COURT TO DELIVER RULING ON IGP ADAMU’S TENURE EXTENSION APRIL 16

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed April 16 to decide whether Mohammed Adamu can continue to operate in office as the Inspector-General of Police after his retirement from the force in February.

A legal practitioner, Maxwell Okpara, had dragged the federal government to court over the elongation of Adamu’s tenure in office despite attaining the compulsory retirement age on February 1, 2021.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Adamu, Attorney-General of the Federation, and Nigeria Police Council named first to fourth respondents respectively in the suit.

Adamu, appointed IGP in 2019, was expected to leave office on February 1, this year having clocked the mandatory 35 years in service.

But President Buhari on February 4, announced an extension of Adamu’s stay in office by three months pending the appointment of a substantive IGP.
