Broc Recordz: "THEODOR is a psychedelic sweet soul band formed by members with diverse musical backgrounds.

Whilst on a road trip to Italy Rob and Lui were listening to tapes of contemporary soul music. The idea was born to record an album channeling a moody and relaxed soundscape. „Right after our trip we called up our good friends Max and Greg, who were immediately on board. We wrote and recorded deep in the pandemic. Those weekend sessions captured this peaceful solitude“ The outcome was their self-titled debut album which will be released in February 2023 on the french label Broc Recordz. The rich sonic texture and unconventional arrangements of their very first single SHEPARD’S LULLABY gives a hint on what is to be expected on their forthcoming LP. THEODOR created a perfect soundtrack for a hot and humid summer day having a magic dash in your twelve o’clock tea. Playful melodic bass lines and the soulful acoustic drums build the playground for the warm and dreamy keys such as farfisa organs, fender rhodes and 80's synths. The lush instrumentals are spiced by the very different yet complementary voices of Max and Lui."

"The WAITIKI 7’s Debut Release, Adventures in Paradise, Reinvents Classic Exotica for Modern Ears

Release Date: August 18, 2009

(Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Hawai‘i's Statehood)

If, while listening to The WAITIKI 7’s debut album Adventures in Paradise you find yourself daydreaming of sipping a cocktail from a tiki mug while lolling about idyllically on a Hawaiian beach as birds sing merrily in the trees not too far away, then you get it. Adventures in Paradise, to be released August 18th on Pass Out Records, is a contemporary reimagining of the classic exotica sound introduced on the islands exactly 50 years ago—the year of Hawaii's statehood—by Martin Denny, a transplanted mainland pianist who tapped into the tropical zeitgeist, stirred together several disparate elements, and created a whole new sound in the process.

“Exotica,” explains Randy Wong, the 28-year-old bassist, music director and co-founder of The WAITIKI 7, “floats in the zone between soundscapes and an early world music hybrid. Denny took popular WWII-era Hawaiian Island songs (themselves already set to jazz harmonies, and
incorporating folk songs from the Far East) and a Latin feel and then added birdcalls. He took large orchestrations intended for full symphonic orchestra and pared them down to make them feasible in the combo context. But exotica just sort of stopped developing in the ’60s.”

Which is where The WAITIKI 7 comes in. Although they bow at the altar of Martin Denny and other exotica pioneers such as Les Baxter and Juan Garcia Esquivel, The WAITIKI 7—whose name cleverly fuses that of the famous Honolulu beach with the faux-Polynesian gods ubiquitous in island culture—is a band for today. The WAITIKI 7 retains the essence of Denny-era exotica and reconstitutes it for contemporary audiences raised on a multitude of clashing musical genres and pop culture images.

Fleur - "Bouquet Champêtre" (LP)
Label: Soundflat Records
Release date: 2022 nov 11

"Bouquet Champêtre means ‘field bouquet’: a nonchalant bunch with flowers in different colors, shapes and lengths. It’s not tight and monochromatic, but wild, uneven and composed of all kinds of flowers. Each flower is beautiful, but combine them in the right way and you get an overwhelming whole.

The same goes for this album. You can enjoy each song for its own sound and feel, but listen to the album as a whole and you will find yourself floating on top of Fleur’s warm breathy voice in a musical Bouquet Champêtre filled with rich colors, sounds and smells inspired by such albums as The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds, The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle, France Gall’s 1968 and the soul of Motown. Great stuff from a great decade, but Fleur is NOW and she is in full bloom!

Label: ERR REC
Release date: 2022 april 23

The cheeky Philippe Brown—member of the duo La Punta Bianca (released on the Berlin label Detriti), who also operates as a crooner under the pseudonym of ‘René Couteau,’ and a dance-music producer under ‘Raymond D. Barre’—unlocks this once lost attaché case, music that is irresistible! From the top of his North-east Parisian control tower, he ironically fantasized about a life in business class (disastrous carbon footprint to boot), going from one retro-futuristic air terminal to the next. He soothes his jet-lag with his faithful Juno 106, and his Vermona drum machine. He breaks out the base for the most epic moments of this espionage-laced thriller: Think subtle glances on long-distance flights, check-ins and check-outs last name first, airline seats covered in moleskin, microfilm concealed in hidden compartments, one-night stands through veils of cigarette smoke.

