Clarification on PLAAF's Crash 🇨🇳

Soon after crash Indian media along with Indian retired military personnel started spreading "Fake News" that Taiwan has shot down PLAAF's Su-35 using THAAD missile defense system.

Fact check ☑

a. Taiwan doesn't has any THAAD system.

b. THAAD is purley ballistic missile defense system not anti aircraft system or Surface to Air missile (SAM).

c. PLAAF J-10A/B/S not Su-35 crashed in Mainland China.

c-1. Crash site: Indian social media users claimed that PLAAF jet was shot down in Taiwan and pilot was captured but truth is that accident happened 6km NW of Guilin, province Guangxi which is mainland china and news of pilot captured by Taiwan are fake.

"Guilin" (Site of crash) has a PLAAF airbase named "Nanning" which is part of Southern Theater command (STC). It houses 5Th Air Brigade of PLAAF. Currently J-10B/A/S and J-10S of serial numbers (61X6x) are stationed here.

So our investigation reveals that crash happened in mainland and due to technical issues the aircraft involved in crash is J-10B/A/S not SU-35.

incident will impact negatively: Ram Madhav

Galwan is very unfortunate. But India will continue to engage with China diplomatically and militarily, says BJP general secretary Ram Madhav in an interaction with Vasudha Venugopal. Excerpts

On Sino-Indian Relationship

We attempted cordial relationship with China, after the initial troubles in 2014 in Chumar. But we had Doklam in 2017, which too we sorted out. But the recent Galwan incident where our soldiers were killed is a very unfortunate landmark. Because after 1975, this is the first occasion we have had casualties. Till now, we have had border violations and standoffs, but no casualties on the spot. This incident will impact China negatively. After 1962, efforts have been made from both sides to reduce the antipathy against the Chinese. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried very hard to keep the equation on an even keel, and send across a message to the common man that things can be worked out with China. But now all those efforts get pushed back by many years. So, in that sense, China will be the biggest loser in terms of public perception in India. As far as India is concerned, we will continue to engage with China diplomatically and militarily. The brutality and barbarism that the Chinese army showed with our soldiers has caused a lot of resentment in Indian minds.

Future Confrontations

India does not want any future confrontations to occur. If you go by the official statements of the Chinese foreign ministry officials, we hear the same thing. But past experiences with China have not been great. We can't let our guard down, as despite our best efforts we have seen violations, in 2014 and in Doklam, and now, in 2020 in Galwan. So, definitely, India has to be watchful, on alert all the time with regard to China.

Galwan Dispute

One has to be clear that what we call the LAC or the Line of Actual control is not a demarcated line but a claimed line of territory, upon which there is no general agreement. However, over the years, there have been 20 rounds of negotiations between the two parties due to which large parts of the LAC have been agreed upon. But there are enough spots where we don't have an agreement, where both sides patrol. Areas like Galwan valley fall under that category, where there is no agreement on the demarcated line or perceived LAC. The confusion arises when you equate the LAC with the LOC, which is a demarcated line.

India’s Reading of China

In fact, it is because we read China right that we are being able to physically stall them now. That was never the case earlier. Since 1988 when Rajiv Gandhi as PM visited China after 1962, there have been many PMs who have signed six agreements, indulged in several negotiations in the hope that peace will prevail. When we last signed an agreement with the Chinese in 2013, their soldiers had already intruded into our land, almost 19 Kms. They pitched tents, and we did nothing. PM Narendra Modi has taken these acts of aggressions very seriously, and talked directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping. That is how things de-escalated. Now, it is not only about dialogue and negotiations, but also about strong ground posturing. In 2015 we removed their posts in disputed areas. During Doklam, we mobilised troops in large numbers, preventing them from pushing the tri-junction downwards. They asked us to withdraw, we didn't, until they removed the construction equipment. Our approach is not just dialogue and negotiations alone. It is also about strong ground posturing. We are standing very firm on the ground. What is happening at Galwan is because of this different approach.

