We are live! 🎨🙈🎉
After a week workshop working with York Art Gallery as part of we are so hyped to see all the hard work come together

Now on exhibition in York Art Gallery we are so excited to announce our brand new art installation

Again // while(true);

AI technology combined with surrealist approaches. 'Again' is an investigation into our perception of repetition, creating landscaped environments through a combination of analogue and digital collage.

The exploitation of AI allows a focus on process and intent, with no fixed boundaries, the unified compositions shift in emphasis and remain in transit, neither dependent on lasting objects, nor fixed locations.

The power of self-replication gives chaotic outputs, yet the context of each repetition informs the next. Through individual curation and guidance, the AI creates a surreal version of paradise for the viewer.

Meet the ai in action at York Art Gallery 🙌 open now

What an exciting week we had last week, seeing our creative self expression platform featured within the Metro.
A Free local newspaper that was a founding element of my (Laura) background, originally from Newcastle and dependent on the METRO itself for local transportation, and as you can probably imagine the Metro paper was always dotted around.

When I studied Fine Art & Photography at Newcastle College I remember finding the Metro either on the floor or left behind by someone and as all art students do, picking it up for art supplies or floor covers for painting. I'd always read the odd article that would raise my eyebrow; from business to the arts & culture.

Being offered a Mail Metro Media Package by the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses)
was an incredible opportunity it felt to give back to the paper that was essentially a source of creative inspiration during my studies including an incredible platform to encourage others to creatively express themselves.
Choosing THISISNOTAWORKOFART to be featured was an instinctive decision; a free, not for profit, socially driven and creatively expressive platform.

🔥 Hype 🔥
We are so thrilled to be part of supported artists,
along with an incredible creatively talented selection of Performance Artists to Puppetry Masters.

Slap York has values so close to our own, with a focus on the experimental and producing works in the fringes of traditional performance and arts.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events 👀

So we've delayed the launch for 3 weeks however we feel during these times, more than ever before, this type of platform would be something hopefully useful to allow people to creatively express themselves in any way shape or form.

Practically Creative presents:
THIS IS NOT A WORK OF ART
www.thisisnotaworkofart.com
Transcript: 'We see art in everything. We want to build a place to encourage self expression. We want to see anything you’ve made even if you think it’s not worth seeing. No matter who you are, where you are, what you do, how good or bad you think you are, if you want your name on it or not. This is a place for your thoughts, doodles, scribbles, half written poems, words in no particular order, a bit of music you tried to make, a drawing from an art class you tried that time. Send us ANYTHING'

WHY?
Because we know people that have made something that we think is interesting but they can’t see it’s value without comparing it to the world of art. They believe it has to be perfect otherwise it’s not good enough to even look at and typically destroy it. All we really want to do is encourage people to accept imperfection in the creative process and accept that anything; drawings, painting, music composition, writing, poetry etc is an iterative process of developing skills and techniques. You shouldn’t limit your self expression and creativity because you believe that you ‘aren’t good enough’.

∆ Contribute to a uncurated collection of creative expressions of any kind

∆ Become more aware of the importance of accepting imperfection in the process

∆ Stretch your limitations and allow yourself to be an amateur learning

∆ Continue to explore, experiment and express yourself no matter what anyone says

TRANSCRIPT We see art in everything. We want to build a place to encourage self expression. We want to see anything you've made even if you think it's not worth seeing. No matter who you are, where you are, what you do , how good or bad you think you

I hope it takes less than 31 years for someone to update this again.
Time is a major influence on art. Artistic creations, movements and periods, are reflections of the society at the time. When voices aren't heard, this reflection has gaps. Guerilla Girls made the original in 1989, working to expose sexual and racial discrimination in the art world, particularly in New York, and in the wider cultural arena.
The original list of artists was compiled from information provided by auction houses, and contained primarily white artists. In 1989, we did not have the internet. In 2020, racism and sexism are still fashionable.

