It's the passion for me!
Congrats!🍾 to afro-q***r playwright Donja Love for receiving the Terrence McNally Award given by .
From the -
Terrence McNally was unflinching in his quest to unearth the truth and create a softer space for those on the margins,” said Love in a statement released by PTC. “The same can be said for Black people living with HIV and those who’ve passed due to AIDS-related illness. We know our lives matter; we also know that our stories matter, too. Access and resources, which we’re seldom offered, are important in our stories being told. With winning this award, I can’t help but think that Terrence McNally’s legacy and the theater community agree. For that, I am deeply grateful.”
Love is a Southwest Philadelphia native who now lives in New York. According to PTC, “his work examines the forced absurdity of life” for those like himself who are Black, q***r, and HIV-positive. In his application for the award, he described What Will Happen to All That Beauty? as “a long-overdue love letter to my community.”

Written & directed by Robert Townsend, Meteor Man was released in 1993. This role is only the second black superhero in film history with the first being, Abar, the First Black Superman (1977). Marvel produced a six issue limited edition series where Meteor Man meets Spider-Man and Night Thrasher. This film is comprised of several notable black actors as well as rap artists.

When asked how the film holds up today, Townsend offers, “I think it does hold up because some of the themes in there are still prevalent in society today. Things like communities banding together against gangs, against violence, working with the police, these are certain things that haven't gone away. When I look at Black Lightning and Luke Cage, they're like my cinematic sons. They've taken on cleaning up the Hood, like what Meteor Man was doing trying to unite the gangs and get the community together. I think people still laugh, it's still funny, but then in terms of the ultimate message that we can empower our own communities if we work together, I think that theme is still there and still needed.”

Cheers to Robert Townsend and this Iconic Bla(Q)!! Performance.
