Anietie Essia, Uyo
In a grave environmental incident that unfolded just a week ago, the Village Head of Iba Oku in Uyo Local Government Area Eteidung Gabriel Mbeke , has fervently denied reports linking neighboring communities of Afaha Oku and Nduetong Oku to the recent oil spillage. He emphasized that the spillage has wreaked havoc on the economic stability and overall well-being of Iba Oku Village.
The oil spill, which extends offshore, has dealt a severe blow to the marine ecosystem, raising urgent concerns for the environment, wildlife, and the immediate local community. Eteidung Mbeke expressed apprehension over both short-term and long-term threats posed by the catastrophe.
He underscored the far-reaching economic repercussions, noting that vital industries such as fishing, tourism, and recreational activities now face jeopardy due to the compromised marine environment.
"The spill harbors potential health hazards for individuals who come in contact with tainted water, be it through consumption or direct skin exposure. The toxins within the oil can lead to a range of health issues, from skin irritations to respiratory complications," he warned.
Eteidung Gabriel Mbeke has implored the Federal and State Governments, along with other pertinent agencies, to take immediate action and address the crisis in Iba Oku village promptly.
Furthermore, an injunction has been enacted within the affected area, barring natives and other individuals from accessing the region until government intervention is underway. The community awaits swift action and relief in the face of this environmental calamity.
