component of this corporate responsibility programme is a campaign to replant and replenish the mangrove wetlands in the area.

Sampath Bankโ€™s coral restoration project involves underwater coral farming and sending trained scuba divers into the oceanโ€™s depths to transplant the new clusters of coral.

โ€œBeing a responsible enterprise that takes pride in its Sri Lankan roots, Sampath Bank is committed to championing environmental sustainability,โ€ said Nanda Fernando - Managing Director, Sampath Bank PLC.

โ€œAs the world struggles with environmental issues caused by the despoilation of natural resources, business enterprises have partnered with international organizations to prevent or reverse the effects of ecological disasters.

A total of 75,909 cancer cases were diagnosed in Sri Lanka over a five-year period up to the year 2020, and 57% of those diagnosed were women. โ€˜Loss of Hairโ€™ is a major side effect of the chemotherapy treatment that these patients must undergo. Realising the psychological trauma these women suffer, and to help break the stigma that surrounds โ€˜loss of hairโ€™, Kumarika Sri Lanka, a leading hair care brand in Sri Lanka, embarked on the purpose driven โ€˜Sonduru Dririyawanthiโ€™ campaign. The campaign was designed to help provide for natural hair wigs for women diagnosed with cancer. Launched on 5th October 2021, the campaign was initiated on the belief that every woman is beautiful, regardless of her external appearance.

Kumarika plans to donate 6000 wigs annually to women diagnosed with cancer. Kumarika partnered with Indira Cancer Trust and the Lions Clubs of Aluthgama Bentota and Galkissa and with the support of the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka College of Oncologists. After the first donation to the Kotelawala Defense University Hospital in November 2021, and subsequent donations were made to Kurunegala Hospital and Anuradhapura Hospitals on 23rd and 24th of November 2021 respectively.

Ceylinco Life's โ€˜E-waste Collection Dayโ€™ efforts for 2021 culminated in the prevention of 745 kilograms of electronic waste being dumped in landfills; the equivalent of stopping 7,200 lbs. of carbon from entering the atmosphere or saving 235 trees.

This took the cumulative figure for e-waste diverted from landfill by the Company over the past two years alone to a significant 1.7 metric tons.

The E-waste Collection Day is an initiative spearheaded by the life insurance leaderโ€™s Green Club. Members of the Club collected abandoned and malfunctioning electronic equipment from the Companyโ€™s employees at all levels that report to the Head Office. Uncollected, this potentially toxic electronic waste may have been disposed of haphazardly and been harmful to the planet.

Among the discarded devices collected from Ceylinco Life offices and homes of employees were items of electronic equipment such as printers, personal computers and parts, laptops, networking equipment, scanners, mobile phones, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, UPS units, video cameras, pocket and desk calculators, telephones, video games, electronic components and multiple types of batteries including Lead, Nickel, and Cadmium batteries, telecommunication and server batteries.

Commenting on this event, the President of Ceylinco Lifeโ€™s Green Club Mr Tilan Wijesinghe said: โ€œGood habits are formed through repetition. By holding annual events and consistently creating awareness about environmental conservation and how individual actions can make a difference, we hope to promote environmental consciousness not just among the Ceylinco Life employees, but in the communities they live in, with the hope that it will become a habit that will benefit our planet in the long run.โ€

Upon collection over several days during the year, the electronic waste was handed over to a reputed company that specialises in recycling these items. Before the E-waste Collection Day that took place members of the Club also created awareness among employees about the adverse effects of electronic waste that is disposed of in the environment.

Alumex PLC, Sri Lankaโ€™s leading fully integrated aluminium profiles manufacturer, and member of the Hayleys Group, recently commemorated a ten year legacy of focused support and assistance for Sri Lankaโ€™s visually impaired community.

Commencing from 2012, Alumex has empowered visually impaired individuals with steady, rewarding, meaningful jobs manufacturing aluminium white canes. In that time, Alumex has also donated more than 30,000 white canes, with each cane assembled by visually impaired workers, while the manufacturing cost was borne completely by Alumex.

โ€œWorking with the visually impaired community over the past decade has been a deeply rewarding and inspiring experience for our entire team. Since we commenced this initiative, we have had the privilege of seeing this small and vital enterprise grow, and create new opportunities for visually impaired Sri Lankans.

