😁 WE"RE BACK 😁
was the venue of our long-awaited return; fortunately, it did not disappoint! I went for a traditional meat pie (pictured 3rd) and the popular peppered pig pie (pictured 1st).
The flavour of both pies was spot on and had me hooked from the first bite. The traditional meat pie is such an underrated pie because, quite often is done poorly, this one was not. A great ratio of mince to gravy and most importantly one of the tastiest meat pies I've had.
The peppered pig consists of a house-made pepper gravy with roasted capsicum, peppercorns, and slow-cooked pork. The ingredients worked magnificently together, with the stars for me being the pepper gravy, which immediately gives the taste buds a hit, and the well-cooked and nice-sized pork chunks.
The pies were structurally sound and while the pastry was a good thickness and crispy on top, the top and bottom bakes were slightly underdone.
Overall Scores 🎯:
Traditional Meat Pie - 8/10
Peppered Pig Pie - 8/10

P.s - Fumblestilskin has recently turned 1 and is part of an array of amazing bakeries and food outlets on Beach Road, Christie's Beach, many of which I have reviewed previously. I do want to give a shoutout to though. I have been loving their pizza, one of the best in the South!

Thanks to one of the GBO alumni for sending this BEAST of a Beef and Mushy pie through all the way from Gladstone, SA.
Loved the simplicity and to the point review:
"Big pie, pastry was a bit soft and gravy was a touch runny too. But nice flavor and good chunks of beef/mushroom!"
Always happy to have reviews sent through (I have a couple more sitting there), especially for Mushroom pies because mushrooms are the WORST! Surely everyone agrees with me?!

'Your Neighbourhood Bakery'
TWELVE...YES 12. That's how many locations Dulwich Bakery has in SA and I visited their newest store at Woodcroft. For the locals, this store has replaced Better Bake Woodcroft.
First impressions: The store is great, really inviting and a nice place to dine in, while the service was excellent which is always pleasing.
I branched out and got 2 different pies. A Tuna 🥧 and a Chunky Pepper 🥧. Both of these weren't perfect but were solid.
The Tuna pie was good to try but an interesting mix with the potato on top. The crispy potato was the highlight and the pie was cooked quite well. Any Tuna pie lovers out there?
I found the pastry on the chunky pepper to be not as well cooked. However, the meat if anything was not as tender as I would have liked. I did ❤ the flavour, a great amount of spice and aroma.

🥮CHILLI, STOUT AND LAMB PIE🥮
A collaboration between and , this beauty combines two of my favourite things... Beer 🍻 and Pies.
My previous experience at this bakery was really good, so I had high expectations, and for $7.50 for this pie my expectations probably went up. I tell you what...this was a pie Bo Peep herself would be happy to eat, bloody excellent!
The mixture of flavours was on point and the light seemed to glisten off the dark 'stouty' colour of the filling. Pastry was beautiful and crispy, and fortunately for me but too much chili. All in all, well put together.
TOTAL SCORE 🎯 - 9/10
We also picked up a curry lentil pie. You can see a beautiful mix of colours in there supporting the lentils, including carrot, peas and sweet corn 🌽. There was a definite curry taste as you'd expect which I would describe as a 'mildish' curry flavour.
So cool supporting these 2 local small businesses. Next step, get me some beers to try 👍

🔴ATTENTION BISCOFF LOVERS🔴
Biscoff addict, and I headed to - the legendary purveyors of beautiful vegan goodness. Pictured we had:

🍪 BISCOFF DEEP DISH COOKIE
🍩 BISCOFF AND WHITE CHOCOLATE FILLED DONUT
🍩 CHOC BROWNY DONUT

All products were unbelievable but I would definitely have to put the Biscofff Deep Dish Cookie up there with the Snackers Donut as my favourite item for Cherry Darlings and one of my top Sweets. Simply put by Rachel...it was JUST DELICIOUS!
If you get the Biscoff and White Choc Filled donut, head straight homeb and chuck it in the microwave for about 30s, makes it that perfect melt in your mouth winter treat.
The Browny Donut was HUGE! It was so heavy but so fluffy and light to eat. I love taking that first bite of something and just going WOW and that's what this was start to finish. My advice... slow down and appreciate it (this is not my strong suit).
P.s well done SA on looking after each other and supporting local businesses during this time ✅

CHEESEBURGER PIE

As cheeseburger pies go, I didn't leave disappointed with this creation. In saying that, I'm not a huge fan of the idea, what are your thoughts on cheeseburger pies?
I loved the crispiness of the pastry on top, as you can see in pic 2, a beautiful colour. Unlike the first cheeseburger pie I had from another establishment, this didn't look unappetising. I appreciated the mixture of textures including the 'meatball' patty, the mince, the pickles, sauce and cheese.
I would have liked the cheese to be melted more thoroughly on top of the other ingredients and same goes for the pickles who were shoved in one side.
Sausage Roll was beautiful! I believe it was a beef, cheese and bacon one, but happy to be corrected. Sizeable, cooked well, flavousome... Do I get on more sausage rolls now in winter ❄️?

