Leslie founded The Holistic Lifestyle Method because she knows what it feels like to be in a never-ending cycle of talk therapy, an overthinking mind, lack of good quality sleep, and not feeling comfortable in her own skin. She struggled in these areas for many years.

She knows what it’s like to feel lost and question who she is, what she truly wants, and what lights her up. Many years ago, she was engaged to an intelligent, artistic, beautiful man until she realized that there was only space for him in the relationship. For years, she allowed herself to play small and let her personal needs go unfulfilled.

By the end of the relationship, she knew that she had to take bold action and commit to radical self-exploration, self-care, and profound healing to find her way back to herself. The last thing she thought she needed then was creativity and sensuality. Still, as she tapped into those natural forces that are alive within us, she bloomed into the even more vital, more empowered, and playful woman she is today.

It's the last conversation of 2021, and we're bringing it back to something that has become so crucial to my life: self care and compassion.

Leslie Porter has been teaching various styles of yoga, pilates, and meditation and has been a somatic counselor for over 20 years. Her superpowers are her empathy, humor, and intuition. She has led retreats and workshops all over California and has been featured in BBC News, USA Today and various podcasts for topics like stress and sleep. She speaks French and loves the people in her life, travel, red wine, and all forms of dark chocolate.

I won't lie, this week was kind of rough.

Most weeks have their ups and downs, but this one included a bad reaction to my vaccine booster which resulted in full body aches and a couple days worth of nausea. For someone who likes to be doing things, being unable to even sit up for a day was tortuous, and the dread of feeling behind on tasks that I wanted to achieve added another layer of discomfort that I probably didn't need.

During these kinds of moments I have learned to pause and ask myself who is that discomfort serving? Are the expectations of these tasks driven by me or is it simply the people pleasing side of me that is crying out for me to push my body through the rest it so clearly desires?

I have gotten better at deciding on the latter, but I admit, that is not always the case. I know that I have care and compassion for days and I know the impact I can have on so much around me when I allow those values to lead my actions. What I need reminding of is that I deserve to apply that same kind of care and compassion to myself, and not just when I'm sick. In fact, I can become sick from putting myself second or last to others, and then I'm really no good to anyone.

Self care is not selfish, and it's also way more than fancy meals and face masks. Self care is about making sure that I am not losing myself in my service to others or the tasks that are required of me. It is making sure that I am taking time to acknowledge when I am exhausted or hurt, whether that be physically, mentally, or emotionally, and allowing myself understand why things make me react the way they do. This also makes conversations like I had with Leslie Porter so important. If you want to know exactly what I mean, make sure to come back here in an hour to find out!

This week's conversation is deeply personal, and with any deep, personal conversations, it is always important to have them with people you trust and feel safe with.

Kim Cox is a Parenting and Stress/Anxiety Specialist working at a group practice in West Los Angeles, CA, with teens, parents, families, adults and in professional settings where she leads stress management workshops for leadership and/or their teams. Kim obtained her License in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2019 after working in clinical settings and in senior management positions in clinical programs for over a decade. Kim self-identifies as a person living life with ADHD and shares her insights and her experience in how this impacted her development, sense of self and how her identity as a neurodivergent person has become one of empowerment in later adulthood, differing from the more disempowered narrative throughout childhood, adolescenthood and young adulthood. Kim is an advocate for kids, teens, adults and families with a person who experiences neurodiversity and wants to support the changing narrative that neurodiversity and neurodivergence is not bad, just different; therefore, there is a need for society and the systems within it to adapt more flexibly to those who experience life this way as well as an importance for the person and their support system to continue with shifting the narrative away from disordered and towards tolerance of differences and diversity. Neurodiversity includes people who identify with labels such as ADHD, ASD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Synaesthesia, schizophrenia and like disorders, OCD, Bipolar disorders, Borderline and Antisocial personality disorders, Dissociative Disorders and more.

I have always known that I think differently than other people around me.

All throughout school, I was a conundrum because even though I was "gifted and talented", I never actually made it into higher level anything. I loved the challenge of reading above my grade level, I could write like an old english poet, and I could solve math problems in my head that my teachers would need to pause at...but my test taking skills were always crap. I also had this incredible habit of failing every subject at different points in the semester, and then coming back to clinch straight A's by the year's end.

I remember in middle school they split us up into "teams" A, B, and C to help organize us into our classes and schedules. They told us that it was random and had nothing to do with what kind of students we were, but team A always had a lot of athletes and rich kids in it, team B would win awards and scholarships all the time, and then there was the rest of us in team C. Most team C classes weren't even in the main building, they were in "portable" or temporary structures that had been set up by the track and field pitch and had to be constantly updated to include things like heat and air conditioning.

When I was really little, I was labeled a daydreamer who needed to pull my nose out of books a little more to succeed. In middle school, even though I was super creative and artistic, I needed to focus on actually studying more. Once I got to the end of high school and into college, I was a "lost cause" and "it was a shame because I had so much potential".

I am constantly working on deconditioning myself from the idea that I will always be a failure when the truth is actually that traditional systems like school and 9 to 5 work are just not built for people like me. The fact that there are so many people like me is mind blowing and even though our struggles are different, so much of it is the same.