Fred Pallem & le Sacre du Tympan - "X" (LP)
Label: Train Fantôme
Release date: 2022 nov 18

Fred Pallem & Le Sacre du Tympan: "« Why compose a new album? Because I couldn’t do anything else, explains Fred Pallem. If I could release six per year, I would”. This passion for music made by musicians finds its place on “X” (the tenth), designed with a stubborn resistance to the desire to do less, with fewer people. While the career of Le Sacre du Tympan began more than two decades ago, this album brandishes its difference in a perilous exercise: writing each title like a potential hit, where each instrument has its theme, has its gimmick.
Fred Pallem realizes here his tenth work with Le Sacre du Tympan.
On the disc, no less than 25 musicians play brass, strings and other harpsichords. Among them, fellow travelers present since the very first recording of the big band: Vincent Taeger on drums, Rémi Sciuto on saxophone and Daniel Zimmermann on trombone. And then new arrivals as the adventure progresses. And all of them matter today in the history and sound of the orchestra.
Recorded in several stages, in the Paris region, with a string section finalized at the legendary Ferber studio, this tenth opus is, according to its creator, "a little more than a new album". This is the second part of a cycle that began with “L’Odyssée” (2018), where the compositions are inspired by very personal facts:
Goodbye Lougarock - where Guillaume Magne's stratocaster sparkles - is dedicated to Fred Pallem's father, who left in January 2020; Bi***es en Marbella evokes the release of successive confinements; in “L’Amour du Disque”, the composer tells the joy he found in writing this tenth album for Le Sacre. Far from being outdated, "X" above all recalls the very current mission of Le Sacre du Tympan: to put orchestral music back on the map, like a strange impossible place where Wagnerian flights would intersect with the groove of David Axelrod's basses and the madness of Jean-Claude Vannier.
Not to mention passing the baton, "X" is perhaps the sign that Fred Pallem and his sidekicks have been writing for more than two decades the scores of a mine of samples where artists like Madlib or Danger Mouse could come and pick up bits of groove and rhythmic joys baked in the sun. This is precisely what makes this tenth album "X" a more playful long-format than the previous one, and to be listened to like a tanning cream for the ears, far from concepts.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Glenn Fallows & Mark Treffel - "The Globeflower Masters Vol.2" (LP)
Label: Mr Bongo
Release date: 2022 oct 21

Mr Bongo: "Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel released their first album, ‘The Globeflower Master Vol. 1’, on Mr Bongo in September 2021. With its lush, warm and timeless productions paying homage to classic 60s and 70s soundtrack composers, it was very well received and struck a chord with the scene’s connoisseurs. Louder Than War emphatically stated, "It’s impossible not to like The Globeflower Masters Vol. 1.”, with Gigwise echoing that praise “slickly compelling retro vibes”.

The Globeflower Master Vol. 2 is the slightly edgier and more grown-up sequel to Mark and Glenn's 2021 debut album. For this excursion, the Brighton-based duo wanted to lean a little further into their European film soundtrack influences, with particular inspiration mined from the works of Stefano Torossi, David Shire, and Roger Webb. This expansion of their sound builds upon the rich tapestry of cinematic funk à la David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg and Morricone that fashioned Vol. 1. Here the arrangements, melodies, and harmonies have been refined; only what is needed is left.

The recordings are drenched in visual imagery; they stimulate the senses and invite the imagination to roam. Ethereal, hazy memories of lost summers are triggered; the beauty of listening to music when driving along a deserted road in the Italian countryside lined with cypress trees heading towards the sun, and beyond. As the musical journey progresses, we even take a voyage to another planet. Whether these memories are real or constructed recollections of scenes from film and television, the tracks evoke a feeling of nostalgia and comfort. Like all the best music, 'The Globeflower Masters Vol. 2' takes us out of ourselves even if it's only temporarily.

To consolidate the shape of the sound, drummers Timmy Rickard and Ollie Boorman (who also featured on Vol. 1) and John Maiden (Tricky collaborator) sprinkled their magic and forged their stamps onto the recordings. Collaborating with other talented musicians contributed to the picture Mark and Glenn wanted to paint. The ‘Globeflower Master Vol. 2’ is a fitting tribute to the music they love and care deeply about and a glorious addition to their musical world."