Why not start July with the June Donut of the Month from Port Elliot Bakery 😂.
Guest reviewers, Rachel (wife of the ) and Janine ventured to the Fleurieu before the end of June to sample the "Blissful Biscoff" and a chicken and mushroom pie. Here are there thoughts:
Rachel 🍩 - This donut was so good it inspired me to go to the shops to buy Biscoff spread. The star of the donut was the caramelised biscuit crumb which complemented the cream filled centre. The sweetness of the crumb balanced beautifully with the cream. I think that this needs to be a regular donut, just looking at the picture makes me hungry 🤤🤤 (sorry folks, no longer available)
Janine 🐔🍄 - First chicken and mushroom pie I've ever had that is served in a aluminium foil tin. Filling was delicious and very creamy. Filled with lots chunks of chicken and flavoursome sauce. Plenty of mushrooms in this pie compared to others I've ever had. Definitely would come back and grab another one.

WELL... It's certainly been a minute between posts!
For this pie-venture (🤫) I went to Cafe Desto at Trott Park (after I went to Hallett Cove bakery and it was closed).
Cafe Desto had a small range of pastries including a poutine pie, which is one of the crazier pie ideas I have seen. I went for a Steak, Cheese and Bacon pie and a Beef Sausage Roll.
Both items were clearly home made, fresh and well cooked which gets a ✅ of approval. The steak was quite nice and tender but not overly flavoursome. The only cheese and bacon in the pie though was, well, not in the pie. For me, the filling should be a combination of those ingredients and not just placed on the top for garnish.
The sausage roll was more to my liking. It had a unique taste, which some may not appreciate in a traditional beef sausage roll. In saying that, certainly not my favourite. Overall, happy to give these a go, but won't be rushing back.

Cauliflower and Broccoli Pie - Silver Award Winner
The folks at The Bakehouse Aldinga were not happy that this pie only won a Silver and to be fair, based on taste this is all GOLD! I almost didn't get it because, I'm not a big vege pie man, or a vege person at all but boy oh boy, this was quality.
Lets keep it short, sharp and shiny. Loved the crispy cheese on top, added crunch to the softer ingredients inside. Comfortably completed the pie stack challenge which is a sign of great structure. The most important thing however for those of us who love our pies is the taste and this would be one of the best tasting pies I have ever had. LOVED IT.

WILD RABBIT PIE - Silver Award Winner
On National Pie Day, I had to review a couple of South Australia's award-winning pies from the .australia Best Pie Competition. I visited where I had an awesome experience previously and this was no exception!
I would describe this rabbit pie by relating it to somewhat of a creamy rabbit stew. If you do not like rabbit, don't write this off immediately as it wasn't a gamey taste. The rabbit was almost too much of a bystander in this pie as it was surrounded by beautifully cooked, fresh vegetables.
The pastry and ingredients were cooked perfectly which unfortunately has become a rare occurrence on GBO. I would give this pie a solid 8 out of 10 which is handy but was well overshadowed by the 2nd award-winning pie I consumed...Stay tuned for that post later today.

THREE DOLLAR BAKERY MEAT PIE
if you had told me before that I could pay $3 for a pie, I'd be all over it, no worries in the world. However, I like to think I'm more educated now and when I saw that price, alarm bells were ringing!
The pie was presented nicely, the top sealed on well appeared nicely cooked and a nice size ✅. As I cut in, I could tell the pastry was undercooked, this would partly be due to its thickness. The meat/gravy was a nice colour... But I was still concerned, yet extremely hungry.
The meat gravy mix was more of a gravy mix and you can see two random chunks of mince in the edge of the pie. Not the nicest texture but surprisingly tasty!
Would I go out of my way to get this pie again... NO. Would I happily pay $3 and eat it again if I was there... Yeah, I'm not fussy. Anyone else tried this from Hang Bakery before?

Probably my most viewed Instagram story, this little question got viewers intrigued and it certainly amazed me.
$9.50, yes, you read that right, $9.50. Chuck a bluey down for this and you're getting 50c back! The Bahn Mi and Meat Pie were from Hang Bakery on Henley Beach Road. Of the 92 (NINETY TWO!) people who responded since yesterday, only 27 picked the right price, with most thinking $13.50 seemed fair.
For those playing at home, the combination Bahn Mi cost $6.50 (and was quality!) And the meat pie was $3 (I'll leave that review for later).

