NEC Corporation, together with Kimuraya Sohonten Co., a long-established bread maker, and Abema TV, a video streaming service, have teamed up to produce bread with flavours inspired by the romantic Japanese television program, "I Fell in Love with You Today." NEC's artificial intelligence (AI) has analyzed conversations from the cast of the show and the lyrics of songs that feature fruits and sweets to produce five varieties of bread, "Ren AI Pan," that aim to link flavours with romantic feelings. Kimuraya plans to begin providing Ren AI Pan at supermarkets and online stores in areas surrounding Tokyo from February 1, 2024.

Absolicon Solar Thermal Modules

Tetra Pak has announced a collaboration with Absolicon, a Swedish solar thermal company, to offer a standardised solution for industrial equipment powered by renewable thermal energy (heat).

Absolicon has designed a scalable solar thermal module that can be integrated with current and new UHT lines and enable a range of decarbonisation options, including a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, based on customer requirements and location.

Tetra Pak’s UHT processing line for high-temperature sterilisation of dairy products is the first solution to be offered together with a scalable solar thermal supply, with the potential to reduce fossil fuel usage by up to 40%. The first module is forecasted to be installed during 2024, before scaling to a worldwide market.

Cortec Advanced Films takes VCI (V***r Corrosion Inhibiting) film and bag production seriously is underscored by the significant investment Cortec’s CEO recently made in a new state-of-the-art co-extrusion line at the Cambridge, Minnesota, plant.
The new multimillion-dollar line, E23, promises to benefit both customers and employees as CAF continues to blaze new ground with an expanding portfolio of specialty film and bag products.

Technology Upgrade
The new equipment will allow CAF to dramatically increase the production volumes of co-extruded films and will give workers the agility to change tolerances with the touch of a button. The previous co-extruder required manual adjustment and could only run at approximately 60% of the new extruder capacity.

This improvement will greatly increase efficiency for both specialty films and any standard VpCI® product CAF may eventually choose to run on the equipment. E23 can extrude tubing up to 75 inches (190.5 cm) wide and sheeting up

When a major UK pet food producer wanted better machine utilisation with the aim of raising its OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) by 3 points, it decided to ask experts at bearing specialist NSK if they could evaluate processes and systems to help with this improvement goal. The prompt to engage NSK arrived after hearing about the company’s AIP Added Value Programme, in particular its ability to improve bearing life through a mixture of training and application engineering services. This approach focuses firmly on identifying improvement opportunities in three keys assets: people, plant and processes.

At the pet food facility, the management team was aware of various application issues which NSK experts viewed, leading to the creation of a process map. The process map is one of the most powerful elements of AIP as it focuses on generating a complete documented review of the production process from start to finish, placing particular emphasis on critical bearing applications. GEA, a pioneer in brewing technology, is presenting a groundbreaking innovation for wort boiling at this year's BrauBeviale: The new GEA QBOIL process reduces energy consumption in this process step by 60% compared to conventional systems without energy recovery.

GEA QBOIL combines three technologies to create a highly efficient process: the Fed-Batch process with gradual addition of wort, fractional boiling and heat recovery by v***r condensation. GEA Innovation Manager Dr. Daniel Heller explains the principle: “The wort, actually only the extract-rich 80 percent of it, is boiled step by step. In addition, we recover the energy used for ev***ration directly within the same brew to preheat the wort.” With this lean heat cycle, GEA prevents transfer and storage losses, which can occur with modern energy storage systems with hot water tanks. This massively reduces energy consumption and increases the efficiency of the wort boiling process.

The Phoenix BMC development project is about upcycling residual materials from the brewing process and using them for energy recovery.

At its core, Phoenix BMC consists of three units for processing the various brewing residuals. Protein hy-drolysate and mineral fertiliser are separated out before biogas is derived from what is left. Steinecker has been testing this development project since early 2023 at Ustersbacher Brewery in Bavaria, Germany.

Now, the first module for extracting protein hydrolysate from spent grains and yeast has been put into operation. “Some of the equipment installed for this process – the colloid mill and the membrane filter for the mash – were new to us from a brewing perspective. So, we first had to get a handle on the technology. And after a series of trials, we were able to do just that,” says Dr. Ralph Schneid, who is in charge of product development at Steinecker.

Concept chicken represent a growing market. Processing these very diverse and high-value birds to an equally high standard as commercial broilers is a challenge Marel is glad to accept.

In Europe, slower-growing “concept chicken” are becoming ever more popular with consumers, who care increasingly about what they are putting in their shopping trolleys. Often, such concept chicken are also called organic, country, label, or biological.

Our grandparents’ chicken
The best-known concept chicken in Europe are the iconic Label Rouge, Loue and Poulet de Bresse products, reared and sold in France. Both Italy and Spain have their own local specialties, among which are Christmas capons in Italy. These birds are more like the chicken our grandparents remember, longer in the leg with narrower, more pointed breasts. Since the industrial broiler market took off many decades ago, most breeders have concentrated on producing birds, who put on the maximum amount of breast meat in the shortest

Opening sample vessels and pipetting liquid samples in the same workspace saves space in laboratories. This can now be achieved with the three-dimensional gantry EXCL from Festo, which has a small footprint for table-top devices and PCB-based motion control.

The three-dimensional gantry EXCL reduces purchasing, design and assembly costs for automated sample handling and liquid dosing in laboratory equipment. It is therefore ideal for analytical processes where sample vessels are to be opened and liquid samples need to be pipetted in the same workspace. The optional second Z-axis even enables two front ends, such as the rotary gripper module EHMD or the pipetting head DHOE, to be moved independently of each other.

Cooperation saves time and costs

Dosing, aspirating and controlling extremely small quantities of aggressive liquids and gases is not a problem with the media-separated solenoid valve VYKA from Festo.

The media-separated solenoid valve VYKA from Festo allows the precise dispensing of fluids and the control of liquid flows in manifold duct plates for so-called continuous flow applications. The excellent performance of this valve makes it suitable not only for laboratory applications, but also for the perfume and aroma industry as well as for packaging contact lenses.

For liquid and gas applications
The compact powerhouse VYKA doesn't only handle aggressive liquids, it is also perfect for gas applications thanks to its low leakage values. This is demonstrated by the helium test to which all valves are subjected after production. Customers with demanding requirements for the leak-tightness of valves, such as manufacturers of gas analysis equipment, can rely on VYKA.
