I have just discovered that there exists a heathen sect which creates so-called trifles without jelly. Let me. go on record to say that this is not a trifle.
A true trifle consists of stale cake or trifle sponges liberally doused in a sweet sherry - a Pedro Ximenez for preference, mind - and a jelly made with the juices from the fruit as well as water, topped by a goodly layer of thick and creamy custard (whether it be Birds or properly assembled is a matter for further discourse), all of which is then topped with the cream of your choice - so long as it is real cream, I care not whether it be whipped, clotted our pouring, just so long as it's good.
Accept no substitutes, and disavow the heathens...
