Mary Anning's real life history and facts of this inspirational pioneering woman of science who contributed greatly to the fields of geology, archeology, paleontology and yes, even Darwin's Theory of Evolution. More than just a 'fossil hunter; the real facts vs. the movie Ammonite is that she not only sold fossils to tourists but she used the full scientific method to document and record her fossil finds.
A fictional account of the life history of Mary Anning , loosely represented in the recent movie called Ammonite, might have you wondering if it was all real. Well, truthfully, not all that much is known about Mary Anning;s private life and biography but some do call her the Princess of Paleontology for the pioneering and remarkable discoveries she brought to what is now known as the field of paleontology.
Living during a time when misogyny and Georgian masculinity dictated the measure by which women could be given full & proper credit for their achievements, the facts tell us that Mary Anning contributed extraordinary discoveries via her fossil hunting to the scientific world.
In this short history video, I go over her many remarkable accomplishments and offer a brief glimpse of her real life of Mary Anning (in contrast to the film that is loosely based upon this historical woman's life.)
Sadly, the film focuses more upon a fictional lesbian relationship than on Mary Anning's life long accomplishments as a fossil hunter. But it does give an accurate representation of the facts of hardship of her life. Born into poverty, she worked her entire life to not only establish herself as a scientist but also, she hunted fossils to sell to tourists and museums as a means to support herself and her mother.
