National Press Freedom Day: Celebrating the Legacy of Marcelo H. Del Pilar and the Power of a Free Press

"Freedom of the press is a precious privilege that no country can forego." - Mahatma Gandhi

Today marks a historical occasion that is celebrated in honor of the father of Philippine Journalism, Marcelo H. Del Pilar—the National Press Freedom Day.
During his young days, Marcelo H. Del Pilar was already skilled at nurturing the seeds of nationalism and rising up to confront the excesses of the colonial rulers. Mariano Ponce stated that in 1880, when del Pilar was a high school student, they often got together with a group of students at Trozo, Tondo, where Andres Bonifacio was born and where the organizers of the Katipunan and Philippine Masonry had their initial ideas.
From founding the first Tagalog-Spanish bilingual newspaper in the Philippines— Diariong Tagalog, to replacing Graciano Lopez Jaena as the editor of La Solidaridad, Plaridel continued to write and become a voice for the Filipinos through his pen. He wrote satires against Spanish Friars, namely “Dasalan at Tuksuhan,” and “Kaiingat Kaayo.”

Thanks to Plaridel’s undying dedication to express and voice out what is true, the newer generations of journalists are inspired to do the same. Today we celebrate press freedom, and the role it plays in a vibrant and democratic society. This day we commemorate the right of journalists and media outlets to report news with the whole truth.

Let this day serve as a reminder of the obligation to preserve the truth, openness, and integrity of reporting that comes with press freedom. In addition to paying tribute to Marcelo H. Del Pilar's legacy, we must also recognize the current challenges that journalists face, such as censorship threats and on-the-job hazards. Their bravery and determination are the reasons democracy flourishes and the public is kept informed.
Recognizing that the free press is essential to justice, accountability, and the people's voice, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting it on this National Press Freedom Day.

From Restless Seeker to Beacon of Grace: The Transformative Journey of Saint Augustine

The feast of Saint Augustine celebrates a life that mirrors the struggles and triumphs of the human spirit. Augustine of Hippo, once a restless seeker, wandered far from holiness before becoming one of Christianity's most renowned saints and theologians—a living testament to God's boundless grace.

Born in 354 AD in present-day Algeria, Augustine was raised by his devout Christian mother, Saint Monica, and a pagan father. Despite his mother’s fervent prayers, Augustine pursued worldly pleasures and success, seeking truth in philosophies that left his soul unfulfilled.

Yet, Augustine’s restlessness ultimately led him to what his heart truly longed for—God’s infinite love. Through his mother’s prayers and the influence of Saint Ambrose, Augustine’s life was transformed. His conversion marked the beginning of a new chapter as he rose to become a distinguished theologian and Bishop of Hippo.

Saint Augustine's life illustrates that no one is beyond God's mercy. His journey from sin to grace offers hope to anyone struggling with doubt and temptation. On this feast day, may his story inspire us to pursue God with the same fervor, knowing that no matter how far we stray, we can always return to His loving embrace.

“Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new,” Augustine wrote, reminding us that it’s never too late to turn toward God’s light and become a vessel of His grace.

As we honor Saint Augustine today, may his journey from darkness to light fill our hearts with hope and joy. His story is a tribute to the transformative power of God's love—a love that patiently waits for us, no matter how long we take to return.

To the Known and the Lesser-Known Heroes

Today, we commemorate not only one but the countless heroes who have shaped and continue to shape the Philippines. Alongside the well-known heroes, let us also honor the lesser-known individuals who work passionately to support our thriving economy—the dedicated teachers, brave medical professionals, overseas Filipino workers, and all the hardworking Filipinos who labor day and night.

“National Heroes Day specifies no hero; the law that established this celebration does not name a single one. This lack of specificity offers an opportunity to celebrate the bravery of not one, not a few, but all Filipino heroes who have faced death or persecution for home, nation, justice, and freedom,” as stated by the Official Gazette.

This day is dedicated to honoring the illustrious heroes who sacrificed everything to free our nation. They made significant historical contributions and inspired many Filipinos to pursue careers in similar fields. Their selfless actions have left a lasting impression on our nation, and their sacrifices will always be regarded as the foundation of its independence.

In addition to our historical heroes, modern-day heroes exemplify the bravery, tenacity, and compassion of those who came before them. First responders, educators, medical professionals, and many others have stepped forward to serve their communities and risk their lives for the greater good. Their unwavering dedication and courage in the face of adversity inspire us all. They remind us that genuine heroism exists in every citizen, in every act of service, and in every moment of bravery—not just in the past.

Ultimately, the true national heroes are not only the brave soldiers of history; they are also the ordinary citizens who continue to work towards creating a free and prosperous country for present and future generations. Let us strive to become the heroes of our own stories and the stories of our nation, and let us honor the memories of those who came before us on this National Heroes Day.

“The Filipinos are Worth Dying For" a Timeless Quote by Former Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.

Annually, on August 21, the nation observes Ninoy Aquino Day as a special non-working holiday to honor him. Benigno Aquino Jr. was a senator during the martial law era and the most influential opposition leader against former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. He criticized corruption and poverty during Marcos' regime and planned to run for president in 1973, but the election was postponed due to martial law.

Aquino was imprisoned for opposing the administration and was sentenced to death in 1977. His sentence was commuted, allowing him to travel to the United States for medical treatment. After three years, he chose to return to the Philippines despite threats against him and was assassinated upon arrival at Manila International Airport in 1983.

