Today, July 13th, Ephraim Martin is observing his birthday with his wishes for a City Holiday, a main Street, and a major Monument for the Black man who founded Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, a Caribbean man from the country of Haiti. SINCE SO MANY OF YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE BIRTHDAY MAN: On July 13th, 1956, in the little town of Soho/Seaforth, St. Thomas, Jamaica, Ephraim Martin was delivered to this earth. By the mid-1970s, he became a popular photojournalist with the world's oldest newspaper, the Daily Gleaner, and sister newspaper the Daily Star.
He became well-known for his several special weekly feature columns. During his time at the newspapers, he covered world-leaders such as Queen Elizabeth, President Fidel Castro and other global leaders in politics, entertainment, and sports before landing in Chicago in the early 1980s, still working for the overseas Gleaner/Star and the local Chicago Daily Defender.
Since 1982, he used reggae and world beat music as art forms and a vehicle of expression of the voiceless peoples of the world, for an end to apartheid, the freedom of Nelson Mandela, for freedom and democracy in the world, and to fight to end systemic racism.