This realization is why conversations like the one I had with Kim are so important. I hope that in sharing our stories there will be others who won't have to spend 30 years learning that they are not failures, and that they are not alone.

See you all back here in an hour.

03/12/2021

Most of you don't know this, but I had originally intended for this show to be about the fashion industry and its impact on the world. I wanted to highlight companies who are doing the research and the work to make things better while demonstrating how we as consumers can demand better from our favorite brands.

With the pandemic I realized that as much as I love fashion, there were other topics that deserved to be highlighted and that the platform I was building could be useful to so much more than just one space.

While this platform is still in its infancy really, I am so proud of what it has become, and I feel so privileged to bring on this very in depth discussion to start rounding out our first year. There is so much wrong that I and many others have witnessed while working in or around the fashion industry, but there are also so many people who are working to change that narrative.

Nicole and I get into the nitty gritty and it truly felt like a full circle moment for me to have this conversation. See you all back here in a few hours!

The Green Man is a haven where ancestral spiritual knowledge and the practices known as the Old Ways are not only kept alive, but given space to grow and evolve. They believe a key to spiritual evolution is diversity, so they welcome people of all paths and persuasions. They are family-owned and operated by experienced spiritual, magical, metaphysical, and occult practitioners, which sounds pretty serious, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, they take their work seriously, but not themselves. True to the Old Ways, hospitality is important to them, but they won’t proselytize, give unsolicited advice, or hover in an effort to appear helpful. If you need help or have a question, please ask. The Green Man is here for your spiritual journey.

Stories with unexpected twists and turns seem to be all the rage these days. But what about a story where even the writers don’t know what’s coming?

Meet The Story Symphony – the collaborative fiction podcast with each chapter written by an entirely different person.

The Story Symphony was started by Adrian Yeung, from Melbourne, Australia. The idea for the format for the podcast struck Adrian one day while he was listening to a fiction podcast and thinking nostalgically about round-robin storytelling activities back in high school drama, and suddenly thought... Why not start a round robin storytelling podcast? And thus, with no prior experience with producing podcasts but with a tonne of passion for fiction writing, Adrian embarked on a mad quest to create an indie audio drama with an unmistakably Australian twist.

You can find The Story Symphony on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts, and don't forget to follow for updates on the upcoming season!

Our Guest this week is Adrian Yeung who is a writer and creative genius behind The Story Symphony.

Adrian is a Melbourne-based marketing professional with a passion for creating things. He enjoys reading classics and political memoirs, but hi favorite books of all time are the Just! series by Andy Griffiths. He loves his lighthearted narrative style, and reading these books as a kid is what first motivated Adrian to want to become a writer.

Creativity is one of those things that I have always been told I possess in abundance, and I take a lot of pride in that.

Collaboration is something which I strive for, however I don't always know if I'm doing it right.

The ability to collaborate creatively is a skill that does not always feel natural to someone like me because I have always looked to creativity as an outlet to express myself. Inviting someone else to input and work with me in that means giving up control of things that oftentimes feel deeply personal. With that said, there is so much beauty and potential in working with others and in being open to new perspectives and processes.

Sitting down with Adrian to talk about how he harnesses this openness and presents it to people was such a privilege. His podcast is a fascinating listen and a worthwhile look at the amazing things that can come from sharing the creative burden.

I'll see you all back here in an hour to get the full lowdown!

01/10/2021

Being able to call myself "divine" is a new thing for me. Even now it feels strange to talk about it because for such a long time the context around the word for me has not necessarily been positive.

In my past, the term "divine" has been used to describe beings, people, or ideas that are above me. We are less than "divine" because we are human, I am less than "divine" because I don't go to church, etc. No offense to the powers that be, but I can say with confidence that my thinking around this has dramatically shifted.

I now realize that being divine is not something you strive for-you are, we are, I am divine simply by being. Our existence in this time space is divine no matter what people say or think. There is no such thing as less than divine unless you think it.

This realization made my conversations with Keisha that much more profound and I can't wait for you all to tune in. See you at 3 pm!

17/09/2021

Hey Everyone,

I've been away for a minute unexpectedly, and for that I apologize. I'm here now to give you a bit of an update and hope you'll stick with me while I find my footing to bring you content again.

As with any new thing, there will be growing pains and lots of instances when it is prudent to step back and evaluate how things are going. I love finding amazing individuals and bringing their voices and their stories to an audience who is kind, compassionate, and open to holding space for them. Many of these people are also professionals in fields that are driven by the stories and experiences they share, and so I am more than happy to help raise awareness for their work when I bring them on.

When I ask my guests to come on, I generally do so (virtually) face to face and after a conversation where we are all able to get to know each other a bit better. Over the course of the last year, this has largely worked and made the experience of bringing them to you, my audience, feel less transactional. A few weeks ago, amidst a slew of technical difficulties that were frustrating in their own right, the tune of these initial conversations began to change. This did not sit right with me, so I took it as a sign to pause and reflect on how, and whom, I was reaching out to.

Long story short, although I have not been here, there is lots of work happening behind the scenes so that I can once again bring you content that resonates with what I had always intended for this show.

I'll see you for a new episode coming October 1st. You won't want to miss it.