His death became a rallying point for Filipinos determined to end Marcos' administration, igniting the People Power Revolution in 1986, which was pivotal in restoring democracy in the Philippines. In 2004, Republic Act No. 9256 declared August 21 as Ninoy Aquino Day.

This year, the observance has been rescheduled to Friday, August 23, 2024, in accordance with Proclamation No. 665 issued by Malacañang Palace, to promote domestic tourism while maintaining the historical significance of the day. As we honor his commitment to democracy, may we continue his legacy by striving for a better future for our nation.

FEATURE | From Winter Boredom to a Global Sport: The Invention of Basketball by James Naismith

In December 1891, college teacher James Naismith had a problem. His students, forced indoors because of winter, had become rowdy. They had a lot of energy, but no way to burn it off. It was too cold to play football and baseball, and too dangerous to play those sports in the gym.

The school asked Naismith to invent a new indoor sport. Naismith remembered a rock-tossing game he played as a child. How about a game where players threw a ball at a target? The team that tossed the most balls into the target would win.

Naismith called his new game “basket ball” and wrote up 13 rules. Two peach baskets and a soccer ball were the equipment. Naismith put the baskets at each end of the gym, nailed 10 feet above the floor. The teams each had nine players. Naismith threw the ball in the air for the first tipoff. On December 21, 1891, the game of basketball was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1936. For the first Olympic basketball game, Naismith tossed the ball for the tipoff. After the championship game, he presented the medals to the players. The game James Naismith invented as a winter “distraction” had turned into a global sport.

Today, basketball is not just a sport but a religion and a lifestyle for Filipinos. We Sebastinians take great pride in winning, whether academically or in sports especially in basketball.

St. Ezekiel Moreno: The Missionary Saint Who Transformed Trials into Triumphs

On August 19, Catholics worldwide celebrate the feast of St. Ezekiel Moreno, a saint whose life radiates hope, compassion, and unwavering faith. St. Ezekiel’s journey from a small town in Spain to the far-flung missions of the Philippines and Colombia is nothing short of inspiring.

Ezekiel was born in Alfaro, Spain, in 1848 and felt a strong call to religious life from an early age. He joined the Augustinian Recollects, embarking on a journey through some of the most challenging missionary territories of his time. His first major mission was to the Philippines, where he not only preached the Gospel but also lived it by immersing himself in the needs of the people. He dedicated himself to improving the lives of those he served, meeting their spiritual and material needs with unwavering love and compassion.

Throughout his life, St. Ezekiel was deeply committed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which motivated his tireless work and profound empathy for those he served. After decades of service, he was transferred to Colombia and appointed Bishop of Pasto. His life changed drastically at this point. Diagnosed with cancer, he bore his suffering with grace, offering it up for the souls in his care. His battle with cancer only increased his empathy for the sick, and even in his final days, he continued to pray for those suffering from illness.

The story of St. Ezekiel serves as a powerful reminder of how faith can transform lives. Even when faced with his own mortality, he continued to serve others, exemplifying the spirit of genuine Christian charity. His profound spirituality, combined with his practical work in the missions, made him an admired figure both during and after his death.

As we celebrate St. Ezekiel Moreno's feast day, may his story remind us that even in the face of great suffering, there is always hope, and faith will provide us the strength to persevere. Whether we face physical illness or spiritual trials, St. Ezekiel's life offers a model of courage, resilience, and unwavering faith in God's providence.

FEATURE | St. Sebastian: Pierced by Arrows, Strengthened by Faith

Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, athletes, and of those who desire a saintly death. He was also venerated as a protector from a bubonic plague and as a patron saint of plague victims as he defended the city of Rome against the plague in 680.

When it was discovered that Saint Sebastian was a Christian who had converted soldiers, he was given the order to be executed by arrows; however, a Christian widow healed him. After that, he showed himself to Diocletian, who gave him a beating death sentence. After his body was dumped into a sewer, a second devout woman who had dreamed of his burial found it there. His remains are believed to be in the ancient pilgrimage site, the Basilica of San Sebastiano on the Appian Way.

Today, San Sebastian College—Recoletos, Manila is named after the Roman centurion turned martyr, upholding his values and applying them in the institution, honing students into becoming globally competent and morally upright.

Tagaste: The journey towards Augustinian excellence

Tagaste—now called Souk Ahras, was a Roman-Berber city in present-day Algeria.

Originally located in Numidia's northeastern highlands, Tagaste was a small Numidian village. St. Augustine of Hippo was born into a Berber tribe that then resided in the said area, which was back then surrounded by vast forests.

Today, as a symbol of Spiritual Renewal and rebirth to the Augustinian Recollect Values, Tagaste has become a San Sebastian College—Recoletos tradition where new students and lay collaborators are formally welcomed to the community.

The Senior High School Department successfully concluded its first Parents-Teacher Conference last Friday, August 9, at the Bar Review Center. The event was well-attended by parents and focused on outlining the school's rules and regulations, as well as introducing its new vision and mission. This conference served as an essential platform for fostering communication between parents and educators, ensuring that everyone is aligned with the school's objectives for the academic year.

In addition to discussing key policies, the conference also featured the election for the parents' committee. This election is crucial for enhancing parental involvement in school activities and decision-making processes. By establishing a committee, parents can actively participate in shaping the educational experience for their children, promoting a collaborative environment between the school and families.
