The COVID-19 virus has been ravaging on for months now. The alarms have been rung and a global pandemic declared. Nearly 15 million people are estimated to have been infected with it, and at least another 600,000 dead. The US alone accounts for over 4 million confirmed cases of infection, and nearly 150,000 dead. The disproportionate amount of cases begs the question of “What happened?”. While some pundits blame it on the role of the media and the spread of misinformation on the virus, its management and containment strategies, others blame the lack of preparedness on institutions such as the FDA and CDC which have seen major slashes in funding in recent years. What I choose to blame it on is profligacy and the proliferation of a laxity in morals and public duty.