What a PIE STACK!!
I'm loving my pie stacks at the moment. I think the ability to stack says a lot about the structural integrity of the pie and I haven't found much better than Banana Boogie.
The first pie is the beef, cheese and bacon and the second stack is my NUMBER ONE ranked meat pie!

ANZAC BISCUIT CHEESECAKE

Was able to pop back into Bakery on O'Connell The other day and score myself a slice of their special ANZAC Biscuit Cheesecake. Cheesecake is by far my favourite sweet.
The base was excellent and such a great idea, the base of a true Anzac biscuit. It was soft enough to compliment the flavours of the cheesecake and I thought both parts of the cheesecake complimented each other really well.
The texture was very smooth and was nice and creamy. Overall a very happy treat to go with my mum's lasagna last week 😂.
On a side note, how do you like your ANZAC BISCUIT? Soft and chewy or hard and crispy?

🥧Creamy Chicken Pie🥧

The last pie I had from Perryman's was a Lamb, Roast Potato and Rosemary Pie which was one of, if not the tastiest pie I have ever had. This Creamy Chicken Pie was no different!
Score 🎯: 9.5/10
As you can see by the score, I was a happy man. I found this pie really hard to fault, the only thing I could think of is that it was a bit small but for the quality of the pie and for only $5.40 (I believe), I'm not complaining. The chicken was the clear winner, STUNNING, vegetables perfectly cooked and creamy without being a pile of sludge. You bloody ripper Perryman's.

This bakery in the heart of the Lonsdale commercial precinct is a tradie heaven! Consistently filled with fluro, you can see why. Big pies, great prices.
First pie displayed here is the Steak, Cheese and Bacon Pie. Cost $5.90 and was MASSIVE! It filled out my whole GBO chipping board logo...
The absolute highlight though was the amount of beautifully cooked steak that was in the pie, an abundance of goodness! The cheese was beautifully melted throughout the pie also. Only negative I had was there was more bacon on the top of the pie than inside of it. Overall 😁 with this one!
The last couple of pictures were the plain meat pie. Cost $5.10 and again, massive! I wasn't a huge fan of this pie however, so stick with the steak!

Ventured down to last weekend to tuck into some goodies, including their donut of the month, THE NEAPOLITAN DONUT 🍩!
The donut was filled with chocolate 🍫 custard and strawberry 🍓 cream, topped with white chocolate icing, white chocolate shards and a square of Neapolitan Chocolate.
As with many of the Donut of the Month's that are around, I found this had so much going on, particularly for me. Indivually I liked the elements that compromised the donut, imparticular the strawberry cream. Interestingly, others found the cream and custard flavourless. Just goes to show, different tastes for all. The 🍩 was a great size and I was able to get that down comfortably after digging into my favourite chips and gravy!!
For those that haven't tried, the Chips and Gravy at Vili's is second to none! It's the first item I choose to devour on my visits and never lets me down. Beautifully crisp chips, soft potato on the inside and the most amazing gravy...a must 😁

🥧Steak, Cheese and Bacon🥧
Location:
I haven't had a Steak, Cheese and Bacon in a LONG time and I'm certainly glad I got this one. Highlights for me were the crispy pastry, you can see the colour and flakiness of the pastry in the pictures, Delicious! I loved the beautifully melted cheese which was placed above the steak and bacon and you can see a generous serving of bacon also. For me there was a great mix of gravy and fillings, others may have liked more steak.
The only negative I had was that the pie was quite soft. It didn't fall apart on me but was somewhat of a battle as I ate.
🎯 Overall Pie🥧 Rating: 8.45/10

Port Elliot Bakery
WHITE CHRISTMAS 🎄🎄
Well I snuck down to Port Elliot Bakery for the . A White Chocolate Cheesecake Filling, topped with a White Tim Tam and finished with a White Chocolate Lindt Ball 😲.
For me the donut 🍩 was a winner, not because of the White Christmas topping/filling (love the idea btw) but because of the amazing light dough. As soft as a pillow after a busy day!
Soft, light and fluffy donuts are a must. As this as their base, it comes down to taste preference. In this instance the White Chocolate Cheesecake Filling, coupled with the Tim Tam and Lindt Ball tipped my sweet tooth over the edge.
Very nice in small amounts but as always with a Port Elliot Bakery Donut of the Month, this was huge! You certainly get your money's worth 💸
Last day to get one today so get on your bike 😉
P.S - The staff and bakers should be commended for their work and patience during these holidays. Crazy lines @ Port Elliot Bakery

🎖BEST PASTY IN AUSTRALIA🎖

10 times...YES 10 times this traditional pasty from Orange Spot Bakery has won the title of Australia's best pasty and I can see why. To be honest I found it hard to fault!
⏩ Swipe to see how full this pasty was 😁
The thing that stood out for me was the pastry, golden
brown and baked to perfection. There was a mountain of filling, yet the pastry was thin and light and housed the meat and veg expertly. Temparature was spot on and because of the size I struggled to finish my jam berliner after (review to come).
To sum up don't win an award 10x if you don't know what you're doing!

