...Of drum recording, room, mic placement and black magick.
We were forced out of our previous rehearsal place where I´ve recorded drums for 3 albums: Desolate Shrines latest, Ordinance´s "In purge..." and Pestilent Hexs soon to be released debut. The place had its challenges but that´s how it usually is. You work what you´ve got. Now that I have found a new lair, I did quick test recordings with quick and dirty micing.
Everything sound absolutely amazing and I don´t know why. The drums heads are ancient and poorly tuned but still Toms kill!
Previously I´ve struggled a bit with overheads not picking ride as well as I would like to. I´ve tried different placements for overheads but as I use big cymbals (19"-20" crashes and chinas), they tend to block the straight line from ride to mic. It has created some annoying problems with the phase and stereo image. Now this seems to be fixed by trying to move china cymbal away from the audio signal path. It made a HUGE difference.
A new problem has occured though - Hihat vanishes from the mix and it´s a bit bizarre. Yes, there might be a cymbal blocking the way a bit here too, but in Overheads - soloed - the hihat is quite loud. But in the mix it just vanishes. I don´t know what is causing this but I will mic it when the s**t gets real anyway.
I swapped some crashes around and see what works the best. Some cymbals sounds great when playing and annoying/bad when recording. I can once again confirm this to be true. It´s great to try out different combinations before recording the final performance.
The big mysteries that remain:
- bass drums (solo mic, not the full mix) sounds great. Better than ever. I haven´t changed anything. Room should not affect this much.
- Snare is as boinky as ever soloed. I´ve never gotten that sound good. But in full mix, great.
- OH stereo defenition is really great. Pure luck or the room just works.
TL;DR: Quick and dirty micing in a new rehearsal place. Drums with ancient and dead drum heads. Evrything sounds better than ever but Hihat sounds lame and I can´t figure out why.
Maybe I will write some random thoughts here when and if I experiment some more and fix the mysterious ghost-hat.