Today I wanted to share with you our recreation, we wanted to take time to educate ourselves, explore the female artists of the 21st Century and as a female working within the Artistic industry to understand the barriers within my industry.
This is our updated list. 67 artists, one for each within the original. All Women of Colour.

Augusta Savage: the extraordinary story of the trailblazing artist

Augusta Savage was the first African American woman to open her own art gallery in America. This pioneering sculptor was an artist who spent her life battling against racial injustices in a world whose legacy of systemic racism still echoes in the contemporary art world today.

Her groundbreaking leaps forward for women of colour in the world of art might have been overlooked but a new exhibition hopes to correct that

Duality Kinetic Sculpture by David Roy

We've been exploring and reflecting on what we consider an "immersive experience". This work by David Roy is a wooden kinetic sculpture, manually wound and then set in motion. The asymmetrical design is mechanically and visually complex, producing vivid moving visuals, and running for 8 hours from a quick wind up. What do you think? 👀

I felt joyful when initially seeing the colours selected by the members of BYT - The variation selected shows the unique eye of each artist and when we collaborate the natural 'flow' of how we work together is inspiring. I decided to continue using the BYT chosen colours and see how I could represent that initial feeling. 🌈

the Bright Young Things team to pick their favourite Pantone colour (a very hard task) so we could put our own spin on showing our support for the incredible work our NHS staff and key workers are doing. The post is encouraging members of BYT to follow each other, grow their network, start conversations and use this time to get to know one another. Being at home doesn’t mean you have to be lonely.

We've been reflecting on our past experiences in work, and the projects that have brought us to where we are today as a - When Jared told me about his Software Engineer work, I was adamant I wanted to share. This the first computerised indoor trainer for British wheelchair athletes built in 2016, Jay designed and programmed the hardware and software integration. Using 2 TACX bicycle trainers and custom control software, the system allowed both wheels to have independent, accurate drive and resistance. The final product let wheelchair athletes compete in virtual races, practice courses, provided training programmes, ghost racing, and bespoke visualisations and data capture for individual athletes, and historic graphing, including the power generated by the athletes.

Repost @ Bright Young Things York 💕
"Time for our last three designers! First up today is the wonderful duo that makes up , Laura and Jared. ‘Pop culture, advertisements, mainstream, and capital. These are all aspects of commodification—the act of taking something’s original form and commercialising it, turning it into an object of trade and capital. Commodification is socially constructed and involves businesses taking things such as identity and language and turning aspects of them into a service or good. Commodification plays a large role in how society views subcultures and deviance. ‘
Find their full design houses at the wonderful Just Smile Designs on Bootham from 21st March - you might recognise the shop from Spark with the amazing koala painted on the shop front!"

Rest in Peace Ulay
Having spent my University studies extensively researching your works, obsessing over this duo and writing 16000 word essays. Heartbreaking news 💔
My original exposure to Ulay was through the collaborative works by - Rest Energy is a 1980 performance art piece created, enacted, and recorded by performance artist duo Marina Abramović and Ulay in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Four minutes in duration, Abramović has described it as one of the most difficult pieces she has ever done, saying I was not in charge.

We are absolutely in awe of this super clever marketing campaign by we just had to share it. 😍
Making the invisible visible.
Their bottle is so iconic, that our brain needs very little help in identifying it - just a logo and a title, and you can see it.
A smart and simple campaign, and one that could translate easily to social.

3 years ago (this month) I was visiting Tate Modern, London - It was my first exposure to Olafur Eliasson's work 'Yellow vs purple (2003)'. Known for making works that explore the artistic and scientific characteristics of light and colour, as a digital and darkroom photographer working with light constantly his works really caught my interest. Having now seen Netflix series and getting to really see into his process and more expanded portfolio I am now in love! Perspex here I come

We are passionate digital and darkroom photographers 🖤
For me the printing process is part of the magic of photography. It's that magic that can be exciting, disappointing, rewarding and frustrating all in the same few moments in the darkroom. - John Sexton
