Look deeply within each person you encounter, no matter how brilliant or dull, refined or crude, righteous or wicked you judge this person to be.

Beyond their clothes, beyond their skin, beyond their behavior, beyond their words.

Beyond the emotions they show, the personality in which they dress, past whatever masks they don to conceal their inner woes.

Look deeply and see the vicious war each one fights inside, the battle to remain human in a maddening world—a world you will never know, for no two of us are placed in the same world and no two of us confront the same challenges—

—the sickness at knowing one’s own failures and deficiencies, the yearning to be more, the disappointment at not being that, the struggle to fight every sorrow, every pain, every plummeting, disastrous trauma of life…

True, perhaps not everyone fights every battle. Some have long surrendered.

But the very fact that this person was assigned this battle tells us more than can be spoken, for the One who created him knows he has the power to prevail and win.

That alone is enough to admire, and to be humbled, asking yourself, “Do I fight a battle nearly as fierce as the one I expect this person to win? In what way am I any better?”

"Life lives on life. This is the sense of the symbol of the Ouroboros, the serpent biting its tail. Everything that lives lives on the death of something else. Your own body will be food for something else. Anyone who denies this, anyone who holds back, is out of order. Death is an act of giving."

~Joseph Campbell

Off the top of your head, what are the most famous relics in Christianity? The Holy Grail? The True Cross?

Well, better add the Holy Fo****in to that list.

According to the Bible, Jesus was circumcised as a young boy and his fo****in was saved. After his death, it became an incredibly valuable relic – the only remaining piece of Christ’s body left on earth.

If the stories are to be believed, this relic also held mysterious powers. For example, rubbing it on the eyes of the blind was said to make them see again.

So what happened to the holy fo****in (or holy prepuce, as it’s sometimes called)?

Records indicate that it initially disappeared, but later resurfaced in Rome around 800 AD. The holy fo****in eventually landed in the Italian village of Calcata, where its display at a local church became a source of intense pride.

In 1900, the Vatican became worried it would generate controversy. Pope Leo XIII issued a decree threatening to excommunicate anyone who wrote about the holy fo****in, but allowed the relic to remain in Calcata.

Then, in 1983, the sacred relic mysteriously disappeared from its display case. Local residents were furious – some accused the Vatican of taking it, others believed it was stolen by Satanists.

The mystery was never solved. To this day, researchers are still working to track down the whereabouts of the missing fo****in.

If, finally, we were to bring to the sight of everyone the terrible sufferings and afflictions to which his life is constantly exposed, he would be seized with horror.

If we were to conduct the most hardened and callous optimist through hospitals, infirmaries, operating theatres, through prisons, torture-chambers, and slave-hovels, over battlefields and to places of ex*****on; if we were to open to him all the dark abodes of misery, where it shuns the gaze of cold curiosity, and finally were to allow him to glance into the dungeon of Ugolino where prisoners starved to death, he too would certainly see in the end what kind of a world is this "best of all possible worlds." For whence did Dante get the material for his hell, if not from this actual world of ours?

“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.”

— Aldous Huxley

Chavin culture (1500-200 BC) used the mescaline-containing Wachuma (San Pedro) cactus as central to their ritualistic spirituality. Their society wasn’t led by the military but by the priests, who played the main role in societal leadership. The most important rituals were held in the temple Chavin de Huantar.

Plant medicine was mixed with sensory deprivation in dark, underground corridors and the sounds of different instruments to induce a deeply altered state within the participants, allowing them mystical experiences and communication with the spirits.

Would you have courage to participate in such rituals?

"Drug dependencies are the result of habitual, unexamined, and obsessives behavior; these are precisely the tendencies in our psychological makeup that the psychedelics mitigate. The plant hallucinogens dissolve habits and hold motivations up to the inspection by a wider, less egocentric, and more grounded point of view within the individual. It is foolish to suggest that there is no risk, but it is equally uninformed to suggest that the risk is not worth taking."

“By observing natural scientific discoveries through a perception deepened by meditation, we can develop a new awareness of reality. This awareness could become the bedrock of a spirituality that is not based on the dogmas of a given religion, but on insights into a higher and deeper meaning. I am referring to the ability to recognize, to read, and to understand the firsthand revelations.”

“Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom...is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.”

—Anthony Bourdain

"it’s not the large things that
send a man to the
madhouse. death he’s ready for, or
murder, in**st, robbery, fire, flood…
no, it’s the continuing series of small tragedies
that send a man to the
madhouse…
not the death of his love
but a shoelace that snaps
with no time left …"
