Hurricane Laura Evacuees Finding Shelter At Hotel Rooms Provided By City Of Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Hundreds of evacuees from the Beaumont area arrived on buses at the Wyndham Garden Dallas North hotel in Farmers Branch, where the city of Dallas booked every room for those fleeing Hurricane Laura.

“I think it’s gonna be really bad. I think it’s going to be really bad,” said James Stanley.

Stanley says his family spent 16 hours on a bus they boarded in Vidor.

“It was a long ride,” he said.

They made it all the way to San Antonio first only to find hotels there full and turned toward North Texas.

“I haven’t slept since 5 o’clock two days ago,” said his father-in-law, Billy Hales.

The family joined others at the Wyndham Garden Dallas North hotel, where the city of Dallas has rented every room for evacuees.

“When COVID-19 first started, we laid off 50 percent of our staff,” said general manager Zachery Warren.

Hotels across Texas are now scrambling to bring back workers.

“We don’t have the housekeeping staff or the food and beverage staff to be able to service all the people coming in, so we’re really struggling,” said Warren.

Hotels, though, are grateful for the challenge that brings them not only business, but a means to help.

“The phone call to bring people back to work is one of the best calls you’ll ever make,” said Warren.

Dallas’ emergency management director, Rocky Vaz, said many of the buses arriving from the Gulf Coast were bringing senior citizens and families with children.

They arrived on buses, taking up every other row to promote social distancing. Most carried no more than a small bag of belongings.

Justice Sherman of Beaumont brought her dog, Pablo.

“When I had nothing or nobody, I had that dog,” she said.

She almost stayed behind because of him. Family, she says, offered her a place to stay, but not Pablo.

“Well, ‘you can’t bring your dog’; well, I’m not coming,” she said.

Arriving in the Dallas area, she learned she’d have to board Pablo with Dallas Animal Services while at the hotel.

“You’re gonna get him back. I promise,” said a city employee.

Wiping away tears , she signed paperwork agreeing to the arrangement.

“He can’t stay. That’s gonna hurt,” said Sherman.

As a storm threatens to destroy her home, it’s one more worry she carries with her.

COVID-19 Bulletin (08/27/20)

Even through the total number of cases reported in Dallas County was 578 and nine deaths on Wednesday, 424 of them were from the state’s backlog. County Judge Clay Jenkins said just 154 new COVID-19 cases were from August on Wednesday, continuing the trend of lower case numbers in August.

At TCU in Fort Worth, COVID-19 cases have doubled to 257 cases on Wednesday after reporting 111 cases on Monday, The Dallas Morning News reports. The majority of the cases came from students living in off-campus housing.

There are still 200 people dying each day from COVID-19 in Texas, but hospitalizations have dropped by 20 percent in the last week. The Texas Tribune has more on the state numbers.

At a jail in Fannin County, there are 178 COVID-19 cases, and about 70 percent of the inmates and staff could have been exposed. As a result, the jail has been put on lockdown.

Dallas County is reporting fewer cases, but cases have already doubled in just two days at TCU.

Families From Port Arthur To Lake Charles Ride Out Hurricane Laura In North Texas

MESQUITE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Thousands of families who live along the U.S. Gulf Coast are coming to North Texas to safely ride out the storm.

At times, a line of cars approached two miles long outside an evacuee welcome center in Mesquite on Wednesday. Families waited for hours to get their hotel assignments.

“Four hours,” said Pauline Louis, who evacuated with her family from Port Arthur. “I just put it in God’s hands.”

Other evacuees have family in North Texas they can stay with.

“It’s not going to be easy,” said Nancy Pennartz, who left Lake Charles, Louisiana for a relative’s home in North Richland Hills on Tuesday. “That’s why we’re here. We’ve got family. You stick to your family and friends. Oh, yeah. That’s what pulls you through. And your faith.”

She’s dealing with the uncertainty of Hurricane Laura on top of a cancer battle.

“What am I going to come home to?” she said. “Am I going to have a home? And if I have to have some more chemo, and it makes me sick, where am I going to go? It’s that unknown that scares me.”

Still, her family is grateful to have each other.

“I’m just thankful we’re away from the storm,” said Chris Pennartz, Nancy’s son. “I can replace property, but I can’t replace lives.”

At another evacuation center in Ellis County, a family from Port Arthur arrived to escape the hurricane’s path.

“I told my sister, ‘you know what. We got the kids. Let’s just get out of here,'” said Glenda Moody. “Of course, we didn’t want to leave. You don’t want to leave your home… everything behind. But, what do you do? I’d rather lose everything and we’re okay.”

How quickly these families can get back to their homes all depends on what kind of damage this hurricane leaves behind. Many evacuees are prepared to be in North Texas for weeks.

Families from areas along the coast such as Port Arthur and Lake Charles, Louisiana arrived in North Texas to ride out Hurricane Laura.