Asymmetry of power between India and China

Warfare is different now. If you take merely the numbers, the defence spending of the US is 10 times more than China, but can we say there is asymmetry between them. Asymmetry in the 21st century is not about numbers, but about capability. There are countries that have satellites, but there are also countries with superior ground-based laser technology to jam them; missiles that turn military assets of the enemy into wasted assets. Capability is not necessarily in military terms alone. No one is talking about war here, but India is capable of taking challenges head on.

Boycott of Chinese goods

Atmanirbhar is reducing our dependence on imports. We have already started regulating investments and imports including from the neighbourhood countries like China. We are strengthening our economic base. But there is a strong anti-China sentiment among the people of India today. Not just in India, but according to a Pew Research report, the anti-China sentiment is growing across the world. What happened in Ladakh has fortified the sentiment in India.

Rahul Gandhi's "Surender Modi" comment

PM Narendra Modi's statement was deliberately misquoted and misinterpreted to cause confusion in the minds of many people in India. They have only helped China by giving it a handle. The PM was responding to a particular concern raised by leaders in the opposition, and his response was limited to Galwan valley. Those who played on it are harming India's long term strategic interest. It doesn't harm us politically, as we are sure the people of the country are with us.

Opposition's allegation that Indian government was in denial.

From the PM to Defence Minister to EAM to army chief, everyone in this government has come forward to speak. This was not what happened in 2013 when the Chinese were camping on our territory for several days, and all that the UPA government was doing was conduct secret negotiations. FM Salman Khurshid used to only say 'have faith in us.' Manmohan Singh gave benefit of doubt to China. The country was never informed of what the situation was, what was agreed upon. On the contrary we are now giving out regular official positions and also fighting on the ground. The war

Situation in Ladakh turns grim as China claims ‘sovereignty over Galwan valley’
‘China has entered 8-kms inside Pangong, things will not get settled easily': Chering Dorjay

=>The situation in Ladakh is turning grim as China claims sovereignty over Galwan Valley and according to the top ladakh leader, China soldiers have entered eight-kilometres inside Pangong on the Indian side.

At least 20 Indian army men were killed on Monday night after their clash with Chinese soldiers.

The clashes broke out after Indian army moved to remove a People’s Liberation Army tent set up near a position code-named Patrolling Point 14, inside territory on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control.

“I don’t think things will get settled easily. China is claiming sovereignty over Galwan. They have also entered eight kilometers inside Pangong on our side. They have also made permanent structures there. I don’t know whether things will be settled by talks or by small scale war. I think this stand-off will continue till Chinese troopers don’t vacate these places,” former Chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Chering Dorjay, told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

Dorjey, who was the minister in the Mehbooba Mufti-led cabinet in Jammu and Kashmir and recently resigned from the BJP said, “The commanders of both armies had decided they will retreat 2.5 kilometres from the existing position in Galwan. When Indian army personnel went there, the Chinese troopers were ready there and attacked our army with sharp edged weapons.”
The Galwan Valley area comes under Sub Sector North (SSN),
which lies just to the east of the Siachen glacier and is the only point that provides direct access to Aksai China from India.
Asked that a Chinese expert has linked the stand-off between Indian and Chinese army with abrogation of Article 370, he replied, “Yes some people link it with Article 370 because China has objected to it. China has also objected to construction of roads there.”

Twenty Indian Army men, including a Colonel, were killed in the clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley on Monday night, which is the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff between the two countries.
A large number of Indian and Chinese troops have been engaged in an eyeball-to-eyeball situation in Galwan Valley and certain other areas of eastern Ladakh for the last five weeks, including in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh.

Monday's face-off was the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers while over 300 Chinese army personnel were killed in the confrontation.

Meanwhile, China on Wednesday claimed that the sovereignty over the Galwan Valley area in Ladakh "always belonged to it" but underlined that Beijing does not wish to see "more clashes," after the militaries of the two countries were engaged in the biggest confrontation in over five decades.

