On average, if the trees are planted correctly and of good quality, over 90% of them will thrive. External factors such as wildfires and extreme heat can impact these numbers. With some natural regeneration, all those trees will flourish into a dense and robust forest.

Answer : A shovel can typically last for several seasons. In the past five years, I’ve only used three shovels, each of which I planted an average of 300,000 to 400,000 trees with. They didn’t break or show any signs of damage, but the blade gradually became shorter due to constant contact with rocks. Eventually, it became more practical to replace them.

FAQ #26 : Why is planting trees such a high paying job?
Answer : First of all it’s a really hard and physically demanding job, it should definitely be paid more haha but seriously, Tree planting is a seasonal job where workers are getting paid piece rate ($ per tree planted). Although the average planter might do on average only one season maybe two. Therefore, the prices we are getting paid in the current industry are mainly prices for rookie planters to obtain minimum salary quickly and easily. These are mostly the same prices for experienced planters who can plant between 3-5 times faster than a beginner planter. That is why, after a few years, when planters developed speed and efficiency that the tree price actually allows them to make really good money.

Answer : It really depends on the project I’m working on, but last winter I actually spent some time in Australia planting trees! There’s no tree planting in Canada during the winter, so I need to travel a bit if I want to keep planting.

Answer : I’ve done it before to see my old plantation and was happy to see growing healthy trees! Although most of the trees I planted are in remote location hardly accessible and it would be complicated and very costly to go back visit those grown forests. I’ll make sure to capture some videos next time I visit some trees I planted in the past!

Answer: Yes, it can vary significantly. Most of the land I’ve planted this summer is similar, but my techniques differ based on the terrain. When the land is rocky, I maintain a slower pace and avoid hitting my shovel too hard to prevent injury. In softer soil, I work faster and take more risks while throwing the shovel since it penetrates easily. Additionally, my approach adapts based on whether the land is clear or obstructed, the ease of walking on it, and my desired pace for the day. It’s all about finding a rhythm that suits the conditions, and I may switch between taking it easy and pushing myself as needed.

FAQ #24 : Is there any tool available to avoid bending over every time?
Answer : Yes, there is actually a tool where you can put the tree in a tube and plant it in the ground without bending over with the help of a mechanical release. Although, where we are planting trees, there’s a lot of variations in the land such as rocks, roots, stumps and so on. These things would actually make it really hard to insert the tool into the ground and release the tree since it’s a lot bigger than our conventional shovel. Sometimes we need to wiggle our way into opening a hole and it would not be possible with the tool. If we were to have really good land such a sand all the time, we would potential to use such tool!
