Going to the cinema is an outing many people don't think twice about. But for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing, there are barriers preventing that enjoyment.

I want to raise an important issue regarding the absence of Auslan interpreters on TV channel stations during Cyclone Jasper in Far North Queensland. This lack of vital communication support for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community is not only a disservice but also falls short of the standards required by Australian broadcasting legislation.

Under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, TV broadcasters are obligated to ensure accessibility in their services. This includes providing adequate facilities for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, such as Auslan interpreters, especially during emergency broadcasts. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 further enforces this by mandating equal access to information and services for individuals with disabilities.

The failure of TV stations to include Auslan interpreters in their emergency broadcasts during critical events like Cyclone Jasper is a clear oversight of these legal requirements. It’s crucial that television broadcasters recognise their role in disseminating accessible information to all segments of the population, particularly in times of crisis.

I strongly urge TV broadcasters in Australia to re-evaluate their emergency communication protocols and ensure compliance with the Broadcasting Services Act and the Disability Discrimination Act. Including Auslan interpreters in broadcasts is essential to provide equitable access to information for all, fulfilling both a legal obligation and a moral duty to the community.

Inclusive communication should be a cornerstone of our media landscape, especially during emergencies. Let’s commit to making our broadcasting services accessible and inclusive for every Australian.
