Guildhall Street has a rich history tied to the town's development and its linen industry. The street was formally established in 1752 as part of efforts to improve and expand Dunfermline's urban layout, replacing older lanes like Christison Hill Lane.
The Guildhall building, located at the corner of Guildhall Street and High Street, is a key landmark. Designed by Archibald Elliot in the neoclassical style, it was built between 1807 and 1811 as a guildhall and linen exchange. This reflects Dunfermline's prominence in linen production during the 19th century. Over time, the building served various purposes, including as a courthouse, inn, job centre, and now a public house.
Guildhall Street also hosted other notable establishments like the City Theatre and Music Hall, which opened in the mid-19th century but later declined due to competition from newer venues. The street remains a significant part of Dunfermline's heritage.