At a briefing at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Spokesman Zhao Lijian said the "sovereignty of the Galwan Valley area has always belonged to China," echoing a statement of the Chinese military on Tuesday, opening up another dispute.

This is not for the first time that there has been a face-off between the Chinese and the Indian army on the LAC in Ladakh. On the intervening night of April 15 and 16, 2013, PLA crossed 19 kilometres deep inside the Indian Territory at Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sector on LAC in Ladakh and set up tented posts. The 20-day old standoff ended on May 5, 2013, when troops from both sides withdrew to the pre-incursion positions on the line of actual control.

On November 3, 2016, Indian and Chinese troops were locked in a tense standoff along the Line of Actual Control in the Demchok sector of Ladakh after the People Liberation Army (PLA) objected to the construction of a developmental project.
In 2012, the Chinese army forced the Jammu and Kashmir government to suspend the work on a prestigious irrigation scheme at the Kuyul-Thuksey area of Nyoma block in Leh district of Ladakh division.

In 2010, the Chinese army forced the Jammu and Kashmir government to suspend work on the passenger sheds which were being constructed near the Sino-Indo border in the Demchok area in Leh district of Ladakh region.

In 2011, Chinese troops crossed the border and threatened the nomads who were grazing their cattle near the border.

China claims sovereignty over Galwan Valley

Beijing: China on Wednesday claimed that the sovereignty of the Galwan Valley area in Ladakh “always belonged to it,” a day after the armies of the two countries were engaged in a violent face-off.

The External Affairs Ministry on Tuesday said the violent face-off between armies of India and China in eastern Ladakh was the result of an attempt by the Chinese side to unilaterally change the status quo in the region.

The ministry said both sides suffered casualties that could have been avoided had the agreement arrived earlier at the higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side.

On the situation at the China-India border both sides are having close communication with each other resolving this through diplomatic and military channels, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said.

“The over all border situation is stable and controllable,” he told correspondents to a volley of questions.

Twenty Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel, were killed in the clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades that has significantly escalated the already volatile border standoff between the two countries.

A large number of Indian and Chinese troops have been engaged in an eyeball-to-eyeball situation in Galwan Valley and certain other areas of eastern Ladakh for the last five weeks, including in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh.PTI

US Statement on India-China face-off in Ladakh.
“We are closely monitoring the situation between Indian and Chinese forces along the Line of Actual Control.
We note the Indian military has announced that 20 soldiers have died, and we offer our condolences to their families.
Both India and China have expressed a desire to de-escalate, and we support a peaceful resolution of the current situation.

What happened at Galwan on 15th, as per Shiv Aroor:

1. After Lt Gen-level talks 10 days ago, token disengagement had begun - few tents. Last week, a camp that had been removed by Chinese was brought back.

2. CO & group of men (unarmed) went to the camp to tell Chinese to follow disengagement plan, quickly came under attack with stones. Chinese soldiers assaulted with barbed wire clubs etc. CO grievously hurt, removed immediately. Remaining soldiers surrounded, held by Chinese.

3. By sunset, CO succumbs to injuries + unarmed Indian men still held by Chinese. Indian Major & more go to camp, armed with their own melee weapons. Come under attack, fight back hard. Casualties inflicted among Indian captive men + several on Chinese side too.

4. More Chinese troops arrive from nearby camp, surround 1st camp where fighting is still on. Fighting spreads, moves up ridge over fast-flowing Galwan River, several fall steep cliff onto rocks/into river during fighting. On hill feature overlooking, Chinese earthworks spotted.

5. Landslide like situation. A Chinese Brigadier arrives on site, orders troops back, and to pick up casualties.

6. Indian Army men retrieve bodies downstream in the darkness. Herculean task in that cold. Have to trek down etc. By morning several of the Indian men have succumbed.

7. Disengagement from this precise point has happened, but Chinese presence still in Galwan Valley. Brigadier & Colonel level talks have happened today. Situation remains volatile, tense.

8. Priority to calm troops as CO killed in action on a mission to simply talk.