โ€œThe pandemic has affected the community very adversely, as social distancing has further limited their interactions with the general public and other individuals as well as employment opportunities. As such, over the past years, we doubled down on our efforts to roll out new campaigns to raise awareness while enhancing our existing initiatives to support the community further,โ€ Alumex Managing Director Pramul Dediwela said.

Alumex has also rolled out social initiatives on behalf of the community, such as the โ€˜Invite Light for Sightโ€™ campaign to promote eye donations. The campaign aims to create awareness of the importance of eye donations for the visually impaired. The project is an extension of the Alumex White Cane Donation project, which has the companyโ€™s workforce assembling and distributing white canes.

Alumex MD Pramuk Dediwela (centre left) and Mabroc Teas MD Niran Ranatunge at the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital ward that was converted to a COVID-19 high-dependency unit

In a bid to alleviate the growing strain on the countryโ€™s healthcare sector, Hayleys Group companies Alumex PLC and Mabroc Teas Ltd. have partnered to refurbish a ward at the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital, contributing both infrastructure and manpower to convert it into a fully-fledged COVID-19 high-dependency unit.

Completed in just 25 days, the new 24-bed isolation and intensive care facility for COVID-19 patients was inaugurated recently and officially handed over to hospital officials, with the aim to bolster existing emergency care capacity and facilities. The new unit has already provided vital medical care for over 100 patients to date.

Apart from the construction work, Alumex also ensured that the new ward was fitted with the specialised equipment required of a COVID-19 high dependency care unit; namely negative pressure systems, multi-para monitors and water filtration systems, among others. Each room has been outfitted with oxygen and vacuum lines, as well as curtained partitions and fabricated doors for patient isolation.

Additionally, intent on contributing in their own way to the healthcare heroes fighting in the frontlines of the pandemic, volunteers from Alumexโ€™s own workforce pulled their weight on-ground in the renovation of the new facility.

โ€œIt is during trying times like these that there is a greater need for organisations to come together and support healthcare efforts within their communities,โ€ said Alumex Managing Director Pramuk Dediwela. โ€œBed space and medical equipment are the need of the hour and together with our partner Mabroc Teas, we are humbled by the opportunity to ease this burden for the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital.โ€

Mabroc Teas Managing Director Niran Ranatunge said, โ€œThe Kiribathgoda Base Hospital serves a large segment of the population in the district. We felt that we could best support this community by providing a fully equipped facility that would provide greater access to urgent care for high-risk patients suffering from COVID-19. We worked closely with Alumex throughout the operation, and were able to hand over the facility swiftly, through meticulous planning, teamwork, and tireless efforts from everyone involved.โ€

The Health and Education Ministers of countries in WHO South-East Asia Region, and the Heads of UN Agencies today committed to Health Promoting Schools for healthier generations and societies, and for schools to remain operational during public health emergencies and be resilient and well prepared for future emergencies.

โ€œThe pandemic is a strong reminder of the importance of maintaining strong education systems that support the interlinked objectives of education and health for all children and adolescents leaving no one behind, in normal circumstances as well as during emergency situations like this pandemic,โ€ said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director WHO South-East Asia, who convened a meeting of heads of partner agencies UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF and WFP, and health and education ministers from the Region on Health Promoting Schools.

At the three-day inter-ministerial meeting that began this morning, health and education ministers from countries in WHO South-East Asia Region adopted a โ€˜Call to Actionโ€™ to scale up the implementation of comprehensive school health programmes that promote the health and wellbeing of children and adolescents.

As a prelude to the ministerial meeting, the Regional leadership of UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, WFP, WHO held a Summit and deliberated on strengthening school health programmes in the Region and signed a โ€˜Joint UN statement on strengthening education, school health, nutrition and well-beingโ€™ to collectively advocate for a healthier generation and provide harmonized joint technical support to countries.

The Health Promoting School approach aims at advancing health, nutrition, mental health and the overall wellbeing of school-age children and adolescents, teachers and other staff members. As children and adolescents spend most of their formative years in schools, promoting healthy behavior from early childhood through the school setting will benefit their immediate and later health in their adult life, as well as the health and wellbeing of their families and wider communities.
