Stewart County High School Hosts “Self-Care Fair”

The Stewart County High School hosted a self-care fair this past Thursday evening, Apr. 20. The event- which had been previously advertised as a way to promote mental health awareness in the schools- was put together by the Stewart County Coordinated School Health staff, including Elaine Jackson (Coordinated School Health Director), Cheryl Wooten (Project Assistant), and Nancy Spiers (Family Resource Center Director). Tables adorned with purple tablecloths bordered the gym floor, as well as vendors with purple ribbons affixed to their shirts. Although this fair was organized to focus on self-care, it was also taken as an opportunity to show awareness for “Month of the Military Child”, and staff had also “Purpled Up! For Military Kids” for this on April 19th.

The event originally had 21 vendors signed up to attend, although approximately 14-15 ended up setting up. The counselors from each school had a table, as well as the Family Resource Center, Safe Baby Court, CASA, Stewart County Prevention Coalition, The Center for Family Development, and more. Families had the opportunity to visit with each table, and learn more about the tools and resources within the community to support them with their mental health concerns. Alex Berta with Dover Public Safety also provided a “mini”-presentation about the Dangers of Social Media. Berta will be providing the more in-depth version May 27, 2023 at the Visitor’s Center from 12-4. This a free event open to all members of the community.

After reviewing the statistics from the videos we have uploaded to our YouTube channel, it's interesting to find a very low percentage of 44 year olds and younger that are interested in local government and meetings.

Help us help you; what would make you want to be more educated in these areas? Let us know if there are formats you prefer or platforms we are not on that you prefer. We are looking to educate everyone in our county and this includes the younger generations as well.