Thanks for those that have been a part of the GBO journey this far. Enjoy your day, cherish the good moments and eat a bloody pie!

🥧 Meat Pie 🥧
As you can see this pie was a really nice size and for $5 you're certainly not breaking the bank.
Don't often talk about temperature but this was spot on, able just to dig straight into the meaty goodness 😁. The structural integrity of the pie was also a ✅ for me.
Pastry... Although an even thickness around, I found some bits a bit crunchy and others slightly undercooked. Definitely nothing that ruins an eating experience.
Overall this is a solid 7.5/10 pie.

🥧 Bakery 77 🥧
After spending some time frequenting 'well known' bakeries, I decided to pass through Bakery 77 at Reynella yesterday.
I got a meat pie and chicken and veg pie however, my first comparison is this vanilla slice.
I want to be clear...this was a enjoyable and tasty vanilla slice. Not my favourite but I doubt you'd be disappointed.
Strengths for me were the generous layer of icing, size and price (believe it was $4) and the ooziness of the custard. In saying that, this also made it hard to eat. How do you like your Vanilla's?

🍮 Nettle & Knead 🍮
THIS! Definitely the highlight of my visit to Nettle and Knead - HAZELNUT PRALINE.
There was a nice selection of sweets in store but this one drew me in. It was light, fresh and delicious. If you like nutella, you'll enjoy this.
This was a nice surprise after tasting some of their savoury range. I got the feel this is a cool place to grab a coffee and a pastry. Have you been to Nettle and Knead before? Let me know your thoughts.

🟡 Nettle and Knead 🟡
Been on my list for a while this bakery. A beautifully set up family owned, boutique artisan bakery.
I wasn't sure what to expect from a savoury stand point and I got the most interesting and unique meat pie I've had yet!
Unfortunately, it wasn't my cup of tea. I loved the point of difference in the pie and the effort that has gone in to individually make each of them. The pastry was a nice thickness also.
However, taste wise, just didn't click for me. I'm not sure about the spices in the meat but there was definitely an arrangement in there.
I liked the lamb and harissa sausage roll more, however this had a very tough pastry.
STAY TUNED for the sweets post because they were 🤤🤤 @ Nettle & Knead

🍩 OMG Decadent Donuts Adelaide City 🍩
Not a bakery but I'm getting into my donuts! These donuts reminded of my childhood, heading into the markets with the family and getting a fresh cinnamon donut off the press.
.
These sweet treats were soft, light and straight out of the 180 degree oil and into the dusting sugars of your choice. I went with Cinnamon, Strawberry Patch and Cocoa. My advice, get them and eat them ASAP.
For me, Cocao was my favourite, followed by cinnamon and strawberry patch. I was hoping to get some more today to capture a better photo but unfortunately the weather ruined the pop up donut stall near my house 😩.
Should note these are all accredited by Coeliac Australia and certified by Vegan Australia.
P.s - Great service too which should never go unnoticed!

🍞🥧 Skala Bakery 🍰🍩
Ventured to the Adelaide Central Market to visit the newly opened Skala Bakery Stall (Shop 25). I felt like I spent 15 minutes looking in the store windows deciding what to get but I settled on:
- Cherry Danish
- Bluberry Cheesecake
I'm not a huge sweets fan but I can never go past a cheesecake however, the Cherry Danish was a clear winner for me in this instance. Loved the fresh, in season cherries, and as you can see there was a generous serving. The glaze and icing were spot on. Everyhting about this shouted 'fresh' and 'homemade' 😍
The Cheesecake wasn't bad but coming in with high expectations it fell a bit flat for me. It had a nice soft, smooth texture and the base was well baked and not too hard.
Going to an Artisan Bakery, I couldn't leave without a loaf of Light Rye Bread too. Plenty of goodies in the Markets you can pair this with, head down and have a visit .

Our Story

I remember one of the most poignant sayings I had ever heard was that ‘It’s not work if you love what you do’.

As a young adult, my energy was put toward forging a career that would support myself financially and one that others would be proud of.

As I got older and somewhat wiser (not more mature) I started to focus more on things in my life that made me happy. On a whim I decided that I was going to give this idea that I had a crack...The Great Bakery Off.

I love to eat, I love to create and I love to make people laugh and this is what I can do through The Great Bakery Off.
