My son said to me with a tone of arrogance as I made him stand there for a photo.

Unconditional love with discipline.

The cause & the punishment, actions & their effects. Kicking the donkey or throwing the dog a treat. Time-out from positive reinforcement or talking with reason. Our struggles are not moments solved by classical conditioning.

We are currently emphasizing accountability & facing consequences for wrongdoings. But, this situation is different; it is about discomfort. He wanted to go backpacking & the challenge was in carrying his own weight.

"The impediment to action advances action.
What stands in the way becomes the way."
— Marcus Aurelius

Summer Days

As I reflect on our summer camping trip from last year, I'm filled with a sense of nostalgia & longing. The landscape enveloped us in a warm embrace & the lush forests were alive with the symphony of nature. The streams & brooks sparkled in the golden light & the tapestry of green blanketed the plateau. A Luna moth rested while bees danced along the gentle breeze.

In that moment, we were grateful to witness such grandeur. It was as if the whole world had come alive to celebrate the beauty that surrounded us.

Spring Break flashback

Reminiscing last year's Spring Break camping trip & feeling grateful for the memories. From peaceful moments around the campfire to the small stream, it was reliving the trip all over again.

Not the trip I planned.

Nevertheless, there were moments of joy in between negotiating when to go home. Following a random dog upstream, discovering carcasses & trekking through mud. I had hoped to get lost in those moments.

We drove here to backpack, but we returned home instead.

It was hard to drive back all the miles it took to get here. It was cold & you were not having a good time. Begging me to reconsider spending four days in the wilderness. Where did I go wrong? You love learning about the creation of earth & once upon a time hiked with your old man. In hopes to instill a love for the outdoors. But it may be too late. Perhaps a phase or blatant obsession for the internet.

I know I need to take a step away from everything now & then. This was our way to escape the fast-paced weekly routines. Or maybe my way of just never dealing with them.

Never forget this...

Out of all the good times, he'll still remember the bad ones. The moments of anger, of uncontrollable temper & unforgiving rage. I swear I will not raise my voice the next time, every single time.

I am not the most spiritual man. Nevertheless, I read a quote recently, paraphrased by Naval, that resonates with how anger feels to me.

"Anger is a hot coal you hold in your hand while waiting to throw it at somebody."

I don't want to be the one burned.

Rainy day at the Visitor Center

Helped a box turtle cross the road, before meeting with the Ranger on another encounter. Made a possum puppet. Lastly, a presentation on skins & skulls. Playground & hikes in between activities. Richard kept us on a tight schedule. His obsession with time may or may not become a problem. I digress, future productivity guru.

Hike to the Tye River Overlook

Tributary of the James, strangely almost a right angle as a pose to a typical "y". On a clear day The Religious Range can been seen in the distance. Yet haze covered The Priest, revealing The Friar.

Camping trip on the James

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to go out with the entire family. Grateful for this rarity, to spend time together.

While I have been overthinking my why, I've realized whether or not I am posting for the wrong reasons. I had to make sure I would still be enjoying the outdoors, if it wasn't for likes. The more days I took, the easier it became to stay away.

The problem is, I terribly miss the social aspect of sharing & creating in general. Photographs are more or less forever, whereas moments are gone. This is why I obsessivly capture memories, the anxiety of forgetting. The fear of not having a nostalgic look into the past.

Remember building a snail habitat on the picnic table? Observing Jupiter, shining aside the moon? Fall camping aside the James? Your curiosity every chapter & so on. This is for you my son, more than anything.

Tomfoolery out there 🤺

We drove up Blue Ridge Parkway, to sleep at a trailhead. Gave us a night to view the stars & an early advantage on trail. A day hike, out & back. Stopping for all found icicles.

Flat ground to call home prior to dusk. ☀️

Rain rudely woke us from our sleep. Early in the morn we shoved all our gear in our backpacks, running for the hills. No view of first light at this hour, save dense fog. Regrettably didn't stay around to capture it passing.

If only I didn't forget the trekking poles to our trekking pole tent, we could have slept through the rain. All the same, nightfall the day before, feeling the cold meadow air, sleeping under the stars. Moments we both enjoyed living one night on said flat ground.

It's a golf ball... It's an Air Force station... It's a FAA radar antenna? 📡

This would be the night we slept under the stars. Forgot critical gear. Our trekking pole tent is just a tarp without our trekking poles. Thought about setting up a ridgeline or using sticks but the sun goes down so early. We regrettably decided to cowboy camp, waking up to rain flooding our gear.

Some nights are better than others. Nonetheless looking back, a good memory.

Pleasant views. ⛰

Planned on walking the loop, nevertheless we decided to make it an out & back. Giving us another opportunity for views of the surrounding mountains. The day prior we were welcomed by fog that quickly turned to rain, so we wanted to see what we missed.

Embracing childhood. ⚔

Crossed paths with the youngest person to hike the Appalachian Trail. Hiking its entirety as a family, let alone with a five year old, is inspiring. We have heard stories of the legends, now putting faces to the name .
