If you’re smelling wildfire smoke, chances are that unhealthy microscopic smoke and soot particles are entering your lungs. In those conditions, it's best to wear an N95 mask outside.

Another tip: If the air quality is poor, close your doors and windows, and use weather stripping and even duct tape to help create a good seal. Smoke can travel hundreds of miles from the source, so even if you live far away from a fire and are in no immediate danger, you could still have harmful smoke coming into your home.

4 YEARS AGO TODAY:

In mid-January 2021, Minnesota experienced a significant winter storm that brought heavy snowfall, strong winds, and challenging travel conditions across the state. The storm began on January 14 and continued through January 15, affecting various regions with varying intensities.

Storm Overview:

The storm initiated on January 14, 2021, with precipitation starting as rain in some areas due to unusually warm temperatures for January. As temperatures dropped, the rain transitioned to snow, continuing into January 15.

Southeastern Minnesota, including areas like Ellendale, reported up to 8.3 inches of snow.

The Twin Cities metro area received approximately 2.9 inches.

Other regions recorded between 1 to 4 inches, with localized areas seeing up to 6 inches.

The storm was accompanied by strong winds, particularly in western and southwestern Minnesota, where gusts reached up to 50 mph. These conditions led to blizzard warnings and hazardous travel, with reports of vehicles being tipped over due to high winds.

The snow was notably wet and heavy, with low snow-to-liquid ratios around 7 or 8-to-1, meaning each tenth of an inch of precipitation yielded just 0.7 or 0.8 inches of snow. This resulted in slushy accumulations that compacted quickly and transformed into icy sheets as temperatures fell below freezing in the days following the storm.

The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds created treacherous travel conditions, leading to numerous road closures, especially in western and southwestern Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported hazardous roads, with whiteout conditions in some areas.

The weight of the wet snow, combined with high winds, led to downed tree branches and power lines in certain regions, causing power outages and property damage.

Local authorities and emergency services were actively involved in responding to weather-related incidents, including vehicle accidents and assisting stranded motorists.

This storm was notable not only for its meteorological characteristics but also for its impacts on daily life in Minnesota during that period.
