After sharing her experience about her mission trip to Jamaica, Shohreh Ghassemi speaks about one of her biggest passions: “I definitely think one of my major fires that have gotten me to where I am today is my love for service, helping others. I like to believe that most dental professionals go into dentistry because they truly care about others and they have a strong desire to help…Using dentistry as a tool to help change people’s lives and ease their pains has really pushed me to great places in life and great experiences. The way that dentistry has the ability to help various communities and not just your own--so you’re really thinking of the global aspect. So many more lives than, you know, just in your own little world. Shohreh Ghassemi (a D4 at VCU School of Dentistry pictured on the right) speaking about her hurdles: “My parents fled from Iran as political refugees with my two older siblings due to religious persecution…Being immigrants in this country, it just wasn’t easy for my parents at first. They had multiple jobs at times. Being able to provide a life for us was something different than what they grew up with in Iran… I had a hard time keeping up with school growing up. It just wasn’t my priority. I just wasn’t motivated as a kid! I remember this one story about how I came home one day during my sophomore year in high school, and I had a report card that had 115 days of absences out of, what, 180 instructional days of high school? Not that it’s something I’m proud of at all, but you know what? I had all A's and B's on my report card with that many absences! So, because of that, I struggled to develop the necessary skill sets and to really excel in a more rigorous academic setting like university or a graduate program. I just never really tried, at first... Once I realized my true passion was dentistry and that what I needed to do in order to get to that was go through something I knew I didn’t have any skills for, it was really hard. I knew I had to overcome that challenge and probably work harder than all of my classmates to achieve that exact same thing. In reviewing every associate agreement, Natasha Gillis, our Smiling Lawyer, recommends grabbing 3 writing tools (2 highlighters and a pencil). You can use gel pens, crayons, sharpies or any other writing tool that you like. Just make sure they are 3 different colors. Next, HIGHLIGHT in yellow the items that are absolute deal breakers. This is your list of "deal breakers". Highlight or mark items that would be nice to change but not critical. This is your list of "ideals". Finally, use a pencil to circle or put a star next to items that you are confused about or do not understand. This will be for your attorney to help you address. Bonus: Take your highlighted items and create a T-chart to see a side-by-side comparison. This is a quick and simple way to read through your contracts and help identify negotiation points as you get changes made effectively.
